  • Patent number: 5709514
Abstract: A liveload assembly for communicating a load to packing material through a flange member of a fluid flow apparatus while pre-stressing a stud holding the flange member with a different loading, in which a first set of compressible belleville washers are received on an open-ended sleeve of a stack guide and rest on a seat defined by a flange at one end of the sleeve, the stack guide and washers received into a recess of a retainer cup having a partially closed end which defines a threaded bore for threadingly engaging the retainer cup to a stud extending from the stuffing box and freely through a gland follower, whereby the first set of belleville washers, being compressed, communicate a load through the flange member to the packing material. A second set of belleville washers are received on the stud and rest on a beveled face of the retainer cap. A nut screwed onto the stud compresses the second set of belleville washers against the beveled face of the retainer cup for pre-stressing the stud.

  • Patent number: 5707191
Abstract: A stress plate for use with a threaded fastener for securing relatively soft insulation to a solid base, such as in a roofing environment, includes a generally planar main body, and a hole on the main body configured for receiving the fastener. The plate is configured so that the hole is angled relative to a vertical axis of the plate for accommodating threads of the fastener so that the fastener is maintained in a generally perpendicular orientation to the main body upon the engagement of the threads of the fastener in the hole. In the preferred embodiment, the threads of the fastener have a helix angle, and the hole, which is formed in a conical depression in the plate, is angled at the same angle as the threads of the fastener.

  • Patent number: 5704751
Abstract: A V-nail fastener has a leading edge that is partially formed with asymmetric sharpening, limited substantially to the central sections. Flange elements extend generally perpendicularly to the panel elements of which the central (V-shaped) portion is constructed and cooperate therewith to give the fastener a W-shaped overall profile. The lateral sections of the leading edge, which extend along the flange elements, are substantially devoid of sharpening, or are otherwise so formed as to permit the directional influence of the asymmetric sharpening to occur substantially undiminished.

  • Patent number: 5702135
Abstract: A carton closure apparatus releasably and securely closes a carton having a rectangular bottom, four side walls, two minor top flaps connected to the shorter two walls, and two major top flaps connected to the longer two walls. The apparatus has two parts. The first part is an insert that has a planar surface and a latching member that extends away from and at a right angle to the planar surface. The second part is a socket that has a receiving member for releasably and securely engaging the latching member of the insert. The socket is attached to one of the shorter side walls of the carton at a point along the top edge and equidistant from the adjoining side walls. • Patent number: 5700119
Abstract: A nail with spreadable legs has legs that can be spread apart by a constant angle irrespective of the hardness of the ALC material into which the nail is driven. The nail has two leg members bound together by a washer with their flat sides abutting each other. One of the leg members has a protrusion on its respective flat surface near its tip. A projection and a recess are formed on the flat surfaces of the respective leg members. With the leg members bound by the washer, the projection engages in the recess near the washer. When the nail is driven in to a predetermined depth, the projection disengages from the recess, so that the legs begin to spread apart. It is thus possible to control the spread angle of the leg members.

  • Patent number: 5700120
Abstract: A threaded fastener and a method by which the fastener exhibits sufficiently enhanced fatigue strength so as to be suitable for use in gas compressors and turbines operating at relatively high service temperatures. The method entails a selective heat treatment to achieve a dramatic improvement in fatigue properties while not interfering with other required properties for the fastener. The heat treatment process preferentially develops a case-hardened region in those threads nearest a transition region between the threads and an unthreaded portion of the fastener. In contrast, the unthreaded portion and the threads furthest from the transition region need not be case-hardened. The hardening pattern in the threads yields a martensitic steel fastener that exhibits fatigue properties which are dramatically superior to otherwise identical fasteners.

  • Patent number: 5697744
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for joining a plastic insert or component to a plastic base having a recess therein. The component is provided with integral projections thereon that are separated from one another by spaces. The component is inserted into the recess with the projections force-fitted against the plastic base. The plastic of projections is caused to flow into the spaces, and the plastic of the base is caused to flow into the spaces where the plastics are intermixed. Then, the flowed, intermixed plastics are brought back into a solid condition with spaces now filled with solid, intermixed plastics that interlock the components to the base against rotation relative to one another and to prevent them from being pulled apart. The preferred projections are spaced in rows and have inclined sidewalls extending outwardly to small, cross-sectional, free ends for rapidly melting and flowing into the spaces.

  • Patent number: 5695306
Abstract: A connection apparatus utilizes a structural element made of fusible material supported directly in the connection load path of the device. A carrier mechanism is axially translatably supported in the device and utilizes a connecting member to connect two desired structures. The connection mechanism engages and holds the connecting member in a first axial position. In one embodiment, the connection mechanism releases the connecting member when translated to a second axial position. In another embodiment the connection mechanism tensions the connection when translated to the a second axial position. The fusible member is heated to transition from solid to liquid. In the liquid state, the fusible member no longer opposed axial load on the carrier mechanism. The fusible alloy comprises a low melting temperature alloy, such as bismuth-lead or bismuth-tin.

  • Patent number: 5692863
Abstract: A self-locking internally threaded nut has a deltoid shaped locking section having circumferentially spaced protrusions. The protrusions form a surface adapted to be engaged by a deltoid driver which tightens the nut onto a bolt to a predetermined axial load. At the predetermined load the protrusions are plastically deformed inwardly on the nut so that the driver rotates freely on the nut. When the protrusions are inwardly deformed, the deformed material impinges on the bolt, thereby rotationally locking the nut on the bolt.
