  • Patent number: 4313353
Abstract: A control system for an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle having a mechanical planetary gear train with hydraulically actuatable gear shift elements, and a manual control valve for delivering a first pressurized fluid to a selected gear shift element when said lever is in one of said forward drive positions comprises a main control valve, responsive to the position of the accelerator pedal and the speed of said vehicle, for controlling the supply of the first pressurized fluid from the manual control valve to the selected element. The main control valve comprises a piston having a first piston surface, which is displaceable between a first position for connecting the supply of first pressurized fluid and a second position for interrupting the supply of first pressurized fluid thereby to disconnect the clutch. • Patent number: 4312222
Abstract: This invention is an apparatus for testing the volume of a fluid medium flowing through a variable cross-section throttling point, such as the air throttle duct of a carburetor for an internal combustion engine. The fluid medium to be tested enters a primary duct of the present invention which has an input pressure regulator followed by two constant cross-section nozzles through which the fluid medium must pass. A flow branch duct which includes a second pressure regulator and the flow device intersects the primary duct for fluid transmission at a point between the two nozzles. The second pressure regulator is at the input to the test device. A pressure gauge is provided at the intersection of the main duct and branch duct. The indicated pressure is inversely proportional to the fluid flow volume through the test device.

  • Patent number: 4298109
Abstract: An automatic transmission for a motor vehicle of the type having a mechanical planetary gear train with hydraulically actuatable gear shift elements has a gear select lever having a plurality of selectable forward drive positions, including automatic forward drive (D). A manual control valve, responsive to the position of the select lever, supplies a first pressurized hydraulic fluid to a selected gear shift element, e.g. a forward gear clutch, when the lever is in one of said forward drive positions. A control system which selectively interrupts the supply of fluid to the selected element comprises a main control valve, and a second fluid pressure acting on the main control valve to connect the supply of the first fluid to the gear shift element for engaging the element.

  • Patent number: 4296716
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has an oil pan divided into two chambers that communicate with each other. The first chamber is at a distance above the bottom of the oil pan, which is also the bottom of the second chamber. Because the bottom of the oil pan is cooled by the slip stream the oil in the two chambers are at different temperatures. Suction lines lead from each chamber to a thermostat valve that connects them to a discharge line. The thermostat valve operates such that when the engine is cold the oil supplied to the discharge line is relatively hot oil from the first chamber and when the engine is hot the relatively cool oil from the second chamber is supplied via the valve.

  • Patent number: 4295551
Abstract: An automatic clutch system is provided for use in a motor vehicle and has a control mechanism which responds to the position of the accelerator pedal and which also responds to first and second rotation speed sensing means connected to the engine shaft and the transmission shaft. In a preferred embodiment, the automatic clutch system is provided with a control mechanism which operates in a first mode when the vehicle is starting from a standing position to engage the clutch in a manner which keeps the engine in a specified speed range, which depends on accelerator lever position. The control mechanism operates in a second mode when the vehicle is shifted between gears in order to engage the clutch in a manner which provides a constant time gradient for the shaft speed difference selected in accordance with accelerator pedal position.
