  • Patent number: 6564327
Abstract: A method of and system for controlling access to the Internet by members of an organization that includes at least one supervisor and at least one non-supervisor for which limited Internet access is desired. The system maintains for each member of the organization a session identifier. When the system establishes an Internet session between a member of the organization and the Internet, the system initially sets a user session identifier for said Internet session to a default session identifier, which is the session identifier for the lowest access level member of the organization. When the member requests a resource, the system determines if an access level rating for requested resource is greater than the value of the access level field of the user session identifier. If so, the system blocks the resource and presents member with choices of logging on to the system as a specific member of the organization with a higher access level, or appealing the blocking to a supervisor.

  • Patent number: 6564181
Abstract: A system that provides measurements of speech distortion that correspond closely to user perceptions of speech distortion is disclosed. The system calculates and analyzes first and second discrete derivatives to detect and determine the incidence of change in the voice waveform that would not have been made by human articulation because natural voice signals change at a limited rate. Statistical analysis is performed of both the first and second discrete derivatives to detect speech distortion by looking at the distribution of the signals. For example. the kurtosis of the signals is analyzed as well as the number of times these values exceed a predetermined threshold, Additionally. the number of times the first derivative data is less than a predetermined low value is analyzed to provide a level of speech distortion and clipping of the signal due to lost data packets.

  • Patent number: 6558190
Abstract: An electrical box including a hollow container defining an interior space, as well as neutral and hot exterior connectors mounted on an exterior surface of the container, and ground, neutral, hot, and alternate hot interior conductive members mounted on an interior surface of the container which define a single circuit of the electrical box. The exterior connectors receive electrical power from a multi-conductor electrical cable and transfer the power to an electrical unit connected to the internal conductive members without the multi-conductor electrical cable entering the interior space of the electrical box. The exterior connectors are preferably insulation displacement connectors (IDCs) and are mounted to exterior bus bars that contain high current screw holes that, for alternative use, also accept high current wire connectors used where the electrical power is higher than the current capacity of the IDCs.

  • Patent number: 6556669
Abstract: A method and device for preventing fraud in special service calls from an international origin point to a domestic terminating point through a long-distance telecommunications system is described. In the system and method, a Screening for International Calls database is added to the Integrated Services Network (ISN) platform. The records in the Screening for International Calls database are keyed by the country code and contain a field for blocked terminating regions. When an international call is made, the record corresponding to the international origin point is retrieved from the Screening for International Calls database. This record is checked to determine if there are terminating regions indicated in the blocked exchange field. If there are no terminating regions indicated in the blocked exchange field, call processing continues.

  • Patent number: 6553061
Abstract: A device for detecting a predetermined waveform in a received signal and synchronizing the detected waveform to the predetermined waveform is disclosed. The device includes a memory element for storing a reference set of encoded values. The reference set representing an encoded version of the predetermined waveform. An encoder is used to PCM encode the signal to obtain sets of encoded values representing the received signal. A processor calculates the statistical correlation coefficient of the reference set and the signal sets. The processor then determines the maximum statistical correlation coefficient. The predetermined waveform is detected in the signal if the maximum statistical correlation coefficient is greater than or equal to a predetermined threshold value. The device provides a compact, inexpensive, and fast method for detecting a known reference waveform in a received signal.

  • Patent number: 6542582
Abstract: A method for providing telephone services for the hearing-impaired includes establishing a conference call between a hearing-impaired party, a hearing party and a communication assistant. The hearing party sends a voice message to the communication assistant. The communication assistant converts the voice message into a corresponding text message and transmits the text message to the hearing-impaired party. The text message is displayed to the hearing-impaired party using a device that includes a modem. The modem outputs a synchronization tone in response to receiving the text message. The synchronization tone and other tones may then be filtered to ensure that they do not reach the communication assistant and the hearing party.

  • Publication number: 20030048781
Abstract: A system and method for moving voice telephone calls through a data network. More particularly, the system and method are directed to the efficient operation of using identification numbers to route data packets through a communications node without reformatting individual data packets to the native protocol of that communications node. The exception is when the data packet will be more efficiently handled within the overall communications network by routing different pieces of that data packet to different outgoing port cards in a particular communications node, then the data packet will be reformatted, if necessary, to the native protocol of that communications node. The system and method allow the outgoing port card to convert the data packet into the correct format for transmission to either the destination (customer) or the next communications node. Together port cards and data switches form nodes. The port card receives and transmits out signals through respective ports connected to links between nodes.

  • Patent number: 6523065
Abstract: A method and system for allocating distributed resources connected to a computer network to application programs running on computers attached to the communications network. The distributed resource allocator system comprises a number of identical processes running on one or more computers attached to the communications network. Application programs request allocation of resources from a local distributed resource allocator system process running using a resource allocator applications programming interface. Application programs request allocation of resource from a remote distributed resource allocator system process via a resource allocator access protocol. The distributed resource allocator system provides a means for the entry of new resources and new resource class and characteristics information in a shared directory. The resource allocator system also manages information about the capacities and capabilities of resources connected to the communications network.
