  • Patent number: 4439582
Abstract: Blends of an aromatic polycarbonate, such as a polycarbonate of bisphenol-A, with a monovinylidene aromatic/carboxylic acid random copolymer, such as styrene/acrylic acid copolymer, exhibit improved impact strength and heat resistance. Such blends are particularly useful in the manufacture of molded parts which must be exposed to high temperature during manufacture and use. An example of a particularly desirable blend is a blend of a homopolycarbonate of bisphenol-A with styrene/acrylic acid copolymer and an acrylate resin containing grafted and nongrafted butadiene rubber and methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate random copolymer.

  • Patent number: 4436870
Abstract: Molding materials containing high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers are produced by a process in which a solution of a polyphenylene ether in an organic solvent, together with another polymer, is freed of solvent by multi-stage evaporation. The solvent is preferably an aromatic compound from the class comprising the hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, ethers or esters, the ratio of the other polymer to the polyphenylene ether is advantageously from 99:1 to 20:80 parts by weight, the other polymer is, in particular, a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene or of a homolog thereof, which may be modified with rubber, and the multi-stage evaporation process preferably comprises not less than two and not more than four working up stages. The evaporation is carried out in general at from 120.degree. to 280.degree. C. and under a pressure of from 1 to 3,000 mbar, advantageously in the presence of assistants which reduce the partial pressure, eg. water and/or methanol.

  • Patent number: 4433088
Abstract: Novel compositions are provided which comprise a polyphenylene ether, optionally a high impact polystyrene, optionally, an effective amount of an aromatic phosphate flame retardant, and a low molecular weight polymer selected from a polyolefin glycol or a polyamide, said composition being free from or excluding a substantial content of polyolefin, such as polyethylene. Such compositions when molded are readily paintable, and exhibit good adhesion between the paint and the molded compositions as distinguished from compositions containing polyolefins, such as polyethylene, which has been found to adversely affect paint adhesion. In addition, the novel compositions possess good or improved Izod and Gardner impact strengths, and in the case of polyolefin glycol, such as polyethylene glycol, the mutual solubility of all the components of the compositions is increased. Included within the disclosure of the invention are methods of preparing and molding such compositions and the molded products obtained therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4431772
Abstract: A latex of a highly crosslinked butadiene rubber polymer comprising not less than 50% of butadiene, 1.0 to 10% of a crosslinking agent and a remainder of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with butadiene, and having a particle size of 600 to 3,000 .ANG. and a degree of swelling of not greater than 7 is obtained by one or more stages of emulsion polymerization. By polymerizing 15 to 30 parts of a monomer mixture of an alkyl methacrylate, an aromatic vinyl monomer, and optionally a crosslinking agent and an unsaturated nitrile in the presence of 85 to 70 parts of the rubber polymer, a graft copolymer is obtained. A composition comprising 2 to 40% of this graft copolymer and 98 to 60% of a vinyl chloride resin possesses high impact resistance coupled with improved stress-whitening resistance, which properties cannot be easily obtained at the same time in conventional resin compositions.

  • Patent number: 4424299
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for manufacturing unsaturated polyester resins with suppressed volatilization of monomer, useful in the manufacture of laminates, moulding compounds, varnish coatings and castings. It is known a process for manufacturing unsaturated polyester resins by dissolving unsaturated polyesters in monomers with the addition of paraffin, waxes, ceresin wax, emulsifiers forming emulsions of the "water-in-oil" or "oil-in-water" type. These additives suppress the volatilization of monomers, but they exhibit a limited solubility in the resin and a majority of them separate on the surface during curing of the polyester resin and, thus, reduce the adhesion capacity of the subsequent layers of resin or laminates to the previously cured substrate. It has been found that unsaturated polyester resins with suppressed volatilization of monomer can be prepared by dissolving the unsaturated polyester in the monomer and by introducing 0.005-5.
