  • Patent number: 7549817
Abstract: A ring binder mechanism that retains loose-leaf pages and has ring members that readily lock together, preventing accidental loss of pages. The mechanism comprises a housing that supports two hinge plates for loose pivoting motion, bringing the ring members to either an open position or a closed position. The mechanism further comprises a control structure, which includes an actuating lever pivotally mounted on the housing. The actuating lever moves a travel bar and its locking elements for controlling the pivoting motion of the hinge plates. When the ring members are closed, the locking elements block the hinge plates from pivoting to open the ring members. In addition, a spring is attached to the travel bar for automatically biasing the travel bar and locking elements to the locked position when the ring members close.

  • Patent number: 7520793
Abstract: A manipulative toy is provided comprising a body and a plurality of interchangeable appendages, such as arms, legs, heads, tails and wings, removably attachable to the body at certain predefined coupling points using complementary magnetic elements disposed within both the appendages and the body. The appendages are retained in place by the interaction between two sets of complementary ribbed elements disposed on both the body and the appendages about the magnetic elements, which complementary ribbed elements are formed in a beveled configuration. The configuration of these ribbed elements, in combination with attractive force of the complementary magnetic elements and the frictional engagement of the complementary ribs, limits the appendages from moving rotationally about the point of attachment, and limits the movement of the appendage in the plane of the point of attachment, thereby allowing the manipulative toy to be posed by a user and retain its position.

  • Patent number: 7490860
Abstract: Improved lay-flat book products such as a book block (20) are provided which include a plurality of individual, marginally notched, alternating sheets (22, 24) having offset inner binding notches (30, 32); adhesive (36) is applied to essentially fill the notches (30, 32) in order to bind the sheets (22, 24) together. Preferably, tape (38) is applied to the spine surface (34) of the book block (20) and to adjacent portions of the outermost sheets thereof. Hard covers (48) and cloth binding (52) can also be added if desired. In a preferred method, a supply of marginally notched, unprinted A and B sheets (22, 24) are fabricated and the sheets may then be printed using digital equipment (e.g., programmable copiers) followed by adhesive binding. This permits economical production of short-run book products.

  • Patent number: 7491006
Abstract: A ring metal (10) has binder rings (12-16) each comprised of two ring segments one end of each of which is attached to a hinge plate (18, 20). A movable bar (34) extends from one end of the metal to the other and contacts the hinge plates to move them when the binder is opened. A manually operated trigger (32) connects to one end of the bar to move the bar. The trigger includes a slot (40) in which is fitted a pin (44) connected to the bar. The pin moves in the slot as the trigger is moved. Drawing the trigger away from a binder closed position toward a binder open position moves the pin through the slot. This causes the bar to move relative to the hinges, forcing the hinges to pivot the respective segments of each binder ring away from each other and open the binder. When the binder is closed, a nib (62) formed on the top of the bar is received in an opening in a shield (22) of the metal to prevent the trigger from being inadvertently moved and opening the binder.

  • Patent number: 7488000
Abstract: An adjustable book cover that includes a fabric panel with a hook-and-loop connecter system to maintain the panel in a selected size, and two endless resilient bands that maintain the panel in position on the book. The panel is folded to the correct size to fit the front and back covers of the book. The hook-and-loop connecter system maintains the panel in the corrected size. The panel is then wrapped around the exterior of the book so that the ends of the panels that include the resilient bands are tucked inside the front and back covers of the book. The resilient bands are then looped around the front and back covers of the book so that the panel is maintained in place on the book.
