  • Patent number: 4663823
Abstract: In a machine tool having a spindle supporting a work holder, means are provided for automatically operating the work holder to grip or release a workpiece and for automatically securing the work holder to the spindle or release it therefrom. Within the spindle, a compression spring acts on a slide which has claws gripping a head provided at one end of a holder housing to draw the latter into engagement with a conical socket of the spindle thereby to secure the holder. Within the holder housing, a compression spring urges a set of jaws into a conical socket of the housing thereby to grip a workpiece. A hydraulic actuator mounted on fixed structure is adapted both for opening the jaws and for releasing the holder from the spindle. For opening the jaws, a piston of the actuator is moved through an initial distance X thereby to move the jaws in opposition to the spring in the opening sense. The piston acts through the intermediary of a rod supported in the slide for free movement relative thereto.

  • Patent number: 4664570
Abstract: A method of working on a sloping surface of work is disclosed by means of a numerically controlled machine tool comprising a cutting tool carried by a spindle movable along three orthogonal axes, and a worktable rotatable both about its own axis and about another axis angularly displaced 45 degrees therefrom. The tool movements along the three axes and the worktable revolutions about the two axes are all controlled by a numerical control system, to which there are input prescribed data concerning the particular workpiece to be machined. The numerical control system is programmed to cause the machine tool to work, for example, on a conical surface or to drill one, two or more holes in preassigned positions on a sloping surface.

  • Patent number: 4664565
Abstract: The power tool has a magnetic base with superposed permanent magnet assemblies. The upper assembly can be moved relative to the lower assembly to subtract from or reinforce the magnetic field. When the sensing probe is pushed into the base the electric motor can be switched on to rotate a spindle on which a rotary cutting tool is axially mounted. The tool feed is controlled by a handle which can be mounted on either side of the tool housing. A coolant reservoir on the base has a hose connected to a pump which is connected to a manifold supplying coolant to the center of the cutting tool. The cutting tool is biased upwardly and pinches off the coolant when the tool is raised from the work.

  • Patent number: 4661029
Abstract: A quick disconnect coupling mechanism for a collet and collet tube facilitates connection and disconnection of the two members to and from one another. In a preferred form, the collet is provided with circumferentially spaced external threaded portions which are separated by unthreaded portions. The collet tube is provided with internally threaded, circumferentially spaced mating threaded portions which are separated by unthreaded portions. The collet tube can be quickly slipped over the collet, and located at a predetermined axial position thereon, and the two components can be rotated relative to one another to cause the threads to be moved into engagement with each other. The invention provides an indicator system for providing initial alignment of the collet tube with the collet. In a independently limits axial movement of the members relative to one another beyond a preset torque limit.

  • Patent number: 4659265
Abstract: The present invention relates to a tool radius compensation method for numerically controlled apparatus in which the coordinates Pi of the position of a tool center are computed which is offset a distance equal to the radius r of the tool in a direction normal to a surface to be cut based on commanded positional information P.sub.1, Pc and P.sub.2, for enabling the tool to three-dimensionally cut a workpiece. Based on the positional information P.sub.1, Pc and P.sub.2, a unit offset vector Vi is determined which lies on a plane defined by vectors U and V normal to first and second surfaces to be cut at a three-dimensional corner point Pc. Components along respective axes of the unit offset vector Vi are corrected so that the tool center will move smoothly along a curve contiguous to paths of movement of the tool center before and after the three-dimensional corner point Pc.

  • Patent number: 4657452
Abstract: Contouring of a stack of one or more circuit boards is effected by first partially cutting the contour, leaving a portion of the contour long enough to ensure the rigidity of the circuit with respect to the board. The circuit is then clamped, while the remaining portion is cut without any discontinuity in the cutting. The machine comprises an operating head and a workpiece pressing pad which is operated for clamping the circuit during the cutting of the remaining portion of the contour. The pad is movable with respect to the head in a direction parallel to the uncut portion of the contour for displacement at least equal to the length of such portion. After the cut, as the head is raised, the pad is returned to rest position by the camming action of a roller against a sloping edge.

  • Patent number: 4657445
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved core drill and a method of detachably coupling the same to a power driving unit to expedite the removal of a core therefrom. This is achieved by equipping the rear end of the drill stem with a fixedly attached externally threaded bushing. A coupling sleeve has internal threads at either end matable respectively with the bushing threads and the threaded drive shank of a power driving unit. This sleeve and the core drill are readily detached as a unit from the power drive thereby permitting the rapid removal of the core from the rear end of the drill rather than past the cutting ring at its front end.

  • Patent number: 4656723
Abstract: A method of forming a screw thread on one portion of a crankshaft and the like wherein the one portion of the shaft is worked on to provide thereto a diameter of a value greater than the value of the diameter of the one portion of the shaft before it is subjected to roll threading plus the value of the thickness of a hard, thin surface layer expected to be formed by carburizing on the whole of the shaft. Then, carburizing is performed to form the hard, thin surface layer on the whole of the shaft. Thereafter, the one portion of the shaft is subjected to grinding or machining to remove the hard, thin surface layer therefrom to reduce the diameter of the one portion of the shaft to a level conforming to the diameter thereof before roll threading is performed on the one portion of the shaft, and roll threading is performed on the one portion of the shaft from which the hard, thin surface layer is removed, to provide the shaft with a threaded portion.
