Abstract: A process for the manufacture of butanedicarboxylic acid esters, wherein(a) an aqueous cobalt salt solution is treated, at from 50.degree. to 200.degree. C. and under a pressure of from 50 to 500 bars, with excess carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of active charcoal laden with cobalt carbonyl,(b) the resulting aqueous solution of cobalt carbonyl hydride is extracted with butadiene or with a hydrocarbon mixture containing butadiene and the aqueous phase is separated off,(c) the butadiene, or butadiene-hydrocarbon mixture, containing cobalt carbonyl hydride, cobalt carbonyl and butenyl-cobalt tricarbonyl is reacted with carbon monoxide and an excess of an alkanol of 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the presence of from 0.5 to 2 moles, per mole of butadiene, of a tertiary nitrogen base having a pK.sub.a of from 3 to 11, at from 80.degree. to 150.degree. C.

Abstract: Compounds containing peroxy linkages connecting similar polyol ester constituents are described. These peroxy di-ester polyols are prepared by the direct esterification of peroxy diacids with polyols, in the presence of a strong mineral acid catalyst. The peroxy di-ester polyol products function as free radical initiators and grafting bases in the graft copolymerization of unsaturated monomers with polyols. These graft copolymers are useful in the formulation of polyurethanes.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for converting a bis-(diol) terephthalate to dimethyl terephthalate, by interchange in a methanol medium in the presence of magnesium methylate as catalyst. In this way dimethyl terephthalate may be regenerated from scrap of polyterephthalate or copolyterephthalate filaments or films, for the purpose of manufacturing fresh polyterephthalates or copolyterephthalates which can then be used for the manufacture of, for example, filaments or films.

Abstract: Novel polyfunctional compounds and a novel process for their preparation are disclosed. These compounds may be converted into the acid or salt forms of cis and trans aconitic acids as well as into a racemic mixture of isocitric acid, alloisocitric acid and the lactones of isocitric acid and alloisocitric acid and their salts. All of the acid and salt forms produced are useful as metal sequestrants and/or detergent builders. The novel polyfunctional compounds can also be saponified to their corresponding alkali metal salts which, in turn, are also metal ion sequestering agents and detergent builders. The polyfunctional compounds are the reaction products obtained from the reaction of selected salts of monoalkyl esters of maleic acid with selected active hydrogen containing compounds.
