  • Patent number: 9148673
Abstract: Various implementations relate to depth map coding. In one method, a depth coding rate and depth distortion are determined for a coding mode. Based on the value of depth distortion, a correlation coefficient is determined between at least a portion of a video picture and a translated version of the video picture. The video picture is one or more of a video picture corresponding to the depth being coded, or a rendered video picture for a different view. A video distortion is determined based on the correlation coefficient, and is used to evaluate the coding mode. Another implementation determines a multiplier, to be used in a rate-distortion cost, based on pixel values from one or more of a video picture from a particular view or a rendered video picture for a different view.

  • Patent number: 9007463
Abstract: Video frames of a baseball game are analyzed to determine a track for the participants in the game and to update a digital record of the game. The merging of participants in a video frame is resolved by associating the participants' tracks before and/or after the merging with a most likely participant role, such as a player, coach or umpire role. The role of one merged participant can be used to deduce the role of the other merged participant. In this way, the digital record can be completed even for the merged period. The role of a participant can be based, e.g., on the location of the participant relative to a base, a coach's box region, a pitcher's mound, a dugout, or a fielding position, or by determining that a participant is running along a path to a base or performing some other movement.

  • Patent number: 8891619
Abstract: Statistics for estimating quantization factors of a coding-unit type (e.g., B-coded or I-coded) pictures are determined from other, possibly different (e.g., P-coded) pictures, or previously coded coding-units. Bit rate and quality relationships between such coding-unit types may be used with the quantization parameters. Estimating bit rate and quality relationships between coding-unit types enables accurate rate control for pictures regardless of their coding-unit type. Bit rate and quality relationships between coding-unit types can be used with multiple rate control models to increase compression. Rate control parameters may be adjusted with statistics generated by a motion estimation and compensation framework. Rate control performance may be controlled in transcoding compressed bit streams.

  • Patent number: 8811486
Abstract: A motion detection portion of a video encoding apparatus conducts motion detection on each of frame macroblocks and field macroblocks to calculate motion vectors and respective detection cost. A motion vector evaluation value calculation portion calculates an evaluation value of the size of motion vectors. A motion vector threshold determination portion compares the evaluation value of the size of motion vectors to a predetermined threshold to determine whether the target area is a moving area or a still area. If the target area is a moving area, it is determined whether frame or field macroblock mode is to be used by comparing the detection costs. If the target area is a still area, it is determined whether frame or field macroblock mode is to be used in accordance with the size of the sum of absolute values of differences between neighboring pixels in a vertical direction regarding the frame macroblock and field macroblock.
