  • Patent number: 4455501
Abstract: In a precision rotation mechanism, first and second sections of a rotatable disk member are alternately rotated. The first and second sections are coupled together with an elastic hinge which is provided in the center region of the disk. The first and second sections are also coupled with piezoelectric elements. After the first section is locked by a stopper, the piezoelectric element is elongated in a direction and the piezoelectric element is contracted in a direction, whereby the second section is rotated in a direction. Then, the second section is locked by the stopper and the first section is released from the stopper. In this state, one piezoelectric element is contracted and the other piezoelectric element is elongated so that the first section is rotated.

  • Patent number: 4455498
Abstract: Means are disclosed for adjusting motor end play such that, despite variation from motor to motor in the distance between front and rear bearings on so-called skeleton motors, the end play can in all cases be brought to a minimum predetermined value. A lockwasher is positioned on the shaft by an arbor press that is referenced to a shoulder of the stator bearing assembly, thus compensating for length variations in stator manufacture.

  • Patent number: 4453099
Abstract: A submersible pump electrical motor has a rotor that is divided into sections, and a bearing located between each of the sections for maintaining the shaft of the rotor in axial alignment. The bearing assembly includes a sleeve that is keyed to the shaft. A bearing has an inner portion that rotatably receives the sleeve. The bearing has a flange with a periphery that frictionally engages the stator to prevent the bearing from rotating. The sleeve physically contacts the adjacent rotor sections and transmits forces between them. Washers are located between upper and lower edges of the bearing inner portion for supporting the bearing. The washers have inner diameters that receive the sleeve, and do not carry the weight of any rotor sections located above.

  • Patent number: 4451753
Abstract: A bulk wave piezoelectric device comprises a polarized ferroelectric ceramic plate, and electrodes formed on two main surfaces thereof, respectively, intersecting the polarization axis direction. The electrodes are connected to each other by means of an external resistance having a predetermined resistance value. The resistance value is selected to be smaller than the inherent resistance value of the ferroelectric ceramic plate between the two main surfaces. Positive and negative electric charges are stored on the two electrodes due to the pyroelectric effect responsive to a change of the temperature of the ferroelectric ceramic plate. The potential difference caused by the electric charges thus stored is rapidly decreased through the external resistance.

  • Patent number: 4450374
Abstract: Passivated and low scatter acoustic wave devices comprise surface acoustic wave (SAW) and shallow bulk acoustic wave (SBAW) devices having transducers composed of oxidizable metal and layers of metal oxide on conventional acoustic wave substrates. Passivated transducers are achieved by forming a layer of oxide on an existing transducer. The method may be used to passivate a device packaged in a non-oxidizable package with oxidizable wire leads, thus combining complete protection with efficient manufacturing operations. Low scatter SAW transducers are achieved by forming the transducer and the interstitial insulating layer from a single layer of oxidizable metal by means of masking and oxidation operations.

  • Patent number: 4449622
Abstract: An electromagnetic clutch is disposed between a drive source and a driven device for connecting and disconnecting the drive source to and from the driven device, respectively. The electromagnetic clutch includes a body rotatable by the rotative power from the drive source and an armature faced to, but normally spaced from the rotatable body. An exciting solenoid when energized moves the armature into an engaging position where the armature is attracted and urges against an end face of the rotatable body. A bearing is disposed between a fixed member of the driven device and the inner peripheral surface of the rotatable body for rotatably supporting the rotatable body on the fixed member. A cylindrical cover member is fixedly mounted, independently of the bearing, on a portion of the inner peripheral surface of the rotatable body between an axial end face thereof and the bearing.

  • Patent number: 4445056
Abstract: In an electric motor operating with a liquid filled housing, friction and hydraulic losses are reduced and heat removal is improved. A first collar is mounted on the end of the stator coaxially therewith. A second collar is positioned in proximity to the first collar. An annular plate extends from the second collar and faces the end of the rotor. The plate is spaced from the end of the rotor and from the rotor shaft. The rotor has a surface opposing the annular plate. The collars and annular plate form a liquid turbulence reducing shroud for the end of said rotor. The opposing surfaces of the annular plate and rotor move liquid outwardly toward the stator bore and the collars divert the liquid down the air gap for heat removal purposes. The first collar protects the end turns of the stator from abrasion by the moving liquid.

  • Patent number: 4442392
Abstract: To provide an indexed drive to a device such as a rotary switch having a detent mechanism, a three step-phase stepping motor is wound with only two of the phases (A, B) in its stator slots (S1-S24). Those slots (*) which would carry the third step-phase winding in a conventional machine are left empty. To index the drive from one detent position (I) to the next position (J), first the step-phase (A) and then the step-phase (B) are energized, to take the detent mechanism past its top dead center position (X). The drive then continues to the next position (J) under the detent force and its own inertia, while the step-phase (B) is kept energized to provide electrical retardation to prevent overshoot.
