Patent number: 8265652Abstract: A system for geographic tagging of network access points comprises a plurality of access points that have been configured to provide location information as part of their beacon. Each access point provides a service set identifier (SSID) that includes an encoded value that represents the location of the access point. The use of an encoded location value in the SSID of the access point is particularly advantageous because it does not require any additional hardware be added to the access point or the portable computing device. Moreover, location can be determined by any portable device without establishing a connection to the access point. The portable computing devices are adapted to receive the beacon, extract the location information from the beacon and decode the beacon.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2008Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Ricoh Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kurt W. Patent number: 8260315Abstract: A device, system, and method are directed towards updating location information for a social network. A request for the location information associated with a GPS coordinate is received from a client device associated with a member of the social network. In response to the request, a location name associated with another member of the social network is provided to the client device based on the GPS coordinate. Another location name may be received from the client device. The other location name may be associated with the GPS coordinate and with the member in the social network. Thus, the GPS coordinate and/or member may be associated with a plurality of location names. A location description may also be received and associated with the location name and with the member in the social network.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2011Date of Patent: September 4, 2012Assignee: Yahoo! Patent number: 8260272Abstract: A wireless opportunistic network that can facilitate data transfer by way of interconnected devices is disclosed. In accordance with this opportunistic network, each of the devices effectively contributes to the transfer of the information thereby obviating the need for an external carrier. In this manner, the carrier infrastructure is embodied and distributed throughout the individual devices of the network. In a particular aspect, the opportunistic network is employed to transfer and make available health-related data. This functionality can be used in many scenarios related to heath from, monitoring patients and conveying basic diagnostic data to identifying bioterrorism by way of collaborating data between a number of devices within the network. Essentially, the innovation provides for at least two core functional ideas, the opportunistic network infrastructure and the use of the network in health related scenarios.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2011Date of Patent: September 4, 2012Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Chris Demetrios Karkanias, Stephen Edward Hodges, James William Scott

Patent number: 8254483Abstract: A transmission within a wireless cellular network may include a first and second type of information. A subframe includes a plurality of symbols, at least one symbol is designated as a data symbol and at least one symbol is designated as a reference signal symbol that contains a pre-defined reference signal. The first type of information is embedded in the data symbols. If the second type of data is expected, then the second type of information is embedded in at least one reference symbol by quadrature amplitude modulating the pre-defined reference signal. The subframe is then transmitted from one node in the network to a second node. If it is determined that the second node is not expecting the second type of information, then a discontinuous transmission (DTX) response is embedded in the reference symbol instead of the second type of information.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2012Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventors: Zukang Shen, Tarik Muharemovic, Pierre Bertrand

Patent number: 8254872Abstract: Simplification of IMS registration in the event of emergency calls is made possible by apparatuses and a method for setting up an emergency-call connection from a terminal to an IMS via a network visited by the terminal, where, if the terminal is already registered in the IMS, setup of an emergency-call connection dispenses with IMS registration of the terminal in the IMS for this emergency-call connection if a comparison between a network identification for the visited network, of which the terminal was notified when it registered in the visited network, and a network identification for the terminal's home network reveals a match between these network identifications.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2007Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Assignee: Nokia Siemens Networks GmbH & Co.Inventor: Rainer Liebhart

Patent number: 8254937Abstract: Disclosed is a method for a femtocell to reduce interference with an overlapping macrocell. The femtocell determines soft-frequency-reuse (“SFR”) information of the macrocell. From that information, the femtocell determines which frequency sub-channels are assigned by the macrocell for its cell-center users and which frequency sub-channels are assigned for cell-edge users. (Cell-edge users are given a higher transmission power profile in order to overcome potential interference with neighboring macrocells.) Then, the femtocell selects from the cell-center user frequency sub-channels for transmission to the femtocell's users. By transmitting on the cell-center user frequency sub-channels, the femtocell reduces interference with the overlapping macrocell. The femtocell continues to update its knowledge of the macrocell's SFR information and re-assigns frequency sub-channels as the SFR changes.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2012Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Assignee: Motorola Mobility LLCInventors: Ning Xu, Jin Yang

Patent number: 8248978Abstract: Techniques for detecting other stations in a power efficient manner are described. A station may operate in a passive mode or a search mode. In the passive mode, the station receives for one receive period in each time interval. In the search mode, the station transmits for a series of transmit periods in one time interval, then receives for one receive period in the next time interval, and repeats the transmit/receive cycle. In an example scenario, station A operates in the search mode and sends a series of transmissions during its transmit periods. Station B operates in the passive mode, receives a transmission from station A during its receive period, switches to the search mode, and sends a series of transmissions for one time interval. Station A receives a transmission from station B during its receive period. After detecting one another, stations A and B may perform synchronization.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2006Date of Patent: August 21, 2012Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Xiandong Zhang, Mark S. Patent number: 8244205Abstract: A mobile device initiates an RRC connection reestablishment procedure or a cell update procedure for an emergency call after experiencing a failure condition in an LTE network environment. The mobile device establishes an RRC connection with an acceptable cell to originate an emergency call. The mobile device detects a failure condition, such as a radio link failure, which disrupts the RRC connection. The mobile device searches for available cells that it may reestablish the RRC connection with, but can only find acceptable cells. The mobile device may initiate an RRC connection reestablishment procedure with an acceptable cell. The mobile device may also only attempt to reestablish the RRC connection with a cell that is part of a PLMN that the original acceptable cell was also a part of. The mobile device may also enter an RRC_IDLE mode upon detecting a failure condition.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2011Date of Patent: August 14, 2012Assignee: HTC CorporationInventor: Chih-Hsiang Wu

Patent number: 8238308Abstract: The present invention relates to a handover method that a current coordinator transfers a coordinating function of controlling a network to a different device configuring the network. The present invention relates to a method of selecting an optimal device as a coordinator in selecting the different device using priority information decided by a prescribed evaluation reference. And, the present invention relates to a method of simplifying a procedure in a manner of transmitting relevant information together with a handover request message. In a wireless network including a coordinator, a secondary coordinator is decided in advance. If the coordinator is suddenly unable to perform a function, the present invention relates to a method of enabling the function of the coordinator to be performed by the decided secondary coordinator. Thus, a process for transferring the coordinating function without the handover process is called a recovery process.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2010Date of Patent: August 7, 2012Assignee: LG Electronics Inc.Inventors: Beom Jin Jeon, Hyeon Cheol Cho, Taek Soo Kim
