  • Patent number: 5545103
Abstract: A vehicle drive train transfer case includes a differential with an input and two outputs, a normally disengaged electromagnetic first clutch, and a normally engaged second clutch adapted to be electromagnetically disengaged. When the first and second clutches are disengaged and engaged, respectively, torque is transmitted via the differential to the rear axle of the vehicle without torque being transmitted to the front axles so as to propel the vehicle in a two-wheel drive mode. When both clutches are engaged, the differential is locked so as to cause torque to be transmitted to both the front and rear axles and effect propelling of the vehicle in a conventional four-wheel drive mode. When the first and second clutches are engaged and disengaged, respectively, the differential is unlocked to enable torque to be transmitted to both the front and rear axles in an all-wheel drive mode.

  • Patent number: 5544538
Abstract: A vehicular automatic transmission (AT) hydraulic controller has an integrated valve. The integrated valve has a cylindrical cam shaft including convex and concave parts on the outer periphery thereof, and the integrated valve is connected to a motor for automatic control and a connecting part which is interlocked with an external gearshift operated by a driver. Hydraulic control of the integrated valve can be performed in two different ways, i.e., automatic control and manual control, and even if automatic control malfunctions due to an error, manual control can maintain the control of the AT and avoid any inconvenience. The structure of this integrated valve provides a high degree of design freedom and can implement a wide variety of AT functions. Accordingly, a light, compact and reliable AT equipped with both an automatic control mechanism and a manual control mechanism can be provided.

  • Patent number: 5537885
Abstract: A gear shift mechanism particularly suited for a drag racing car is disclosed that causes the gear shifts of a transmission to be sequenced upon the attainment of selectable predetermined conditions so that the drag racing car obtains its desired acceleration in an optimum manner. The gear shift mechanism comprises electrically or pneumatically operated cylinders that move the gear shift lever upon sensing optimum conditions related to the acceleration performance of the drag racing car. The cylinders are positioned on opposite sides of the gear shift lever and provide counter-forces during shifting through at least one gear and yet allow the gear shifting to preferably be accomplished in a single direction. The counter-acting cylinders eliminate overshooting of the gear shift lever during movement of the lever arm. Alternatively, manual input instead of predetermined conditions may be substituted into the gear shift mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5537894
Abstract: A control system/method for an automated transmission system including a splitter-type, semi-blocked mechanical transmission (12) is provided. The control provides a technique for sensing auxiliary section engagement faults or auxiliary section and main section engagement faults and for operation in a fault-tolerant mode upon sensing such faults. In one embodiment, auxiliary section (214) engagement faults are sensed when the main section (212) is confirmed as engaged in an appropriate ratio and the transmission is confirmed as engaged in a ratio (GR.sub.N) other than the target ratio (GR.sub.T). In another embodiment, engagement faults are sensed when one section is confirmed as properly engaged and the transmission does not achieve engagement in a target ratio after a preset period of time.

  • Patent number: 5531304
Abstract: Upon detection of execution of operation for stopping a vehicle during its running state and of a drop in an actual speed ratio below a predetermined value, the actual speed ratio being the actual ratio of the revolution speed of an output shaft to the revolution speed of a power source, a feedback amount is determined, setting the integral component of the difference between a target motor speed ratio and an actual motor speed ratio to zero. Based on the feedback amount thus determined, an operation amount for controlling the angle of a swash plate is computed. With this amount, the angle of the swash plate is controlled.

  • Patent number: 5524509
Abstract: An improved differential mechanism of the holdout ring type, characterized by the provision of a pair of annular thrust blocks engaged by sets of Belleville disc-spring washers which bias a pair of side gears axially outwardly apart against a pair of annular thrust washers, respectively, non-rotatably supported by the differential housing. By loading the side gears in the axial direction, the side gear radial freedom of movement is restricted, whereby the differential chatter and noise level during operation are significantly reduced.

  • Patent number: 5520591
Abstract: A method of converting a three-speed transmission to a two-speed transmission comprises the step of replacing a plurality of steel drive discs and a plurality of friction driven discs of a multiple disc clutch with a clutch bypass. Each of the replaced plurality of steel drive discs have teeth on an outer perimeter. Similarly, each of the replaced plurality of friction driven discs have teeth on an inner perimeter. The clutch bypass, which replaces these discs, has outer teeth on an outer perimeter which match the teeth of the plurality of steel drive discs, and has inner teeth on an inner perimeter which match the teeth of the plurality of friction driven discs. The transmission is convened from a three speed transmission to a two speed transmission by eliminating first speed, so that the transmission upshifts directly from neutral to second speed. First speed is eliminated by making the transmission operate in first speed as if it were in second speed.

  • Patent number: 5512021
Abstract: A variable ratio transmission for an engine. The transmission comprises a planetary gear system having a planet ring with a plurality of planet gears rotatably connected thereto. The planetary gear system also comprises an outer drum gear and an inner sun gear. There is also a mechanism for providing a variable force against the drum gear so that the sun gear is driven by the engine with a variable ratio. The planet ring acts as an input driven by the engine and the sun gear acts as an output, such as to wheels. It should be appreciated that the input, output and providing mechanism, against the remaining gear, can be interchanged in a variety of ways to achieve the intended result of a variable transmission. Preferably, the providing mechanism provides a continuous variable force against the drum gear so that the transmission can provide a continuous variable ratio output. Thus the transmission can have an infinite number of gears ratios.

  • Patent number: 5509860
Abstract: The invention relates to hydraulically engaged by means of two friction clutches (9 and 10). For that purpose, friction elements (outer and inner disks 13, 14 and 19, 20) are alternatively engaged and disengaged by the force exerted by plate springs (16, 22) or by hydraulic fluid. A mechanism associated with one of the friction clutches (9 or 10) prevents the full force of the spring from acting on the friction elements when the gear is shifted down from a higher to a lower step. An accumulator (30) is preferably used to influence the torque transmission during a downshift. An essential advantage of the disengaged arrangement consists in the smoothness of the shifting operation during downshifts, avoiding a particularly disagreeable hard shifting which is otherwise felt.
