  • Patent number: 5676893
Abstract: Automatic thickness profiling for use in blown film and other extrusion lines. The automatic system is integrated into an air cooling ring device either external and/or internal to the bubble or extrusion. The system has or more high resolution circumferentially variable annular air outlets which act to cool the molten resin in a circumferentially variable way. Thin slide plates remain fixed in place except when adjusted to open or close the local annular air outlet by the action of at least one scanning actuator. The actuator is positioned by control signals generated by a control computer which calculates the appropriate local dimension of the variable air outlet in response to circumferential position correlated with thickness variations detected by a film thickness sensor. The film thickness above the frost line is mechanically scanned around the extrusion.

  • Patent number: 5658513
Abstract: A cross-head die for the manufacture of long fiber-reinforced resin structures enhances fiber loosening and resin melt impregnation of fiber bundle near its inlet. A passageway along which the fiber bundle travels is defined between the die inlet and outlet and is in communication with a resin port to allow a resin melt to be introduced thereinto so as to impregnate the traveling fiber bundle. The passageway meanders relative to the common plane so as to establish a plurality of alternating successive peak and valley portions each having a substantially constant pitch dimension as measured at adjacent crossing points of the passageway with the common plane. A first peak or valley portion adjacent to the inlet has a greater height dimension as measured from the common plane as compared to a last peak or valley portion adjacent the outlet.

The pelletizer includes a rotor disposed inside the housing and knives mounted around the periphery of the rotor. The knives pelletize the melt-extrudate as the rotor rotates. A fluid supply system selectively delivers a fluid, such as air, to the knives when the knives are at a selected location in the housing. The selected location is preferably just past the inlet and can extend in a circumferential direction around the housing in the area of the housing which is near the outlet. The circumferential extent can vary according to the configuration of the knives and the fluid supply system.
