  • Patent number: 5832404
Abstract: A device for accurately detecting misfiring repetitively occurring in the opposing cylinders every 360.degree. CA. An angular velocity detecting means detects the angular velocity of rotation of the crankshaft for each cylinder at the time of combustion. A first rotational change calculation means calculates a first amount of change in the rotation by finding a deviation of angular velocity between the two cylinders of consecutive combustion strokes. A second rotational change calculation means calculates a second amount of change in the rotation by finding a deviation of angular velocity between the two cylinders 360.degree. CA before the moment at which the first rotational change calculation means has detected the angular velocity to calculate the first amount of change in the rotation.

  • Patent number: 5831155
Abstract: A test facility for realistically simulating selected operating conditions for a multi-mode aircraft propulsion system employs bypass ducting to rapidly introduce heated compressed air to a ramjet engine immediately following rocket booster operation. Heated compressed airflow from a suitable supply is initially utilized to ensure that incidental ducting, control elements, and instrumentation are stabilized in temperature, by bypassing the totality of the heated compressed airflow from a location close to the multi-mode propulsion system out to ambient atmosphere. Upon stable conditions being realized, the rocket thrust component of the propulsion system is actuated and selected physical parameters e.g., pressure, in the multi-mode propulsion system are measured. Upon certain criteria being fulfilled, inlet port covers are opened, allowing heated, compressed air to pass through to the ramjet engine, as well as continuing to bypass a reduced amount of air.

  • Patent number: 5831154
Abstract: A process for determining the quantity of a liquid situated in a largely closed system of a motor vehicle is provided. The filling level of the liquid in the system fluctuates as a function of the driving condition. In the case of a known process of this type for determining the engine oil quantity, the oil quantity determination takes place by filling level measurements while the vehicle is standing and the engine is switched off. The present process determines driving-condition-indicating quantities in the driving operation, determines therefrom the momentary driving condition, and, at least during selected driving conditions in the driving operation, continuously sense the filling level, as well as determines therefrom the momentary filling quantity via a given dependence of the liquid quantity on the driving condition and on the filling level. This permits, for example, a monitoring of the engine oil quantity in the continuous driving operation.

  • Patent number: 5832086
Abstract: In one embodiment of the present invention, an update method preference value (401) is determined as between a group update method and an individual update method for a wireless communication system (100). Also, a plurality of communication units are partitioned into at least one group, which at least one group is further partitioned into at least one subgroup (402). Once partitioned, a number of communication units in the at least one subgroup is determined (403) and, along with the update method preference value, is applied to a predetermined function to select an update method (404). The update method is used to update a communication unit parameter in communication units included in the at least one subgroup (405). Using this method, the update of communication unit parameters can be achieved automatically through the use of group and individual updates.

  • Patent number: 5831174
Abstract: A pump station flowmeter is disclosed including a pump status comparator for creating level status without being connected to any level sensors by comparing pump status to a list of association between expected pump status and levels. The wet well dimension, pump status signals, clock signals, level status are recorded in memory before being used as input to a flow calculator which calculates inflow and outflow. A flow rectifier readjusts the inflow and outflow according to a variable proportion of the difference between the average of many outflows and one outflow, and using this difference to readjust a variable tolerance and the variable position. This optimizes accuracy according to each specific installation. Abnormal pump operations are confirmed when a predetermined number of possible abnormal pump operations occur in a row are detected by comparing the outflow to the average of many outflows plus or minus the variable tolerance.

  • Patent number: 5828976
Abstract: It is intended to detect combustion state of an internal combustion engine over the entire range where positive torque is generated. Time required from a predetermined first crank angle to a second crank angle is measured by detecting a rotation angle of a ring gear or plate with engine speed detecting means 101. Then, a combustion state parameter is calculated from said required time by combustion state detecting means 102 with an established calculation method, and combustion state is determined by combustion state judging means 103. Engine speed correction means 104 determines and feeds back a correction value for the combustion state detecting value to correct the engine speed. At the moment, the correction quantity for correcting the required time is varied so that the normal combustion value of said combustion state parameter is at a predetermined value or less, or within a predetermined range.

  • Patent number: 5827975
Abstract: In the method a force F.sub.M is measured which has substantially the same magnitude over the pivotal range depending on the path of the warp and on the geometrical arrangement of the deflection member, of the tensioning member and of the pivot axis. The tension of the warp can thereby be substantially correctly determined independently of the position of the tensioning member by measurement of the force F.sub.M, and the measured value can be directly incorporated into the regulation of the warp let-off.

  • Patent number: 5827959
Abstract: A pressurized chemical tank is connected to a water line through a restriction (e.g., a gas flow control valve). A vacuum-regulating check valve is for maintaining the vacuum pressure of the gas flowing between the tank and the restriction. A gas flow rate sensor is between the restriction and the water line. The sensor is constructed to be responsive to pressure in the gas line, and can be connected to a remote display and/or storage device. The sensor can also provide a feedback signal to a control system for controlling the flow rate.

  • Patent number: 5828164
Abstract: A method is provided of preparing an impregnated cathode with enhanced thionic emission from a porous billet by impregnating the billed with a suitable impregnant in the presence of an oxygen deficient compound. Additives such as Ir, Os, and Rh react in such a way as to increase emission by reacting to generate oxygen deficient compounds such as WO.sub.2. Moreover, intermediate oxygen sufficient products formed in the chemical reactions can be used as impregnants providing they generate oxygen deficient compounds in the presence of the active emissive material.

  • Patent number: 5827977
Abstract: A system for measuring fluid flow in a conduit having a gradual bend or arc, and a straight section. The system includes pressure transducers, one or more disposed in the conduit on the outside of the arc, and one disposed in the conduit in a straight section thereof. The pressure transducers measure the pressure of fluid in the conduit at the locations of the pressure transducers and this information is used by a computational device to calculate fluid flow rate in the conduit. For multi-phase fluid, the density of the fluid is measured by another pair of pressure transducers, one of which is located in the conduit elevationally above the other. The computation device then uses the density measurement along with the fluid pressure measurements, to calculate fluid flow.

  • Patent number: 5824888
Abstract: For each process unit in a multi-process unit plant, a required input and output of a fluid (eg water), in terms of both purity and flow-rate of the fluid, is determined. All of the inputs and outputs of all of the process units are represented in a graphical or tabular form, in terms of both purity and flow-rate of the fluid. The efficiency of use of the fluid is then indicated by the graphical or tabular representation. Connections between the process units may be derived from the graphical or tabular representation, to increase re-use or re-generation of the fluid between the process units. Efficiency of use of the fluid in the multi-process unit plant may then be increased by effecting those connections between the process units.
