  • Patent number: 5921223
Abstract: A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas recirculation system is disclosed. The control apparatus grasps an optimum relational expression between an excess air ratio and an EGR rate in a transient engine operating condition changing to a certain engine operating condition. Each combination of the excess air ratio and the EGR rate on the relational expression optimizes an amount of generated paticulates and an amount of generated NO.sub.x. The relational expression contains a combination of an optimum excess air ratio and an optimum EGR rate in the certain engine operating condition. The apparatus determines one of a current excess air ratio and a current EGR rate and controls the exhaust gas recirculation system so as to realize the other of an excess air ratio and an EGR rate satisfying the relational expression with respect to one of the current excess air ratio and the current EGR rate.

  • Patent number: 5924027
Abstract: An improved cellular communications system and method is disclosed which routes incoming calls to those subscribers who do not answer their page. The incoming call is routed to one of a list of alternate numbers, such as a home or work number in a public telephone system. Based upon the last known location of the subscriber within the cellular system, a particular list of such alternate numbers are tried in an effort to contact the subscriber outside the cellular network. Different lists are utilized depending upon the subscriber's last known location. In a first embodiment of the present invention, the various lists are stored in a home location register for the cellular system which forwards a particular list to the mobile switching center servicing the subscriber. In a second embodiment of the present invention, the particular list is stored within and forwarded by a service control point within an intelligent network.

  • Patent number: 5911122
Abstract: In connection with instances of inter-exchange hand-off, certain hand-off related parameters assigned to border cells within a first system area are evaluated and considered by the second system area in making the inter-exchange hand-off. To communicate these hand-off related parameters from the first system area to the second system area, a request for the parameters is transmitted from a mobile switching center serving the second system area to a mobile switching center serving the first system area. Responsive thereto, the mobile switching center for the first system area retrieves and delivers the requested parameters for subsequent second system area mobile switching center processing in connection with making the inter-exchange hand-off determination.

  • Patent number: 5901940
Abstract: A valve including a body having a first port, a second port, and a through-bore. A valve member disposed within the through-bore. The valve member having a head and stem configuration exposed to the first port so that the pressure of an operative medium in the first port acts in one direction on the stem and in an opposite direction on the head when the head blocks operative communication between the first and the second ports, the valve stem having a free distal end. A spring that biases the valve member so that the head blocks operative communication between the first and the second ports. An electromagnetic actuator having an armature that moves the valve member to allow operative communication between the first and second ports. A locator that is proximate the free distal end of the stem and that bears against the armature at a single load operative connection.

  • Patent number: 5899176
Abstract: An apparatus has first and second driven pulleys for powering an engine auxiliary function, e.g., a water pump, and for driving an engine fan, respectively. The apparatus includes a hollow tube-like arbor fixed with respect to the first pulley and having a first arbor surface, e.g., an exterior cylindrical surface. A bearing has a first load-supporting surface, e.g., the interior surface of the bearing, which is mounted to the first arbor surface. A fan drive member is mounted to the second load-supporting surface of the bearing, e.g., the exterior bearing surface, and both the fan and the second pulley are coupled to the fan drive member. The two pulleys are driven by respective belts powered by the engine crankshaft and the pulleys rotate in opposite directions when driven. A new engine incorporating the apparatus is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5896840
Abstract: An engine operates in a stratified charge combustion mode and a homogeneous charge combustion mode. A sensor detects driving state of the engine. An ECU (electronic control unit) computes a basic amount of the fuel to be injected from a nozzle based on the detected driving state of the engine. The ECU switches the combustion mode based on the computed basic amount. The ECU computes a corrected amount of the injection fuel based on the basic amount of the injection fuel. The corrected amount of the injection fuel suppresses a fluctuation of engine torque caused by switching of the combustion mode. The ECU controls the injection valve based on the computed corrected amount.

  • Patent number: 5887251
Abstract: The present invention allows a mobile station to receive a command entered by a user for selecting among a plurality of possible values for an authentication key (A-key) stored in its memory, including a default value, a random value and a custom (user-defined) value for the A-key. In response to the command, the mobile station can set the A-key in its memory to the default value or to an internally generated or previously stored random value, or to the custom value entered by the user. The command, whether for selecting the default, random or custom A-key value, may be entered during number assignment module (NAM) programming of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 5870683
Abstract: A wireless mobile station (10), such as a cellular telephone, executes a method to selectively display one of a plurality of graphical information sequences on a display (20) of the mobile station. The graphical information sequence is displayed during an Idle state of the mobile station, that is, when the mobile station is not involved in receiving a call or during a call. By example, the graphical information sequence can be displayed when the mobile station is in a Keyguard state, and/or in a Charging state, or when the mobile station is first powered on. In a further aspect of this invention the user interface (20, 22) of the mobile station is adapted to enable the user to selectively: enable or disable the display of a graphical information sequence; and/or select a graphical information sequence to be displayed from a plurality of pre-stored graphical information sequences; and/or input a definition of a graphical information sequence from an external source for storage in the mobile station.
