  • Patent number: 4873061
Abstract: Mixtures of reactant gases containing nitrogen ar reacted by being raised to very high temperatures at the focal plane of a solar concentrator when radiant energy is absorbed by a metal screen or other porous material in contact with the reactants at the focal plane of a solar concentrator and the resulting products of combined nitrogen are rapidly cooled in a unique heat transfer unit which rapidly transfers the heat of the product gases to the reactant gases and the rapid cooling of the product fixes the high temperature equilibrium proportions to achieve larger proportions of product than would be possible by gradual cooling.

  • Patent number: 4867908
Abstract: A method for calibrating an instrument for using that instrument to obtain at least one light-related signal from particles under analysis comprises directing an incident beam of light at calibration particles having one or more known characteristics related to the particles expected to be analyzed. Both a light signal and a noise signal from the calibration particles are detected. A measurement is made of the ratio of the detected light signal to the detected noise signal, and that measurement is reported. The measured ratio is then compared to a predetermined ratio which represents a threshold for minimum instrument performance. This method further includes adjusting, if the predetermined ratio has not been attained, the operation of the instrument, while the calibration particles are within the incident beam of light, until the measured ratio reaches the predetermined ratio whereby the instrument is calibrated for subsequently obtaining the light signal from particles to be analyzed.

  • Patent number: 4865129
Abstract: A new and improved composition and method for profile modification of subterranean formations characterized by high reservoir temperatures and/or harsh brine conditions are disclosed. The new and improved profile modification agents comprise a gelable composition comprising:(a) water;(b) a water-thickening and crosslinkable amount of a water-dispersible copolymer comprising from about 1 to about 99 mol % of units derived from an N,N.sup.1 -dialkylacrylamide monomer copolymerized with from about 1 to about 99 mol % of units derived from acrylic acid or a salt thereof; and(c) an amount of a polyvalent metal sufficient to crosslink the copolymer to form a stable gel. The profile modification agents are effective to alter the permeability of preselected portions of an underground formation by forming strong gels which are stable in harsh brine at temperatures of up to about 120.degree. • Patent number: 4863804
Abstract: Superconductor wire, and methods of constructing same, including one or more filaments formed of submicron-particle superconductor powder each surrounded by an encapsulating sheath having a composite wall. The composite wall includes a ductile outer skin surrounding a relatively harder, higher yield strength inner wall portion. The harder, higher strength inner wall portion improves dimensional uniformity of the filaments as the wire is fabricated, with the potential for enhanced superconducting performance, while the ductile outer skin enhances metallurgical bonding between the outer skins of adjacent filaments, to ensure a homogenous, thermally conductive and normally electrically conductive matrix.

  • Patent number: H671
Abstract: Thermoplastic parts are formed by a process that produces at least one surface that is a direct replication of the mold surface without secondary operations, e.g., a "Class A" surface. The process is particularly suitable for the production of large parts such as automobile panels, refrigerator panels and the like especially those employing a high-viscosity resin and particularly those parts made by blow-molding. The process comprises pressing at a selected pressure a plastic preform heated above the glass transition temperature (Tg) against a suitably smooth or detailed mold surface held at a temperature below the Tg of the resin; raising, preferably rapidly, the mold to a temperature above Tg for the time necessary to raise above Tg a depth of resin sufficient to remove surface imperfections, die lines, and pores, and fill voids, and substantially embed included matter; and rapidly cooling the mold until the molded part is below Tg when pressure may be released and the mold opened.

  • Patent number: H676
Abstract: A process for producing urea fluorosilicate, [(NH.sub.2).sub.2 CO].sub.4 .multidot.H.sub.2 SiF.sub.6, a composition eminently suitable for use as a fungicide in the prevention and control of wheat stem rust. The method involves mixing urea and fluorosilicic acid derived from by-product fluorine in a mole ratio of urea:fluorosilicate acid in the range from about 3.5:1 to about 4.5:1 and thereafter dewatering the resulting solution to produce a concentrated solution of urea fluorosilicate. Solid urea fluorosilicate is subsequently obtained by evaporation of the remaining water which is conveniently effected by introducing the resulting solution or melt to concentrator means, or alternatively into a heated, moving bed of preformed granular urea fluorosilicate.
