Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions without added iron and methods for prophylactic nutritional supplementation and therapeutic nutritional supplementation. Specifically, the method involves administering to an individual a composition comprising carotenoids, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, pantothenic acid, cobalamin, magnesium, manganese, zinc, selenium, chromium, copper, alpha lipoic acid, and lutein, wherein the composition is free of added iron.
Abstract: An improved rapidly disintegrating flavored film that quickly and completely disintegrates on food items, including precooked food items, such as hamburgers, chicken, and pizza, includes a hydroxypropyl cellulose, a modified starch and a flavor ingredient. The flavored films of this invention completely disintegrate on precooked food items in less than a minute, and often in less than 30 seconds, whereas previously known flavored films typically do not completely dissolve on precooked food items. The flavored films of this invention may be advantageously employed for uniformly and reproducibly flavoring food items at a desired level.
Abstract: Compositions with synergistic anti-inflammatory effects in inflammatory diseases resulting from activation and consequent degranulation of mast cells and followed by secretion of inflammatory biomolecules from the activated mast cells, composed of a heavily sulfated, non-bovine proteoglycan such as shark cartilage chondroitin sulfate C, and one or more of a hexosamine sulfate such as D-glucosamine sulfate, a flavone such as quercetin, an unrefined olive kernel extract that increases absorption of these compositions in various routes of administration, S-adenosylmethionine, a histamine-1 receptor antagonist, a histamine-3 receptor agonist, an antagonist of the actions of CRH, caffeine, and a polyamine.
Abstract: Overnight relief of constipation symptoms is achieved, and control of bowel function is enhanced by oral administration of an effective or sufficient amount of a composition comprising polyethylene glycol (PEG), preferably dispersed and or dissolved in an aqueous medium. The PEG compositions used for the present invention are preferably substantially free of ancillary electrolytes.

Abstract: A composition and method for enhancing immune response and improving the overall health of canines is provided which includes feeding the canines a dietary composition containing an effective amount of garlic in an amount of from about 1 to 10 g/kg diet. The dietary composition, when fed to canines, provides antioxidant, anticancer, and immunomodulatory benefits. The canines are fed the composition containing an effective amount of garlic in a quantity and frequency appropriate for their nutritional needs resulting in an enhanced immune response by increased lymphocyte blastogenesis and improves the overall health of the animal.

Abstract: The invention concerns compositions from modified starches, such as starch ethers or oxidized starch, more particularly hydroxpropylated starch (HPS) or hydroxylethylated starch (HES) for the use in pharmaceutical, veterinary, food, cosmetic or other products like films for wrapping food, aspics or jellies, preferably for predosed formulations like soft or hard capsules. The hard capsules obtained by the present invention with a conventional dipping molding process are similar to hard gelatine capsules (HGC).

Abstract: A dressing and method of treating wounds is provided. The dressing can comprise water-soluble or swellable polymers capable of forming viscous aqueous or non-aqueous solution and form a gel, and which may be dehydrated and milled to form a powder. The dressing can be constructed in the form of a sponge or sheet impregnated with the gel, or may contain a tooth-whitener, and may be coated onto a non-porous, porous or micro-porous backing. Wounds treated with dressings in accordance with embodiment of the invention will tend to heal without the formation of a typical hard scab. The dressing may also be covered with a protective coating such as a cyanoacrylic liquid or spray, or may be attached to a backing such as an adhesive bandage to protect the wound from an excessively fluids environment and from mechanical stresses.
Abstract: Processes for conveniently and economically producing L-arabinose, enzyme-treated products containing L-arabinose, diet foods and diabetic foods containing L-arabinose with dietary fiber, and fruit or vegetable juices containing L-arabinose are provided.
(1) A process for producing L-arabinose by treating a natural material containing arabinan, arabinoxylan or arabinogalactan with an enzyme having an activity of acting on natural substances containing arabinan, arabinoxylan or arabinogalactan and thus releasing L-arabinose to give L-arabinose, characterized in that the above-described natural substance is directly treated with the above-described enzyme without separating or extracting arabinan, arabinoxylan or arabinogalactan.
Abstract: Compostions of GLA and/or other EFAs with TA or related compounds, and their use in therapy or nutrition or in preparation of composition for therapy or nutrition, especially to improve cell membrane EFA concentration and/or (particularly in diabetic complications) impaired nerve function and blood flow.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for increasing the bone mineralization of a human, and more preferably an infant or toddler. The method comprises administering to said human a source of calcium and a fat blend that is low in palmitic acid. The enhanced mineralization results in the production of a higher peak bone mass and correspondingly lowers the incidence of osteoporosis.
