  • Patent number: 6392990
Abstract: A method and system for recovering transparently from a network interface failure. The method is to be run in a computing device on a network with multiple peer computing devices, having redundant network interfaces connected with redundant cables. The method transparently recovers from network failures by first establishing an address list of the peer computing devices on the subnet. The computing device then periodically tests the communication link with one or more of the peer computing devices until at least one peer device responds thereby sending its network address. The computing device then uses the peer network address to retest the communication link with the peer device until the peer device does not respond. If there is no response, the computing device reassigns the network address of the computing device from the primary network interface to the redundant network interface.

  • Patent number: 6359895
Abstract: The inside of a managed side device managed by a manager of a managing device has a tree-structure consisting of points #1 to #3 of the first to third layers. When a failure occurs, at the point #3 of the bottom layer, loss priority is allocated to a PDU and is transmitted to the point #2 in a higher order. When the number of PDUs is greater than the threshold of the number of alarms, at the point #2 a buffer is prevented from overflowing by instructing a lower order point not to transmit a PDU, or by eliminating PDUs with loss priority lower than the threshold of loss priority. By executing these processes at each point, congestion due to the concentration of PDUs can be locally processed.

  • Patent number: 6349088
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for traffic control in a communication system transferring traffic units. The invention includes maintaining a continuously changing quantity determining whether an individual traffic unit can be forwarded, changing the value of the quantity so that a traffic density lower than a specific predetermined value changes the value of the quantity in a first direction, but no more than up to a predetermined first limit, and a traffic density higher than said predetermined value changes the value in a second direction. Further, the inventing relates to rejecting traffic units as the value of the quantity in said second direction reaches a specific predetermined second limit.

  • Patent number: 6339595
Abstract: A service provider's routers (PE1, P1, P2, PE2) provide connections between and share routine information with routers (CE1, CE2) of a customer virtual private network (VPN) as well as routers of other customers' VPNs, which may have overlapping address spaces. A service provider's edge router (PE1) informed by the customer's router (CE1) that it will forward packets to a given prefix notifies the other edge router (PE2) that PE1 can forward packets to that address prefix if the destination is in the VPN to which CE1 belongs. PE1 also tells PE2 to tag any thus-destined packets with a particular tag T3. PE2 stores this information in a forwarding information base that it separately keeps for that VPN so that when PE2 receives from a router CE2 in the same VPN a packet whose destination address has that prefix, it tags the packet as requested. But PE2 also tags it with a tag T2 that the router P2 to which PE2 first sends it has asked PE2 to apply to packets to be sent to PE1.

  • Patent number: 6330248
Abstract: A gigabit network node having a media access controller outputting data frames at gigabit rates uses multiple 100 MB/s media interface links coupled to a physical interface to enable implementation of a gigabit network using low cost data links. A modified reconciliation layer, also referred to as a media interface, receives a data frame from a gigabit MAC and selectively stores the received packet data into one of a plurality of transmit buffers associated with the respective 100 MB/s media interface links, according to a path selection arbitration logic in the media interface. The path selection arbitration logic may operate according to an equal priority scheme, where each received data frame is routed according to a round-robin scheme.

  • Patent number: 6310864
Abstract: Disclosed is a circuit and method that eliminates the problem of voice echo created by the use of simultaneous voice and data (SVD) modems in a remote office application. In the instant invention, a voice signal originates in a remote office telephone and is modulated with a data signal and sent from a first SVD modem to a second SVD modem, where it is demodulated and then routed from the second SVD modem back into the switching network to a second telephone where a voice echo signal may be created by existing hybrid transformers. This echo signal will follow the return path of the voice signal to the second SVD modem where it is modulated with a data signal, sent back to the first SVD modem, demodulated, and then routed back to the remote telephone. The echo and voice signal is thus delayed by the modulation and demodulation of the voice and data signals in both SVD modems by a time period of greater than thirty-five milliseconds.

  • Patent number: 6307844
Abstract: An uplink channel transmission power control method is provided for a CDMA mobile communication system performing one way communication. A base station measures the received level of data transmitted from each mobile terminal at each channel, and generates a transmission power control signal of each uplink traffic channel. The generated transmission power control signals are multiplexed, and the multiplexed common transmission power control signal is transmitted to all mobile terminals by using the common channel shared by the mobile terminals. Each mobile terminal derives the transmission power control signal of the uplink traffic channel used by the terminal, from the received common transmission power control signal, and controls the transmission power of a data packet.

  • Patent number: 6304551
Abstract: A scheme for determining the usage parameter control (UPC) values for an arbitrary traffic source from observations of its emitted cell stream is disclosed. The UPC values are used in a traffic shaping mechanism based on a dual leaky bucket, which shapes the cell stream by either discarding or delaying cells. The choice of UPC values is a function of the statistical characteristics of the observed cell stream; the user's tolerance for delay prior to the network access point; and the cost incurred on the network side. The chosen UPC values are then negotiated with the network. The source traffic characteristics may change dramatically over time, making the initially negotiated UPC descriptor inappropriate for the entire traffic stream. Hence, a method is disclosed for dynamically renegotiating UPC parameters whenever a predetermined change in traffic characteristics is detected.

  • Patent number: 6298038
Abstract: A configuration for a transport node of a telecommunication system comprises a pair of transparent mux/demuxs provided at two sites and connected over a high rate span. The T-Muxs provide continuity of all tribs and maintain a lower bit rate linear or ring system through the higher bit rate span. The lower bit rate linear or ring system operates as if it were directly connected without the higher bit rate midsection. For the forward direction of the traffic, the T-Mux comprises a multi-channel receiver for receiving a the trib signals and providing for each trib signal a trib data signal and a trib OAM&P signal. The data signals are multiplexed into a supercarrier data signal and the OAM&P signals are processed to generate a supercarrier OAM&P signal. A supercarrier transmitter maps the supercarrier data signal and the supercarrier OAM&P signal into a supercarrier signal and transmits same over the high rate span. Reverse operations are effected for the reverse direction of traffic.

  • Patent number: 6292479
Abstract: A voice call is transported through diverse network paths including a switched telephone network and a wide area data internetwork, for example, the Internet. In routing the call, common channel signalling is used to provide data identifying a calling subscriber line from a calling PSTN, which information can then be transported through the separate data internetwork to the destination PSTN, at which the data is then extracted and sent to the called subscriber line while completing routing of the call. A route for the call is established at gateways connected to the data internetwork at the interface points with the calling and destination PSTNs, calling subscriber line information and dialed digit information being conveyed to the gateways. The destination end gateway initiates a call connection to the calling subscriber line via the destination PSTN to complete routing of the call, while supplying identification of the calling subscriber line in a form recognized as such by the called PSTN.

  • Patent number: RE37826
Abstract: Four (4) unshielded twisted pairs of wires connect a hub and a computer in an Ethernet system: one (1) pair for transmission only, another for reception only and the other two (2) for transmission and reception. The signals in the wires are in packets each having timing signals defining a preamble and thereafter having digital signals representing information as by individual ones of three (3) amplitude levels. The signals received at the computer are provided with an automatic gain control (AGC) and then with digital conversions at a particular rate. A control loop operative upon the digital conversions regulates the AGC gain at a particular value. An equalizer operative only during the occurrence of the digital signals in each packet selects an individual one of the three (3) amplitude levels closest to the amplitude of each digital conversion at the time assumed to constitute the conversion peak.
