  • Patent number: 6463267
Abstract: A high frequency power amplifying apparatus is provided with an amplifying section with a plurality of amplifying stages connected in cascade. A power control signal is supplied to the amplifying section through a control terminal so as to control the output of the high frequency power amplifying apparatus. Each of the amplifying stages has a gain smaller than that of a preceding stage. Gain control signals generated from the power control signal are supplied to the respective amplifying stages. Dividing resistors are connected in series with one another between the control terminal and a reference potential so as to divide the voltage of the power control signal to thereby generate a plurality of different gain control signals. Different ones of the gain control signals are supplied to the respective amplifying stages, an absolute value of a voltage of the gain control signal applied to each stage is larger than that applied to an earlier preceding stage.

  • Patent number: 6463293
Abstract: Terminals having analog/digital telephone functions as well as data exchange functions are typically used by users who have a lower skill level than the average user of a personal computer. Therefore, such a terminal should be as self-supporting and independent as possible, which could be realized by selecting and storing addresses of access providers and/or server providers in a non-mechanical terminal memory, which could further comprise software for performing protocols. Then the terminal is almost completely ready for use, with complex and time-consuming installment by a user no longer being necessary.

  • Patent number: 6463285
Abstract: The penalties associated with relying on layer-4 to handle packets lost as a result of a handoff can be reduced by forwarding, in response to a handoff request from a first base station to a second base station, at least one layer-2 frame of a layer-3 packet destined to/from the wireless terminal that has been passed down from layer-3 to layer-2, and so is indicated to have been transmitted at layer-3 even though not all of the layer-2 frames of the layer-3 packet have actually been transmitted. In one embodiment of the invention, each of the at least one layer-2 frames may be encapsulated together in a special layer-3 packet that is transferred from the first base to the second base station in the usual manner of inter-base-station communication. Advantageously, packets are not lost at layer-4 due to handoffs. Thus, layer-4 retransmissions are not required, and so delays in the network are reduced.

  • Patent number: 6463105
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided which calculate a carrier to interference ratio of a channel using an approach which accounts for variations in the channel response characteristics over the estimation evaluation time period. The time variations may be taken into account by various alternative approaches including breaking the sample period into a series of sub-sample estimation windows and applying a different constant channel response estimate to each sub-sample estimation window or by applying a time varying model to the channel when generating the channel response estimate (such as a least squares error fit to a first order or higher order equation). Accordingly, the systems and methods of the present invention may provide for improved estimates of the carrier to interference ratio, particularly for channels subject to multi-path fading effects such as those which may result from movement of a mobile terminal during measurements of the channel.

  • Patent number: 6463269
Abstract: A product and system is disclosed for intelligently controlling the number of amplifier modules that are active in a linear amplification system. By exercising such control, the system can avoid using unnecessary power. The invention monitors the system and gathers information from signals associated with the system, particularly information concerning signal power. A control functionality evaluates the gathered information to decide how many modules are necessary to sufficiently operate the amplification system or to decide if it has been commanded to perform certain functions. Once this decision is made, the control functionality communicates control signals to the power amplification modules to activate the needed or desired number of modules and deactivate the unneeded or undesired number of modules. Likewise, the control functionality configures the splitter and the combiner according to the number of needed or desired amplifier modules. This gathering, evaluation, and control is conducted continuously.

  • Patent number: 6459884
Abstract: The characteristics of a radio channel is estimated over which pilot signals are transmitted consecutively together with TPC signals in the cdma2000 system. From the pilot signals demodulated into baseband signals, obtained are correlated values of a field of the pilot signals preceding the TPC field and of the TPC signals with the spread spectrum codes. Both of the correlated values are operated to determine data represented by the TPC signals. The data thus determined are removed from the TPC signals to restore the pilot signals which would have appeared unless multiplied with the spread spectrum codes in the TPC bit field. The characteristics of the radio channel are estimated from the pilot signals including the TPC bit field from which the data determined have been removed.

  • Patent number: 6459916
Abstract: A small-sized flat antenna mounted on a portable radio communication device is available for a narrow bandwidth, and the resonance frequency of the flat antenna varies due to interference between the flat antenna and surrounding dielectrics such as a housing and a human body. As a result, the transmission efficiency and reception sensitivity of the antenna have been impaired. A communicating section (constructed of a coaxial line or a microstrip line)is arranged in a portable radio communication device having a circularly polarized antenna for satellite communication, so that an appropriate distance is provided not only between a housing of the portable radio communication device and the antenna but also between a human body and the antenna.

  • Patent number: 6456837
Abstract: A tradesworker's radio has a weather and impact resistant features to enable a tradesworker to use the radio under adverse working conditions, such as construction or other work sites. Louvered grills covering moisture resistant loudspeakers are angled downward to protect the speakers from direct splash in case the radio is left outdoors in a heavy downpour. A layer of felt-like material is interspersed between the louvered grills and the loudspeaker cones to offer improved moisture resistance. A non-telescoping antenna of the rubber covered spring type material folds neatly into recess when not in use. The controls include waterproof pushbuttons for on/off, volume adjustment, a weather channel, AM/FM selection and tuning. Elastomeric blocks are bonded to the interior of the housing and the blocks have bonded threaded studs, which are used to shock mount the radio circuit board to the inside of the housing. This circuit board is treated with a conformal coating to improve its moisture resistance.
