  • Patent number: 6901054
Abstract: For checking transfer of data cells in an asynchronous switching arrangement, cells are cyclically marked and counted before entering and after leaving the arrangement. A periodical time frame composed of N interleaved checking cycles is imposed. Each cycle (C1) includes two phases, a first phase (IC1) for marking and counting the cells, when received and before switching, and a second counting phase (OC1) for counting cells after switching. An identification mark is introduced in every cell received during the first phase of every cycle, it is linked to the position of this cycle in the time frame. Cells marked according to a cycle are counted as soon as switched during the second phase of the cycle, which starts with a determined delay (d1) during each first phase, for a determined duration (t2). A determination of the correspondence between the two counts obtained during a cycle is made and induces a fault signaling as soon as such a correspondence as otherwise determined is not obtained.

  • Patent number: 6882647
Abstract: A method of signalling a message using a terminal address across multiple network entities is provided. At least two contiguous network entities are associated with addressing spaces for which message addresses are not routable by way of the terminal address and are not otherwise routable by way of a single address. The method stores a terminal address of either an originating or terminating network entity. At every network border between any two contiguous network entities wherein an immediately succeeding network entity does not provide an address through which the message is routable, it is determined whether the address is to be stored and replaced with another address. If so, the address is stored so as to permit its subsequent retrieval. Once the address has been stored, the another address is assigned to be the address and the message is routed in the succeeding network using the another address.

  • Patent number: 6876654
Abstract: A packet forwarding method and apparatus performs multiprotocol routing (for IP and IPX protocols) and switching. Incoming data packets are examined and the flow (i.e., source and destination addresses and source and destination socket numbers) with which they are associated is determined. A flow table contains forwarding information that can be applied to the flow. If an entry is not present in the table for the particular flow, the packet is forwarded to the CPU to be processed. The CPU can then update the table with new forwarding information to be applied to all future packets belonging to the same flow. When the forwarding information is already present in the table, packets can thus be forwarded at wire speed. A dedicated ASIC is preferably employed to contain the table, as well as the engine for examining the packets and forwarding them according to the stored information. Decision-making tasks are thus more efficiently partitioned between the switch and the CPU so as to minimize processing overhead.
