  • Patent number: 8360105
Abstract: The air admittance vent (“AAV”) includes a cup shaped vent body and a vertically reciprocating valve element that seats against a valve seat that has two separate contact areas defined by an annular ridge and a conical face formed in the bottom of the vent body. When the valve element moves into its closed position, the pliable diaphragm of the valve element initially contacts the annular ridge, which forms a first part of the valve seat before moving fully into sealing contact with the conical face, which forms the second part of the valve seat. The contact with the annular ridge provides a first initial seal before the diaphragm nests into contact with the conical face to form a second seal with the valve seat.

  • Patent number: 8342202
Abstract: A pipe coupling member for high-pressure fluid such as liquefied hydrogen includes a seal ring having a highly effective sealing function to prevent leakage of the fluid. The seal ring (72) is set in a seal ring setting space (39) defined by a second radial surface (36) and a seal ring setting surface (38) of a first tubular member (20), a forward end surface of a second tubular member (22), and the outer peripheral surface of a valve seat member (24). A forward end portion of the second tubular member (22) is provided with a communication hole (84) radially penetrating the forward end portion. The pressure of the high-pressure fluid on the downstream side of a valve seat surface (52) causes a fluid path in the second tubular member to be communicated with the sealing ring setting space (39) via the communication hole (84) and via a gap between the seal ring setting surface (38) and the outer peripheral surface of the forward end portion of the second tubular member.

  • Patent number: 8333212
Abstract: A reverse acting rupture disc and methods of forming the same are provided. Generally, the rupture disc comprises a bulged portion and a circumscribing flange area surrounding the bulged portion. The bulged portion includes a mechanically formed line-of-opening recess comprising a singular channel. In certain embodiments, the mechanical process by which the recess is formed utilizes a high-speed mill which removes a portion of metal from the bulged portion of the disc without disrupting the substantially uniform metallic grain structure of the metal adjacent the channel.

  • Patent number: 8322378
Abstract: A check valve for one-way flow of a fluid comprises a valve body defining at least two pairs of axially-extending sidewalls, each pair of sidewalls having a pair of resilient lips defining slit opening at the outlet end of the valve. In one embodiment of the invention, the valve body defines three pairs of sidewalls and corresponding lips which are arranged one another so as to provide the check valve with an “I-beam” cross-sectional shape. The I-beam check valve has a compact cross-section, making it suitable for mounting either inside or outside a pipe. The I-beam shape provides support along the valve axis so that the valve does not require any supplemental support structure. In another embodiment, the valve body may define two pairs of sidewalls having a “T-shaped” transverse cross section.

  • Patent number: 8316890
Abstract: A port closure system (20) including a port structure (22), and a valve (24). The port structure (22) includes a port (28) for establishing communication between an exterior environment (30) and interior volume (32) that can receive a fluent substance. The valve (24) includes a flexible, resilient, self-closing, slit-type valve head (36) with an orifice that is normally closed in an unconstrained condition. The port (28) has a laterally inwardly facing engaging surface (34) and the valve has a laterally outwardly facing peripheral surface (54) that is compressed laterally inwardly by engagement with the surface (34) to increase the resistance of the normally closed orifice to opening when the head (36) is subjected to a pressure differential.

  • Patent number: 8302623
Abstract: An cylindrical hollow anti-backflow insert that can rapidly retrofit a fire hydrant to prevent a forced liquid inflow into the fire hydrant after simple insertion of the insert into the outflow nozzles of a fire hydrant. A curved anti-backflow flap having a hinge at one end and an inflow fin at an opposite end is positioned within the insert. Outflow of water from the fire hydrant will cause the flap to rotate upwards, at which point the inflow fin protrudes into the interior of the insert sufficiently to catch any forced liquid inflow stream which will force the flap downward towards a curved flap seal. The curved flap seal reversibly engages the perimeter of the flap, thereby reversibly closing the rear end of the insert and preventing the forced inflow of liquid into the fire hydrant.

  • Patent number: 8291933
Abstract: A hand piece for a surgical instrument is provided. The handpiece has an inlet, a chamber (with upstream and downstream portions), a flow control member, a pulse engine, and an outlet. The inlet communicates with the upstream portion of the chamber. The downstream portion of the chamber communicates with the engine. The engine communicates with the outlet. In a closed position of the member, flow from the inlet moves the member to the open position thereby allowing flow through the flow path. In the open position, pulses from the engine move the member to the closed position before pulses from the pulse engine can flow through the flow path, thereby preventing flow through the flow path.

  • Patent number: 8286656
Abstract: A hollow tubular element is inserted in the descending aorta. The caudad end contains a pressure sensitive passive or preferably, hydraulically or electrically activated, unidirectional valve. A flexible diaphragm situated in a rigid shell affixed over an opening in the element wall divides the shell interior into first and second variable volume chambers. The first chamber opens to the artery. A continuously operating electrical pump is connected to the second chamber through a closed hydraulic system including a multi-valve chamber. The valves regulate fluid flow to the second chamber in accordance with electrical signals from the heart. Fluid flow is directed to the second chamber during cardiac diastole and away from the second chamber during cardiac systole, causing the device to function in a counterpulsation mode. The work of the heart is decreased and coronary blood flow is increased to promote the formation of new coronary collateral channels and the perfusion of the heart itself.
