  • Patent number: 6071049
Abstract: A crankshaft (6) is rotated about its axis (7), and all of its crankpins (28, 29, 30), which each respectively have an eccentricity (e) relative to the axis (7), are simultaneously rotary milled by respective allocated rotary milling cutters (34, 35, 36) of a milling cutter set (12). The individual milling cutters (34, 35, 36) each respectively have an eccentricity (e) corresponding to the eccentricity of the respective crankpin that is allocated to be machined by the respective milling cutter. Furthermore, the milling cutter set (12) is rotated at the same rotational speed, i.e. with a rotational speed ratio of 1:1, relative to the rotating crankshaft, while simultaneously the milling cutter set is moved in the X-direction toward the crank-shaft axis to achieve a feed advance.

  • Patent number: 6068431
Abstract: The invention relates to a machine tool having a gantry that is movable along an X axis and having a vertical spindle supported by the cross-member of the gantry. The cross-member comprises two beams that are spaced apart in the X axis direction and that have facing inside faces. Two carriages are mounted to slide on said facing faces, on opposite sides of a vertically movable cursor-carrier. The tool-carrier spindle is carried by a cursor mounted to slide on the bottom face of the cursor-carrier and movable along the X axis. Movements of the carriages, of the cursor-carrier and of cursor are under numerical control. The tool-carrier spindle can move in the X axis direction without it being necessary to move the gantry.

  • Patent number: 6013016
Abstract: An engine block is located and clamped on a pallet and then brought into a boring station where the pallet is located and clamped on a shuttle. The shuttle moves solely along a straight horizontal path to move the engine block into the work station, locate the engine block during a machining operation, and then transfer the block out of the work station. First and second three-axis boring machines at respective opposite sides of the block locate crankshaft and camshaft boring bars for different engine blocks and then simultaneously back bore both the crankshaft and camshaft bores. A computer numerical control (CNC) positions the boring bars and the block and controls other machining parameters for different engine blocks. The CNC causes the shuttle to move to a location horizontally offset from a final machining location so that the boring bar axes are offset horizontally from the bearing bore axes and the boring bars are then inserted into the block.

  • Patent number: 6012883
Abstract: A hybrid tool serves as a form on which constituent materials are applied for bonding or curing into a part in a desired configuration. It also serves as a holder for the bonded or cured materials in the originally applied position during subsequent machining. The hybrid tool is made by fabricating a face sheet of composite material having a facing surface configured to the reverse of a desired shape of one surface of a part to be made on the tool. The actual part will be laid up on the facing surface, cured while on the tool, and even trimmed before release. Base structure of the tool holds the facing surface of the face sheet in the desired shape, and includes ground-engaging pads that define an "A" datum plane. The tool aligns a reference plane of the face sheet parallel to the datum plane. A substantially continuous groove in the face sheet, used for trimming the part, opens in the facing surface.

  • Patent number: 6000889
Abstract: In a machine tool having a main shaft, a thermal change amount between two sampling times is computed on the basis of the movement distance of the main shaft during a period from time 0 to time 1a. After thermal change amounts are computed, a total thermal change amount which results from adding these thermal change amounts is computed. Since the thermal change amount is based on the movement distances (driving states) that are detected at the respective time points and the influence of the thermal change amounts that has been computed previously are added to the computed thermal change amount, it is possible to compute the total thermal change amount corresponding to the driving states at the respective time points.

  • Patent number: 5997224
Abstract: A key cutting machine for cutting keys by code has a vise jaw for securely holding a key with a groove of the key aligned with respect to the vise jaw and with at least one of a tip of the key and a shoulder of the key positioned at a predetermined position with respect to the vise jaw, a key cutter, a position detector for detecting a blank edge of the key held by the vise jaw, a movement system for moving the key cutter and the vise jaw relative to one another to cut the key; and a controller for controlling the movement system to carry out a predetermined sequence of movements according to code information. The code information is referenced with respect to a blank edge of a side of the key to be cut, and the predetermined sequence of movements being referenced to the detected blank edge position. A key is cut with the key held in the vise jaw with a groove of the key aligned with respect to the vise jaw without needing to align the key with respect to a keyrest.

  • Patent number: 5997223
Abstract: A spindle capable of operation at 200,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) with a reciprocating shaft design to minimize the moving mass. The spindle has a ceramic spindle shaft to decrease the moving mass and increase the shaft stiffness for better dynamic stability. The spindle employs a built-in linear motor to provide direct drilling motion to move the shaft along the axis, and a permanent magnet DC brushless motor to rotate the spindle shaft. The linear motor is coupled to the shaft by a combination of an air bearing and a magnetic thrust bearing to reduce the size of the thrust area for better dynamic stability and reduction in stresses of material. A double gripping centrifugal chuck is mounted in the hollow ceramic shaft, and reduces drill bit runout.

  • Patent number: 5980170
Abstract: A new and improved tool driver having a shaft with a longitudinal axis and opposite ends. A boss is secured at one of said shaft ends by which the tool driver is connected to a rotary tool. A tool collate is secured at the other of the shaft ends by which the tool driver may be driven by a surgical hand piece having a chuck in which the collate may be positioned. The boss has a distal end surface with a groove therein. Both the groove and the distal end surface extend transversely of the axis. A pin is positioned in the groove on the axis. A latch mechanism is provided to hold a mounting bar of a rotary tool in the groove on the pin, whereby the rotary tool is held exactly coaxially of the driver during use. The rotary tool which is used with the driver has a bar which has the same dimensions as the groove in the boss of the tool driver of the invention. The bar thus fills the slot and is complementary to the slot. The bar has a hole therein which is complementary to the pin.

  • Patent number: 5971680
Abstract: Disclosed is an automatic printed circuit board two-bevel forming machine which includes a conveyer, a first cutter assembly which is disposed above the conveyer, and a second cutter assembly which is disposed below the conveyer. The first cutter assembly includes a first rough and a first fine bevel cutter. The second cutter assembly includes a second rough and second fine bevel cutter. The rough and fine bevel cutters of the first and second cutter assemblies incline at a suitable angle toward the upper and lower edges of the PCBs being conveyed. The rough and fine cutters stretch or shrink to a suitable position controlled by a pneumatic driving device. When the PCBs pass through the first and second cutter assemblies sequentially by means of the conveyer, the rough and fine bevel cutters of the first cutter assembly cut and grind the upper edge to form an upper fine bevel, and the rough and fine bevel cutters of the second cutter assembly cut and grind the lower edge to form a lower fine bevel.
