  • Patent number: 4969255
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for producing metallic heat exchanger tubes having a heat exchange surface that is increased by fins. A rotating tube has helically wound on its outer surface a strip that forms the fins, with this strip being fed to the tube surface under tension, and with the bottom edge of the strip being welded to the tube. The contact surface that exists between the tube and the bottom edge of the strip, and that extends helically on the surface of the tube, is fused exclusively at the surface of the tube with a laser beam that is directed in the region where the strip runs onto the surface of the tube, and that fuses a portion of the tube surface that in the axial direction of the tube corresponds at least to the width of the bottom edge of the strip and in the circumferential direction corresponds approximately to the same amount. At the same time, the laser beam fuses the bottom edge of the incoming strip in the region where the strip runs onto the surface of the tube.

  • Patent number: 4958421
Abstract: Venetian blind ladder means are provided in which first and second cross elements (4,5) of each cross connections of the ladder are located whereby the height of the projection of every pair of elements on a plane through the longitudinal side member axes ranges between zero and slightly larger than the depth of the blind slat material and the distance between the side members (3a,3b) of the ladder is only slightly greater than the slat width. During assembly, the ladder means are guided so that, at the location of interlacing, each consecutive interlacing opening is angled to extend in a plane perpendicular to the plane of slat feed or at an angle so that the projection of the mutual spacing between elements (4,5) in this perpendicular plant is sufficiently large to allow the advancing slat to be easily and rapidly fed therethrough.

  • Patent number: 4953290
Abstract: A method of securing in fluid tight relation the spaced ends of straight legs of heat exchange tubes of a U-shaped matrix to a tubular fluid conveying duct is effected by bending the spaced ends of the straight legs of the matrix to reduce the spacing between the ends of the tubes, thereafter loosely gathering the ends of the tubes to bring them into contact along their surfaces and then encircling the loosely gathered tube ends with frame elements which apply compression forces to the tube ends to deform then and cause them to come into contact with one another over substantially the entire surface areas thereof. The tube ends are then heated to braze them together and unite them with the frame elements as a unified block assembly. The block assembly is then inserted into an opening of conforming shape in the tubular fluid conveying duct and joined to the duct in sealed relation.

  • Patent number: 4951390
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for repairing turbine blades wherein the repair requires the input of considerable thermal energy during a welding or brazing operation for example. The method involves the step of pre-distorting the blade prior to the welding or brazing operation so that the distortion that is expected to occur during welding or brazing leaves the blade after repair in its proper position. A clamp means may be provided to prevent parts of an individual blade from being predistorted so as to localize the predistortion in the required area. A tool for predistorting the blade ensures that a physical force may be applied to a local area of the blade.

  • Patent number: 4951372
Abstract: A fuel injection valve and a method for adjusting its fuel quantity are proposed. The fuel injection valve is used to inject fuel into the intake system of a mixture-compressing internal combustion engine having externally supplied ignition. It has a valve needle, which when a magnetic coil is excited is attracted toward a core by an armature connected to the valve needle, whereupon the valve needle with a sealing seat formed on it, lifts away from a valve seat face embodied on a nozzle body. According to the invention, the nozzle body is closed off by a bottom embodied in the form of a small plate, which is part of the nozzle body and in which a plurality of calibrated injection ports are located. The closure of the valve needle is embodied by a tang, which extends as far as the immediate vicinity of the bottom. The injection ports are produced by erosion thereof, while their calibration for the sake of static fuel quantity adaptation is performed by hydraulic grinding with a flowable grinding medium.

  • Patent number: 4939920
Abstract: The monitoring device is constructed in such a way that the temperature measurement takes place directly at the bearing and there is no need for detaching connecting lines during changing of rolls. The main features of the monitoring device for roll bearings, installed, for example, in the chock (1) of the work roll (3) of a roll stand, reside in a thermal limit value pickup (6) in contact with the roll bearing (7), as well as in a mechanical, spring-loaded transmission member (8) locked in place in the chock (1) by way of the limit value pickup, for acting on a signal generator (9) arranged outside of the chock (1) in the roll stand, this signal generator being actuated to shut down the rolling mill by automatic outward movement of the transmission member (8) after releasing its locking device by the limit value pickup (6) upon reaching a limit temperature of the roll bearing (7). The monitoring device is preferably intended for use in thin-gage strip and foil rolling mills having high rolling speeds.

  • Patent number: 4937933
Abstract: In an apparatus for the introduction of a repair sleeve into a tube of a steam generator, difficulties are encountered if the axes of the repair sleeve and the steam generator tube are not aligned. Furthermore, problems are encountered in positioning the repair sleeve exactly in its end position. In order to achieve a precise centering and positioning of the repair sleeve, an aperture is formed by a connecting sleeve which is resiliently supported in the axial direction. The repair sleeve is clamped between a first shoulder of a holding grip and a centering piece which has a variable outside diameter. In such a structure, the greatest diameter of the shoulder surface is less than the inside diameter of the connecting sleeve. The holding grip is associated with a second shoulder having an axial distance from the first shoulder which is further away from the tube sheet than the first shoulder by the height of the connecting sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4938045
Abstract: The magnitude of forces which act upon the rolls in rolling mills can be ascertained by directly monitoring the extent of deformation of the rolls under the action of forces which are applied to the rolls in actual use of the rolling mill. The monitoring step includes measuring the extent of deformation of each roll at a plurality of different locations. The rolls are preferably made, at least in part of a high quality alloy known as X5 NiCrTi 25 15 which renders it possible to dispense with surface cooling of the rolls. The monitoring involves a determination of rolling force FN, of the horizontal component FH of rolling force, of the vertical component FS of rolling force, and of the angle gamma between the direction of action of the rolling force and the vertical.
