  • Patent number: 6445692
Abstract: The present invention utilizes a filter that works on an algorithm that filters out multiuser and multi-path interference. The algorithm is programmed into the DSP processors of receiver handsets and base stations in cellular and multihop wireless radio networks which use the CDMA technology. It can also be implemented in hardware. Additionally, the invention works in a blind manner such that it learns without requiring training samples. The algorithm can be expressed as updating the receiver parameter vector f(n) as: f(n+1)=[I−C(CHC)−1CH][f(n)−mfy(n)yH(n)f(n)]+C(CHC)−1g(n) wherein y(n) is a data vector for each transmitted bit W1(n) from user 1, the receiver will estimate that bit by filtering y(n), i.e. w1(n)=fH(n)y(h), where H denotes Hermitian; g(n) corresponds to the multipath parameters and is updated by a separate revision; and C is a matrix constructed from elements of the desired user's spreading code.

  • Patent number: 6445934
Abstract: A method and apparatus for entering an alphanumeric character with an accent or extension into an electronic device. A base character is entered into the device using a keypad, and the base character is then displayed on the device display. Next, a table that includes a plurality of accents or extensions is displayed for the user on the device display. The user then selects an accent or extension from the table that the user wishes to associate with the base character. After the selection of the accent or extension from the table by the user, the base character is replaced on the device display with a composite character that consists of the base character and the accent or extension selected by the user from the table.

  • Patent number: 6445909
Abstract: To reduce the number of signal lines in the inside of a radio receiver which determines a reference voltage based on data supplied from an external CPU, the first and second reference value data from the external CPU (1) is supplied to an input section (20) of a PLL control circuit (19), and then latched by a latch circuit (21). The latched data is converted into an analogue reference voltage in D/A converters (23, 24). The reference voltage is transferred to a radio receiving circuit (2) to be supplied to comparison circuits (16, 18) via a single line, respectively, in the inside of the radio receiving circuit (2).

  • Patent number: 6442398
Abstract: In one embodiment of method and appartus for determining loading in a communication system, the communication system accumulates a power control commands series and corresponding transmit gain adjustments series between a base station and a designated remote station, under regular operating conditions. After transmissions form the remaining remote stations are interrupted, the communication system repeats the accumulation, and determines the loading according to the accumulated series. Alternatively, the communication system measures power of a test signal injected into base station receiver, under regular operating conditions. After transmissions form the remote stations are interrupted, the communication system repeats the measurement, and determines the loading according to the two measurements. Alternatively, the communication system measures gain of an AGC at the base station's receiver, under regular operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 6442384
Abstract: A system and method of identifying the source of uplink and downlink interference in a disturbed cell of a wireless telecommunications network. Initially, call events occurring in offending cells are recorded. In conjunction, the disturbance events occurring in the disturbed cell of the telecommunications network are recorded. The recorded call events with recorded disturbance events are then correlated. A distribution of disturbed and offending cells within the telecommunications network as a function of time is computed to obtain a statistical correlation of call events in offending cells and subsequent disturbances resulting in the disturbed cell to identify the possible source of disturbances that caused the sealing of the sealed device with in the disturbed cell.

  • Patent number: 6442385
Abstract: A time diversity satellite system provides geosynchronous satellites in tundra orbits in three orbital planes. The satellites traverse a common figure-eight ground track comprising northern and southern loops. Power modes and early and late operating modes of the satellites are selectively switched to select the satellite currently traversing the northern loop be the late satellite delivering a late signal, that is, a delayed early signal, to satellite receivers. A receiver can therefore employ a relatively small buffer for storing the early satellite signal for only the selected channel in a multi-channel TDM content signal without experiencing latency problems when selecting a new channel.

  • Patent number: 6442391
Abstract: The present invention relates to determining the geographic location of a mobile station in a mobile communications system. The object of the invention is to protect the integrity of the user of the mobile station, so as to prevent the location of the mobile station being established by an outsider against the will of the user. In this respect, an authorization check is carried out in conjunction with a request for determination of the geographical location of a mobile station. The geographical location is only determined when authorization is found for the mobile station to be located. This authorization control involves checking that the user of the mobile station has granted permission for the location of his mobile station MS to be determined on the part of an outsider. The authority check may also include the condition that only certain outsiders may be informed of the geographical location of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6438374
Abstract: A wireless communication service network includes a message processing system with at least two programmable application processors (APs) providing operational, administrative and maintenance support for one or more cell base stations in the network serving one or more wireless radio units. Improved control of the AP message processing resources is provided in response to an AP shutdown condition. In accordance with the improvement, an initial overload control (OLC) threshold is set for the APs, and the APs are monitored during their operation as they perform message processing. In the event that one of the APs becomes non-operational (non-operating AP), the OLC threshold relative to one or more remaining operational APs is dynamically increased.

  • Patent number: 6438382
Abstract: A mobile terminal uses stored GPS data to expedite position determination when placing emergency calls. The mobile terminal receives supporting GPS data such as almanac and ephemeris information from a supporting digital wireless network when digital service is available. When operating in an analog service area where GPS data is not available from the analog wireless network, the mobile terminal uses GPS data previously received in a digital service area, unless that data is too old to be useful. Additionally, the mobile terminal can periodically update its stored GPS data while in standby in an analog service area, based on receiving the needed data directly from available GPS satellites. The mobile terminal or digital wireless network may automatically update GPS data stored in the mobile terminal based on the age of stored data, or based on the probability of moving into an analog service area.

  • Patent number: 6438363
Abstract: In addition to aligning a first unit for proper forward link communications in a wireless environment, there is a method of alignment where a reverse link signal is transmitted from the first unit to a second unit, so that the first unit may be positioned based on at least one signal quality parameter measure contained in a forward link signal reply to the reverse link signal. The method enables an installer to verify signal quality in both the forward link and reverse link directions by reviewing indications of received signal strength for both the reverse link and forward link directions on an LED display, so as to position the first unit for achieving acceptable signal strength in both directions.
