Patent number: 8407154Abstract: A shipment origin location for a product purchased by a customer is predicted. A merchant evaluator receives information from a user about a purchase transaction completed by the user with a merchant for a product, including the user's location. When the product is shipped, the merchant evaluator receives tracking information about the shipment. The merchant evaluator determines from the tracking information a point of origin for the shipment and updates its records to reflect the shipment origin point for that merchant and product, given the user's location. As the merchant evaluator compiles similar data for many products shipped by many merchants to many destinations, the merchant evaluator develops a searchable index, enabling a prediction to be made about a shipment origin point for a particular product from a particular merchant, given the location of the user ordering the product. A time-in-transit prediction can also be made.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2012Date of Patent: March 26, 2013Assignee: Google Inc.Inventor: Thomas Mackenzie Fallows

Patent number: 8386397Abstract: Various embodiments of a system and method for constraint-based reduction of a solution space for vehicle routing are described. Embodiments may include a system configured to identify sets of redundant routes within a solution space. For each given set of redundant routes, the system may utilize one or more constraints associated with conveying shipments on routes of the given set in order to eliminate one or more routes of that set from consideration. For each of multiple routes of the given set that have not been eliminated from consideration, the system may determine a respective cost associated with utilizing that route. The system may also, in response to determining that the cost associated with a particular route that has not been eliminated from consideration is less than the cost associated with other routes that have not been eliminated from consideration, add the particular route to a reduced solution space.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2010Date of Patent: February 26, 2013Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Richa Agarwal, Lin Wan, Jingqiao Zhang, Pradeep Desai, Karthik Balasubramanian, Michael Mahesh Bhaskaran, Girish S. Patent number: 8285571Abstract: A rideshare system and associated methodology for recommending rideshares to prospective riders and drivers uses itineraries and personal affinities to make the recommendations. The rideshare system computes a cost value by comparing the search criteria submitted by a user to stored user profiles. Results of the comparison are displayed in order of highest match to lowest match, according to the cost values computed. Further, the system also adaptively updates the stored profiles according to rideshare history. Lastly, the system includes a real-time user localization unit to locate prospective riders and drivers in real time, making just in time or unplanned rideshares possible.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2009Date of Patent: October 9, 2012Assignee: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America (Tema)Inventors: David Demirdjian, Steven F. Patent number: 8265987Abstract: A road-vehicle communication system warns or gives caution to a vehicle traveling in a reverse way direction and may also give warning to vehicles traveling in a correct direction. The road-vehicle communication system includes a first roadside apparatus at an entrance gate that gives entry gate pass information indicating that a vehicle passing a communicative area has entered a toll road. A second roadside apparatus at an exit ramp acquires any given entry gate pass information from a passing vehicle. An administration device judges whether or not the entry gate pass information is acquired from the passing vehicle. If the entry gate pass information is not acquired, the second roadside apparatus provides the vehicle with reverse-way driving warning information for warning the vehicle that the vehicle is traveling in the reverse direction.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2008Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha KenwoodInventor: Souju Goto

Patent number: 8260650Abstract: Methods for scheduling a transportation operation such as the operation of an airline. The method desirably selects a demand (100) for transportation specifying an origin, destination, and time of arrival or departure, and selects resources from a database of available resources such as aircraft (508), crew, and departure gates. The resource selection desirably is conducted so as to optimize a result function such as contribution to margin or other financial result from the particular operation specified in the demand. Upon developing a schedule fragment (108), the specified resources are committed, and the database of available resources is modified (110) to indicate that the resources are no longer available at the relevant times. The system then treats another demand and repeats the process so as to develop a full schedule. The system can develop a feasible schedule, even for a complex transportation operation in a brief time, typically in minutes or less.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2007Date of Patent: September 4, 2012Assignee: Intelligent IP Corp.Inventor: H.
