  • Patent number: 4836093
Abstract: A piston assembly is disclosed which reduces the consumption of a lubricating agent circulated to provide lubrication between the outer sidewall of the piston assembly and the interior sidewall of a bore. This is accomplished by providing at least one aperture in at least one compression ring groove. The aperture is disposed in fluid communication with the interior of a hollow skirt portion of the piston for communicating such lubricating agent gathered in the compression ring groove into the interior of the hollow skirt portion of the piston so that the lubricating agent can return to the crankcase of an operating mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4819433
Abstract: The hydraulic brake system having at least one wheel brake is adapted to be pressurized by a master brake cylinder actuated by a hydraulic power booster. An auxiliary pressure is adjustable in a pressure chamber of the hydraulic power booster by means of a brake valve. Interposed between an auxiliary pressure source and the brake valve is a pressure-reducing valve that is controllable by the auxiliary pressure and contains a valve controlling a passageway, the valve being acted upon by the auxiliary pressure to open the passageway. To simplify the construction of the pressure-reducing valve, the closure member of the valve is exposed to the reduced pressure in the pressure-reducing valve such that a force related to the valve seat surface will be exerted on the closure member in the closing direction of the passageway of the pressure-reducing valve.

  • Patent number: 4791854
Abstract: A hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement retains the outer surface of a sleeve forming the piston in dry condition. The cylinder provides an outer wall and an inner stem with the sleeve sliding inwardly of the outer wall and outwardly of the stem. A head on the end of the stem cooperates with the inner surface of the sleeve. A bearing member on the end of the sleeve remote from the head cooperates with the outer surface of the stem. A first chamber is thus defined between the head and a closure cap on the sleeve to provide an expansion chamber. An annular chamber between the outer surface of the stem and the inner surface of the sleeve and closed by the bearing member provides a return chamber. Two fluid channels coaxially arranged within the stem provide the communication of fluid to the chambers.

  • Patent number: 4787205
Abstract: A vehicle brake system, with the usual arrangement of a power booster axially aligned with the brake master cylinder piston and engaged between it and the brake pedal, has a fluid pressure differential-operated actuator offset from the conjoint axis of the power booster and the master cylinder piston. The actuator is coupled to the master cylinder piston through a mechanical linkage which provides a substantial mechanical advantage. The actuator causes the brakes to be applied independent of the brake pedal in response to any of several sensed conditions which dictate that the vehicle should not be moving.

  • Patent number: 4786234
Abstract: A turbine airfoil, such as a turbine blade or nozzle vane, is disclosed for use in a high temperature environment. The airfoil comprises a center post and at least one side piece. The side piece is attached to the center post so that, at room temperature, a clearance between the center post and the side piece permits limited relative movement between the post and side piece. This clearance space, however, is dimensioned so that at the operating temperature of the turbine, thermal expansion of the center post and/or side piece substantially eliminates the clearance as well as the limited movement between the center post and side piece.

  • Patent number: 4784040
Abstract: A control system for a pneumatic actuator uses pressurized gases, such as air, as the actuating medium. Such gases and particularly air commonly contain moisture which condenses to form a liquid, such as water, which collects in a closed chamber of an expandable chamber assembly in the pneumatic actuator. In cold climates, the water freezes, preventing proper control of the pneumatic actuator. By providing a control system having a valve positioned elevationally higher or in close proximity to a pneumatic actuator and a tube which extends into the closed chamber of the expandable chamber assembly, water which is contained in the closed chamber is expelled from the elevationally lowest portion of the assembly when the valve is shifted to exhaust the air from the control system.

  • Patent number: 4784037
Abstract: A locking apparatus for fluid operated valves having a piston connected to the valve actuator which moves in response to applied pressure within a cylinder housing having a cylinder head, a catch block is secured to the piston, and the cylinder head incorporates a catch pin. Pressure applied to the cylinder to open the valve moves the piston adjacent to the cylinder head where the catch pin automatically engages the catch block preventing futher movement of the piston or premature closure of the valve. Application of pressure to the cylinder to close the valve, retracts the catch pin, allowing the valve to close. Included are one or more selector valves, for selecting pressure application to other apparatus depending on the gate valve position, open or closed, protecting such apparatus from damage due to premature closing caused by pressure loss or operational error.
