  • Patent number: 4562326
Abstract: The longitudinal edge portions of a cylindrical wheel rim blank are gripped by a pair of laterally spaced clamping assemblies each having a radially fixed inside clamping member and each having a radially movable outside clamping member adapted to clamp the blank against the inside member. After the rim blank has been clamped, the two clamping members of one of the clamping assemblies are pivoted laterally toward the clamping members of the other assembly to press the edges of the rim blank against one another preparatory to welding current being directed through the blank to weld the edges. A load cell detects the force applied to the pivoted clamping assembly and produces a signal which is used to monitor or control the force.

  • Patent number: 4558202
Abstract: For making defect-free welds for joining two austenitic stainless steel mers, using gas tungsten-arc welding, a thin foil-like iron member is placed between the two steel members to be joined, prior to making the weld, with the foil-like iron member having a higher melting point than the stainless steel members. When the weld is formed, there results a weld nugget comprising melted and then solidified portions of the joined members with small portions of the foil-like iron member projecting into the solidified weld nugget. The portions of the weld nugget proximate the small portions of the foil-like iron member which project into the weld nugget are relatively rich in iron. This causes these iron-rich nugget portions to display substantial delta ferrite during solidification of the weld nugget which eliminates weld defects which could otherwise occur.

  • Patent number: 4551604
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for forming a circular, honeycomb-type engine seal from pre-formed core strip having male and female nodes. The apparatus includes a source of strip and means for forming the strip into a circular seal configuration wherein the male and female nodes of the strip are automatically juxtaposed to each other for weldment as relative movement between the forming means and the source occurs to withdraw additional strip from the core strip source. As the relative movement continues, the juxtaposed male and female nodes are exposed to welding head means of the apparatus which welds the male and female nodes to one another. The forming means includes means for causing said relative movement constituted by drive means which is adjustable to permit forming means of different sizes to be utilized. The movement of the forming means permits successive layers or laminae of the strip to be welded to each other in circular form until a seal of the desired dimension is achieved.

  • Patent number: 4546229
Abstract: A process is described for preparing aluminum sheet for resistance welding, which increases the useful life of the welding electrodes used for welding the thus prepared sheet. The process comprises the steps of: (a) treating both surfaces of the sheet portion to be welded to remove the non-uniform mill finish oxide layer and provide clean surfaces, and (b) providing a thin oxide layer on one cleaned surface and a thicker oxide layer on the other cleaned surface of said sheet, thereby creating a differential in oxide thickness between the surfaces of the sheet and hence a differential in surface resistance.

  • Patent number: 4538045
Abstract: An electrical terminal having a wire clamping tab connected thereto by an essentially thin neck portion about which a wire coated with a resin-type, high temperature insulation is adapted to be wound so that, when the tab is bent back against the terminal by opposed, energized electrodes to clamp a portion of the wire extending from the neck portion therebetween, resistance of the latter to flow of current heats both the neck portion and the wire wrapped therearound sufficiently to explode the insulation from the wire to assure a good electrical connection. At the same time the relatively large area of the terminal and its clamping tab maintains the clamped portion of the wire below its annealing temperature so that it is resistant to breakage in use.
