  • Patent number: 6967955
Abstract: A computer network includes frame- or packet-based subnetworks connected by switches, the switches being interconnected by high-capacity trunks using a connection-based data transfer protocol similar to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Some of the trunks include a Permanent Virtual Path (PVP) trunk crossing an ATM core network, the PVP trunk including one or more bidirectional PVPs. A multipoint-to-point (MPT) protocol is used among the switches to transfer packets as groups of cells directly from “leaf”, or source, switches to “root”, or destination, switches without requiring significant routing-related processing during cell transmission.

  • Patent number: 6965607
Abstract: In a point-to-multipoint link traffic is transmitted in packets across the shared medium. Access to the medium is controlled by permits sent by a central node to multipoint nodes in response to a queue record of the number of packets awaiting transmission at the multipoint nodes. When circuit emulated traffic, or traffic with tight delay and delay variation requirements, is to be sent across the link, permits are sent by the central node unsolicited at regular intervals in accordance with information stored in a scheduler. The scheduler may be a single or several circular memories comprising cells representing time slots on the link. The cells contain scheduling information corresponding to one or more multipoint nodes. The central node consults the scheduler to determine if a permit is scheduled. If no permit is scheduled the time slot may be allocated to an unscheduled service on the basis of a queue record.

  • Patent number: 6965612
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for the hardware implementation of virtual concatenation and link capacity adjustment over SONET/SDH frames include providing a state machine on chip with a SONET/SDH mapper and providing means whereby a plurality of members of a VCG can share the same state machine. The apparatus of the invention preferably includes a time wheel for granting access to the single state machine and memory for storing state information for each of the VCG members. According to the presently preferred embodiment, the invention is implemented on chip with an OC-3 Ethernet mapper. • Patent number: 6959012
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for compensating for the difference between the phase relation among signals at the point of generation and the phase relation among the signals after time division multiplexing when the signals are processed according to the time division multiplexing. In a system which transmits a plurality of signals according to the time division multiplexing, the apparatus includes a phase transition filter group having as many phase transition filters as the plurality of signals. Each of the phase transition filters performs filtering to generate a signal having a phase transited with respect to an input signal based on phase information. The apparatus also includes a multiplexing unit for providing phase information, which are assigned to each of the plurality of signals according to the time division multiplexing, to the phase transition filter group and time division multiplexing a plurality of signals transmitted from the phase transition filter group.

  • Patent number: 6954423
Abstract: Analog phase-shift elements connect each of a plurality of input nodes to each of a plurality of output nodes, wherein each component is adapted to produce a phase shift in a periodic signal processed therethrough. A linear transformation of a data set of discrete values of a given function provided as a set of analog signals to the input nodes is achieved by judiciously adjusting the signal amplitude produced at the output of the phase-shift components and summing the resulting output signals as required to simulate the transformation of interest.

  • Patent number: 6947389
Abstract: A dual mode configurator operates in an off-line mode to configure Fieldbus devices and/or segments in a typical manner and operates in an on-line mode to reconfigure or set certain parameters of a device when the device is connected to a segment controlled by a different host, without interfering with the on-line operation of the segment. The dual mode configurator can be used to configure an entire segment by configuring both network settings and device settings and, alternatively, can be used to configure device settings without effecting or interfering with the on-line system configuration information such as the network settings of a segment when, for example, a different host device or configuration device is connected to the segment to implement process control activities or to make segment changes.

  • Patent number: 6947388
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for providing a bandwidth allocation scheduler for media delivery. The present invention includes determining an available bandwidth for file transmission for a time interval, and allocating at least a portion of the available bandwidth to at least one file transmission task, wherein a different amount of the available bandwidth may be allocated to each of the at least one file transmission tasks. The bandwidth allocation scheduler in accordance with the present invention comprises a set of program segments that provides fast, deterministic real-time scheduling for the allocation of bandwidth for file transmissions. It allows the bandwidth allocated to a delivery to vary according to the amount of bandwidth available. A different amount of bandwidth may be allocated to each individual file transmission task. Higher priority transmissions may be allocated bandwidth before allocation to lower priority file transmissions.

  • Patent number: 6940822
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for transmitting time-critical data packets in digital wireless transmission systems. Time-critical data packets are used e.g., in the transmission of MPEG-coded signals, since information about the temporal positions of the data packets in relation to each other must be known in the MPEG decoder. The aim of the invention is to enable data packets of this type to be transmitted via a propagation time-constrained transmission link. To this end, time information relating to the temporal position of a particular data packet is tagged onto said data packet at the sender end. This time information is then used at the receiver end to re-establish the original temporal positions of the individual data packets in relation to each other.

  • Patent number: 6940830
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved method and apparatus for echo cancellation in a communication system utilizing a bidirectional transmission medium. The invention significantly reduces computational overhead associated with echo cancellation by using sub-Nyquist sampling in the echo path. In particular, the invention relates to a method and apparatus for echo cancellation in a communication system utilizing different signaling or baud rates in the transmit and receive directions, whereby the computational overhead of the echo cancellation is significantly reduced as compared to traditional methods. In a preferred embodiment herein, the present invention reduces by one-half the computational overhead associated with echo cancellation in a data communications system utilizing symmetrical information rates at asymmetrical signal rates.

  • Patent number: 6925089
Abstract: The present invention provides a network state machine which supports the three network states of the Home Phone Line Networking Alliance specification version 2.0 (HPNA 2.0) using two network states has been disclosed. When a station is in the V1M2 mode, instead of transmitting this frame in the 10M8 format frame with the gap frame, the frame is transmitted in the 1M8 format frame without any gaps in the frame. With this, the three network state equations of HPNA 2.0 collapses into two equations. With only two network states, the complexity of the network state machine is reduced, and a Physical Layer (PHY) which supports only the two network states may be used.

  • Patent number: 6920114
Abstract: A method of call control in a packet-based communication system having consoles, distributed among one or more console sites, that are adapted to monitor talkgroup calls. The console sites are served by console site links having a limited available bandwidth. Upon receiving a request for a talkgroup call, there is identified a number of priority consoles requesting participation in a talkgroup call. For example, the priority consoles (or console operators) may indicate that monitoring of the talkgroup call is “critical” for those consoles. Based on the location of the priority consoles, a number of priority console sites are identified for the talkgroup call. If sufficient bandwidth (e.g., call units of bandwidth) is available (or made available) to each of the priority console sites, the call is granted. Alternatively or additionally, the call may be granted to certain non-priority console sites if bandwidth is available.
