  • Patent number: 4758121
Abstract: A boring machine which is portable for field use and which is self-chucking and self-centering and has the capability of performing precision machining operations under computer control. The machining operations include pipe boring and internal threading. The boring machine has a chuck with relatively movable components including radially extendable blades for engagement with the interior of a pipe wall. A tool head is mounted for axial movement on a tubular drive shaft which is rotatably supported in cantilever fashion by the chuck. The actuation of the chuck and rotation of the drive shaft are derived from hydraulic means on the chuck within the interior of the pipe and connected to external fluid circuitry through stationary manifolds and fluid passages formed in the wall of the tubular drive shaft. The tool head is moved axially of the drive shaft by a lead screw rotatably driven by a servomotor and a tool slide is radially movable on the tool head by a second servomotor.

  • Patent number: 4741651
Abstract: An improved hole saw is disclosed. A mandrel of the hole saw forms an elongated threaded body. The mandrel, at a first end forms a shank adapted to be secured in the chuck of a hand power drill or drill press. The second end of the mandrel forms an enlarged, radially extended, circular flange having a recessed axially aligned hole formed therein. The shank end of, for example, a quarter inch pilot-hole drill is secured in the flanged end of the mandrel by one or more set screws. The mandrel is inserted, shank end first, into the open serrated cutting end of a cylindrically shaped hole saw. The threaded shank end of the mandrel is screwed into a threaded base of the hole saw, the radially extended flange of the mandrel being mated to and tightened against the inside base end of the hole saw.

  • Patent number: 4736957
Abstract: A stressing arrangement for workpieces of cylindrical or at least partially cylindrical shape including a housing which coaxially surrounds the workpiece. For the purpose of temporarily fixedly holding the workpiece for further working, in particular for machining, stressing means are mounted in the housing. The stressing means include a pair of stress pincers, each one of which consists of a plurality of segments, and a pair of pressuring rings. The stress pincers and pressure rings have confronting conical surfaces adapted to coact with each other so that when the pair of pressure rings move apart a radial inward stress is imparted on the workpiece by the stress pincers. A plurality of stressing bolts are threadably mounted in at least one of the pair of pressure rings to selectively cause them to move toward each other or apart from each other.

  • Patent number: 4725172
Abstract: Disclosed is an edged tool positioning device which is fixed to the quill of a machine tool for permitting the edged tool to reach a desired X- and Y-coordinate position on a workpiece and for permitting the edged tool thus put at the desired X- and Y-coordinate position to advance a desired distance in the thickness of the workpiece in the Z-direction. Every time the device is brought in contact with at least one selected side and upper surface of the workpiece, a warning unit built in the device informs a worker of the contact by the device with the workpiece, thus permitting him to find a start position and measure a desired distance in each direction.

  • Patent number: 4723359
Abstract: The system of the invention includes a downender station 10 which receives and secures a spent fuel assembly 20 in a vertical disposition and is then pivoted to a horizontal position after the upper nozzle has been removed, and a second station 12 generally aligned with the first station includes a multiple rod gripper 56 which is used to grip onto the exposed fuel rod ends and pull the fuel rods to an upper horizontal location in the second station, with horizontal and vertical combs 60 and 62 maintaining the original square pitch array of the rods, and the rods are then dropped into a reconfiguring structure 70 where they assume a more compact array, the rods then being pushed by pusher 74 into a storage canister 26 carried by the downender below the fuel assembly 20. The arrangement permits compacting fuel rods from two fuel assemblies into a storage canister 26 having approximately the same transverse cross-sectional area as a single fuel assembly.

  • Patent number: 4722643
Abstract: A tapping attachment particularly adapted for use with machines under numerical computer control. The attachment embodies tension cushion for the spindle by way of a tension spring as well as compression cushion for the spindle. The compression cushion is provided by way of an adjustable spring member which is in a bore of the spindle and which has a helical spring formed in it. The tension spring is on the inside of the compression spring member. The attachment as a whole is of relatively short overall length, adapting it for use in an automated system wherein attachments are automatically inserted in the machine and interchanged. The attachment embodies a hard start feature provided by way of releasable securement which will release the spindle for movement in response to predetermined axial force, so that in the case of a dull tap the automated movement of the attachment under computer control will be kept accurately programmed.

  • Patent number: 4720906
Abstract: A pair of fingers are operated by air cylinders at different rates in accordance with a given wiring function. In one function, one finger engages, supports and aligns an IDT at low pressure prior to insertion of the wire by the other finger at high pressure. The opening and closing of the fingers is also at high pressure. The closing of the fingers captivates the wire in alignment therewith as the tool travels from terminal to terminal. The wire is severed from the last terminal in the wiring sequence by an air operated knife. The tool is adapted to be connected to a robotic arm.

  • Patent number: 4718799
Abstract: The cutting tool comprises a cutting head and a holding shank and, for transferring the torque introduced on the cutting head during machining, faces are provided in a recess of the bearing surface of the holding shank on which engage the stop faces of the cutting head. A fixed connection between the cutting head and the holding shank is brought about by a threaded pin screwed into a tapped hole on the holding shank and which projects into a conical blind hole on the cutting head. As the torque is transferred in the vicinity of the bearing surface, the threaded pin is only loaded to the extent that there is a clearance-free connection between the cutting head and the holding shank.

  • Patent number: 4710071
Abstract: A two-speed gear box for handheld electric drills and the like has the movable parts associated with gear changing on or associated with a lay shaft. Gear changing is preferably effected by moving a pair of dogs, slidably mounted in holes through a lay shaft gear, to drivingly engage in either of two dog clutch members on the lay shaft. A thin flexible arm, preferably including a ring around the lay shaft, mounted in cantilever fashion from a movable base effects movement of the dogs. Should the dogs not be in proper register with a respective dog clutch member when changing speed, then the arm flexes and urges the dogs into driving engagement when proper register occurs. A family of two-speed drills having different specialized functions, e.g. a drill, a hammer drill, a screwdriver/drill, a screwdriver, etc., can be produced with the maximum parts in common enabling greater manufacturing flexibility and lower cost of manufacturing the family.

  • Patent number: 4708548
Abstract: A releasable coupling especially for quick inter-changeable tool mounting purposes comprises a socket member, e.g. for mounting in a machine tool drive spindle and a spigot shown of taper form and received by a corresponding socket in the socket member. The socket member has a driving engagement with the spigot and a shank of the latter may consist of or carry any one of a variety of tooling. A collar movable between locking and release positions about the socket member has internal cam formation acting on retaining elements such as balls in bores through the socket member which balls engage an annular groove about the spigot to retain it in the socket. Release movement of the collar enables the balls to radially retract for withdrawal of the spigot.
