  • Patent number: 4884800
Abstract: A compact portable rowing machine features a hollow container that holds a supply of water. Pulling on a drive cord during a pulling segment of a stroke rotates a paddle or like mechanism located within the container to rotate the water to produce a momentum effect. Turbulence in the water provides fluid resistance to the rotation of the paddle. A drive cord is wrapped on a double spool mounted on a clutch to drive the paddle in one direction. The wrapping is such that changing the length of the drive cord between the spool and a handle gripped by a user changes the radius at which tangential force is applied by the cord to the spool to vary the resistance of the machine. In one form the drive cord also forms a portion of the recoil mechanism as a continuous closed loop strap secured at its ends to different spools of a double spool. A continuous portion of the drive cord located between the handle and one spool is to secured to the handle.

  • Patent number: 4883268
Abstract: A rowing type exercise device which is conveniently usable by an exerciser seated in a wheelchair, or other chair-like structure, includes an elongated base structure having a floor supported use orientation in which its rear end extends rearwardly beneath the wheelchair. A force input lever is pivotally secured to a longitudinally intermediate portion of the base structure, and the outer end of the lever is provided with handgrips which may be grasped by the chair-seated exerciser to pivot the lever forwardly and rearwardly in a rowing motion which is resisted, in both directions, by an elongated piston and cylinder unit interconnected at its opposite ends to the lever and a front end of the device. The piston and cylinder unit connection location on the lever may be adjusted to selectively vary the lever resistance force. During use of the device, the user's feet are comfortably supported on longitudinally adjustable foot rest members connected to the base structure forwardly of the lever.

  • Patent number: 4878775
Abstract: A device provides liquid material for application to a surface. The device comprises in order at least a carrying substrate, frangible microcapsules containing the liguid to be applied, a raised area around the microcapsules of a structurally rigid material, and a flexible, liquid permeable material overlaying the microcapsules. • Patent number: 4875792
Abstract: A brush device adapted for grooming hair while distributing a substance to the hair or to a fabric while brushing, usually in a heated air environment. The brush body portion has an elongated cavity receiving a removable absorbent structure, which contains a grooming substance to be distributed such as in a vaporizable waxy semi-solid carrier material. The brush has a plurality of spaced transverse openings extending between the elongated cavity outwardly to the surface of the body and through which the vaporizable substance is distributed to the hair. Adjacent rows of bristles are provided firmly attached to the brush lower side in a zig-zag pattern between the spaced openings therein to facilitate lateral movement of hair strands during treatment. The distribution of the vaporizable substance from the brush cavity can be enhanced by heating the brush by using it in combination with a hot air hairdryer.

  • Patent number: 4869499
Abstract: A toe exercise device in a form of a dynamic splint is disclosed comprising a semi-circular plastic shell which has an adjustable holding strap attached to the bottom end thereof and fitted with Velcro such that the strap can be adjustably fitted above the ankle of the foot which is being exercised. At the upper or top end of the shell is secured an adjustable stretchable rubber tubing which has at its free end a toe sling or pouch. The plastic shell essentially comprises a brace member which is adapted to fit behind the leg. The toe sling is adapted to fit around the bottom portion of the toe and tends to pull the toe in a direction toward the leg. In this way, the user of the device can exercise his or her tendons which are situated in the vicinity of the toe located in the sling. This dynamic splint will also assist in obtaining passive extension at the metatarsal phalangeal joints.

  • Patent number: 4865313
Abstract: This invention relates to a running exerciser and in particular to one including a base frame on which there is fixedly mounted a motor. An endless belt is carried on a front rod and a rear rod in the base frame. A driving wheel with a conical surface is mounted on an axle of the motor. A driven wheel is installed at one end of the front rod and has a conical surface. Between the driving wheel and the driven wheel is a controlling conical disc provided with a frictional ring on the circumference thereof which partially contacts the conical surfaces of the driving wheel and the driven wheel. When the controlling disc is slightly moved towards or away from the driven wheel, the interconnection among the controlling conical disc and the driving and driven wheels will be changed thereby effectively increasing or decreasing the speed of the running exerciser.

  • Patent number: 4865480
Abstract: An applicator for dispensing metered amounts of medicaments in stick formulations is comprised of a hollow tube and a piston mounted to slidingly move within the tube. A finger operable base is rotatably mounted at one end of the tube and is mechanically linked by a screw member to the piston to urge the piston towards the other end of the tube. A depressible thumb piece is associated with the rotatable base. An extension or post is associated with the thumb piece to extend inward of the tube and to register with a race formed inside the tube. The race has a series of detents with which the extension may register upon rotation of the base. Registration between the extension and the detents signals certain increments of rotation or prevents further rotation of the base. The thumb piece is depressed inward to bring the extension out of registration with the detents.

  • Patent number: 4861022
Abstract: An exerciser primarily for chest muscles activated by pushing the handle ends of the device toward one another with the forearms, the hands playing an insignificant role in the use of the exerciser. It consists basically of a pair of levers rotatably secured to each other by a pivot pin joining the two levers near one pair of their ends, and elastic bands biasing the device in an open stance attitude, with the levers spread apart. Each elastic band has its pair of ends connected to the pair of levers, one end to the distal portion of a lever and the other end to the proximal or handle portion of the other lever. Forearm activation is provided for by mounting a pair of concave forearm cups near the handle ends of the levers, these cups being mounted adjacent the handle ends on the outside of the levers, with the concavity facing outward in each case. The user grips the exerciser with her forearms (in vertical position) and pushes her forearms together in the manner of closing the jaws of a vise.
