Patent number: 8737964Abstract: A computer, such as a Windows-based PC 23, has associated with it a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) 15, such as of the type used in a GSM or UMTS cellular or mobile telecommunications network. The SIM 15 can be authenticated with the network 3 in the same way as for authenticating SIMs of mobile telephone handsets used in the network, and can in this way authenticate the user of the PC 23 or the PC 23 itself. Such authentication can, for example, permit use of the PC 23 in relation to a particular application running on the PC 23. Challenge and response messages are transmitted between the network 3 and the SIM 15 via an authenticator module 30 implemented on the PC 23. These authentication messages have the predetermined format of an Over The Air (OTA) message, which is also used in GSM or UMTS telecommunications networks to transmit non-authentication messages—for example, SMS messages. The authentication data is encapsulated within OTA messages.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2006Date of Patent: May 27, 2014Assignee: Vodafone Group PLCInventor: Najib Koraichi

Patent number: 8688097Abstract: A method and apparatus for reconfiguring an operational frequency and associated bandwidth used by a femto-cell base station are disclosed. The femto-cell is configured to provide coverage to a User Equipment by connecting to a core telecommunications network via a gateway device. The method includes checking a list of frequencies and associated bandwidths available to a wireless network interface of the femto-cell base station and determining if any of the frequencies in the list matches the operational frequency supported by the User Equipment to which the femto-cell base station is providing coverage. If at least one frequency matches the one supported by the User Equipment, a second frequency is selected from the list of frequencies, said second frequency being established as the operational frequency of the femto-cell base station.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2011Date of Patent: April 1, 2014Assignee: Vodafone Group PLCInventors: Luis Gabriel Zas Couce, Jose Angel Perez De La Rosa, Francisco Javier Dominguez Romero

Patent number: 8682292Abstract: A GSM or UMTS mobile telecommunications network is disclosed. In addition to the conventional radio access network comprising the base stations, one or more additional access points are provided. An access point is connected to the network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point is configured to appear to the mobile terminal as a conventional base station—that is, it communicates with the mobile terminal using GSM or UMTS transport protocols and does not require any modification to a standard GSM or UMTS mobile terminal. Access Points are typically not under the direct control of the network provider. Arrangements are disclosed which allow the network provider to verify that the access point a mobile terminal is about to commence communicating through is at a particular location. Differential charging may be performed in dependence upon a subscriber's location.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2008Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignee: Vodafone Group PLCInventors: Jonathon Batkin, Jose Luis Carrizo Martinez

Patent number: 8677467Abstract: A computer, such as a WINDOWS® operating system-based PC, has associated with it a Subscriber Identity Module (or SIM), such as of the type used in a GSM cellular telephone system. The SIM can be authenticated by the telephone network, in the same way as for authenticating SIMs of telephone handset users in the network, and can in this way authenticate the user of the PC or the PC itself. Such authentication can, for example, permit use of the PC in relation to a particular application which is released to the PC after the authentication is satisfactorily completed. The application may be released to the PC by a third party after and in response to the satisfactory completion of the authentication process. A charge for the session can be debited to the user by the telecommunications network and then passed on to the third party.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2010Date of Patent: March 18, 2014Assignee: Vodafone Group PLCInventors: Adrian David Lincoln, Charles William Debney, Ian Ronald Maxwell, Jonathan Lawrence Viney

Patent number: 8634845Abstract: The mobile telecommunications network (n) has at least one mobile terminal (1) registered therewith. The network (n) has an active communication state with the mobile terminal (1) and an inactive communication state with the mobile terminal (1). Means Q; V for calculating an indication of the movement of the mobile terminal (1) within the network (n) in each of the states is provided. One embodiment is characterized in that, when the communication changes from a first of the states to a second of the states, the mobility indication calculated in the first of the states is used in the second of the states.
