Abstract: A metal halide lamp has a long life since the temperature of the electrodes can be prevented from excessively rising. The metal halide lamp has an arc tube 3 that is composed of a light emitting part 1 and a sealing part 2 at each end of the light emitting part 1. A pair of electrodes 4 are extended from the ends of the arc tube 3 into the discharge chamber of the light emitting part 1 so that the discharge side ends of the electrodes 4 face each other. The other end of each electrode 4 is connected to a conductor 5 sealed in the sealing part 2. A part of the electrode 4, sealed in the sealing part 2, from the boundary between the light emitting part 1 and the sealing part 2 to the discharge side end of the conductor 5 is referred to as the electrode sealing part L. A metal member 7 partially covers the electrode sealing part L. The ratio of the weight A (mg) of the metal member 7 to the weight B (mg) of the electrode sealing part L is defined as an inequality 0.2≦A/B≦1.6.

  • Patent number: 6464383
Abstract: A surgical task light is provided including a light source adapted to generate light. An elongate optical fiber carries the light generated by the light source to a remote target site. The optical fiber includes a proximal end for receiving the light generated by the light source and a distal end for emitting the light. A support member supports the optical fiber relative to the ceiling of an associated operating room and holds the optical fiber in a plurality of selected positions. A lens device is carried on the distal end of the optical fiber for focusing the light emitted from the distal end of the optical fiber into a desired selected pattern. A sterile sheath member in combination with the surgical task light provides a sterile barrier between the surgical area and the mechanical and optical portions of the task light. A re-lamping module includes a replaceable light bulb module carrying a light bulb to help facilitate replacement of the light bulb by maintenance personnel.

  • Patent number: 6457844
Abstract: A lighting device has a light source and a light distributor arranged under it. Said light distributor has a distributor element which preferably consists of sheet metal and has an extensive main section with an incidence side facing the light source and a number of holes for the passage of light which widen in the direction away from the incidence side, and a collar for each of said holes. Preferably, a diffuser is arranged above the distributor element and possibly a diaphragm, preferably consisting of sheet metal, is arranged above said diffuser. The light distributor deflects and distributes light radiated downward through it, in such a way that said light makes at least a desired angle of, for example, at least 25° with a horizontal plane. The light distributor can be produced with a small height and economically and has a good antidazzle effect.

  • Patent number: 6443583
Abstract: A backlight has a light source housing, having a light concentrating portion and fixing portions, and an opening, wherein the opening's upper and lower sides, namely, the upper and lower boundaries between the light concentrating portion and the fixing portions on the housing are located vertically between the upper and lower sides of the light entering surface of the light pipe. Therefore, light is prevented from entering the gap between the housing and the light pipe, and is instead reflected on the inner surface of the light concentrating portion to enter the light pipe through the light entering surface, so that the entering light contributes to improve the brightness of the collimated light.

  • Patent number: 6419375
Abstract: Luminaires intended to deliver maximal light flux with improved uniformity, the invention provides in certain embodiments a shielding device or flux manager which produces target extinctions by management of flux to precisely pass flux nearby original arc and through a second bounce off the reflector structure to direct that flux back into the beam. A virtual arc is thus produced in proximity to the original arc with the virtual arc acting as a second source. The flux manager acts to reduce glare and “spill” light. Performance optimization is further provided in embodiments using the flux manager through additional use of a multi-faceted reflector insert which re-aims light which would have been incident on portions of the reflector structure and which light is blocked by the flux manager. The improved light distribution of the several embodiments of the invention allow use of the flux management concept in lighting fixtures of varying type.

  • Patent number: 6406163
Abstract: A solar cell lighting fixture is integrated with a heat sink adapted to a lantern, a garden light, a wall fitting, a portable lighting fixture or other lighting fixtures, or on a mobile vehicle including an automobile, a sea vessel, an aircraft, a bicycle, or a motorcycle. A support structure with a predetermined configuration is provided between an upper lid with a solar cell panel, and a bulb is provided below the upper lid. A bulb housing contains battery components, such as a secondary cell or a battery capacitor, a charging circuit or a component to convert electrical energy into optical energy, and operation and control circuits. The support structure defines a space for the heat sink, thus allowing heat dissipation for the area between the upper lid and the bulb, thus protecting the charging circuit and battery components contained inside the bulb housing from being damaged or having their performance negatively affected by heat built up due to prolonged exposure to the direct sun.
