  • Patent number: 5265378
Abstract: A contact structure is formed atop a semiconductor wafer at a level whereat it is desired to terminate polishing of a layer overlying the contact structure. When the contact structure becomes exposed to a polishing slurry, an electrical characteristic, such as resistance or impedance, is registered by measuring apparatus. In one embodiment, two or more contact structures are formed atop the wafer, vias are formed through the wafer, and the vias are filled, thereby providing a conductive path from the contact structures to the back side of the wafer. The measuring apparatus probes the filled vias on the back side of the wafer. A change in resistance/impedance indicates that the contact structures have become exposed during polishing, and polishing is terminated. In another embodiment of the invention, one or more contact structures are formed atop the wafer. The measuring apparatus is connected to a probe in the polishing slurry, and to the wafer itself, such as to the back side of the wafer.

  • Patent number: 5247766
Abstract: Undersized cooling holes for air cooling a gas turbine component or the like, are formed at low cost, and are later enlarged to increase the flow rate of cooling air therethrough by blowing a mixture of abrasive grit through the holes to enlarge them. Air without the grit is thereafter passed through the holes and the resulting increased flow rate is measured to see if it is at a satisfactory level. If it is not, the process is repeated until the desired accurate flow rate is achieved.

  • Patent number: 5245797
Abstract: A manual sanding tool has a block for holding a sheet of sand paper and a housing which may be attached to the block. The block has two ridges, each with a convex top surface. The two ridges are proximate opposed sides of the block; a shaft projects from the block inwardly of, and adjacent to, each ridge. An inverted box shaped member associated with each ridge has an elongate slot which receives the shaft such that the box member may be wiped over the top of the ridge to a position on the back surface of the block. In wiping over the top surface of the ridge, the box shaped member pulls on the end of any sandpaper between it and the ridge in order to tighten the sandpaper on the block. A nut may then secure the box shaped member in place on the back surface of the ridge. A passageway through a clip attached to the housing may receive a smaller diameter hook. The hook terminates in a socket for receiving a pole.

  • Patent number: 5245790
Abstract: A technique for chemi-mechanical polishing of semiconductor wafers using ultrasonic energy is disclosed. A transducer is mounted in the polishing system, either to a platen to which the polishing pad is mounted, or to a carrier to which the semiconductor wafer is mounted. In either case, relative vibratory motion is established between the wafer and the polishing pad. The transducer may also be mounted within the reservoir containing the platen, carrier and polishing slurry, to agitate the slurry itself. By vibrating the polishing pad relative to the wafer, polish rate and repeatability are enhanced, the polishing process is less sensitive to pad use history, and the pad is somewhat self-conditioning.

  • Patent number: 5233791
Abstract: An apparatus for grinding pipe comprises a tool body and means for rotating and advancing the tool body longitudinally through a pipe to be ground. At least one grinding tool is mounted on the tool body carrying a grinding element and adapted to extend outwardly to contact and grind the internal surface of the pipe when the tool body is inserted therein. • Patent number: 5231805
Abstract: A machine adapted to be maneuvered across a surface, typically a floor, in order to remove an unwanted coating such as asbestos and adhesive from the floor. An impeller hurls an abradent such as metal shot at an angle against the floor abrading the material which then rebounds along with the abradent up into a return channel where the abradent shot and the abraded material are separated. The shot is returned to the impeller. The abrasion takes place in a downward facing cavity. A wetting spray outside the cavity in advance of the forward end of the machine wets the surface in advance of the abrasion and creates a mist within the cavity which cools the flow of material rebounding from the surface. The presence of the mist greatly abates the dispersion of the abraded material permitting it to be discharged into a collecting drum without contaminating the ambient air.
