Patent number: 5305529Abstract: An adapter for use with a circular-type saw for controllably making incisions in a tubular member comprising a base having an elongated slot therein, means for attaching the base to the saw in such a manner that the slot receives a portion of the blade of the saw, and means for removably mounting the saw upon the tubular member in the area of the intended incision. The base has a top and bottom surface and is attached to the saw in such a manner that the top surface of the base faces the saw. The mounting means is attached to and projects from the bottom surface of base. The mounting means has first and second perpendicularly intersecting, substantially V-shaped channels. The second V-shaped channel substantially overlaps the slot. The portion of the saw blade received by the slot is operative within the slot and the second V-shaped channel.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1993Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Assignee: Capewell Components CompanyInventor: Andrew J. Patent number: 5305527Abstract: Apparatus and method for peeling the husk from produce such as garlic cloves in which cup means are provided with circumferentially spaced, inwardly biased prongs that converge toward an exit end, the prongs having gripping members adjacent the exit end. A plunger is provided for pushing the garlic meat relative to the husk while the husk is being held by the gripping members. In the method, the husk is held and gripped at the circumferentially spaced locations while the meat is pressed axially of the husk relative to the husk while the husk is being gripped. Preferably, the husk is simultaneously scored or cut as it is gripped to split the husk.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1993Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Assignee: Chef 'N CorporationInventor: David A. Patent number: 5301431Abstract: A hand-held cutting tool can make repeated precision cuts into hard materials after being repeatedly exposed to highly corrosive and oxidizing conditions. The cutting tool comprises a pair of interactive stainless steel complementary members, each member having a handle portion at one end and a cutting portion at the other end. The cutting portion comprises a hardened tool-steel insert forming the tool's cutting edge. The surface of each member is hard chrome plated except for the hardened tool-steel cutting edge. Each member comprises a recessed portion of complementary size and configuration to accommodate interaction between the members. A washer resides between each member to accommodate unwanted space and a screw is used to hingedly join each member together so that the cutting edges are aligned in an opposed fashion directed toward each other. Patent number: 5297341Abstract: A locking knife and sheath combination having a knife of unitary construction. A flexible engagement tab is provided on the handle of the knife for engaging with a tab receiving opening provided in a front portion of the sheath. Upon engagement of the tab with such opening, the knife is securely retained in the sheath. Removal of the knife from the sheath is accomplished by depression of the tab through the tab opening of the sheath. Sheath clamping means are also provided on the opposite side of the sheath and include a clamping arm which pivots with respect to the rearward surface of the sheath through means of rotation of a thumb wheel adjustment member. Rotation of the adjustment member allows for the clamping arm to selectively clamp the sheath to an article.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1993Date of Patent: March 29, 1994Inventor: Walter W. Collins

Patent number: 5293690Abstract: In a folding knife or hand tool having a handle and a blade pivotally connected to the handle, a spring loaded crossbolt 1 is fitted to the blade tang. One end of crossbolt 1 protrudes through an arcuate slot in the handle, crossbolt slot 32. A locking collar 19 on crossbolt 1 engages locking counterbores A 34 and B 36 located on the blade side of the opposite ends of crossbolt slot 32. When finger pressure is applied to the end of crossbolt 1, locking collar 19 is forced to disengage locking counterbore A 34 and retreat to a relieved area on the blade, collar relief 52. This permits the blade to be extended by forward finger pressure on crossbolt 1. When the blade is fully extended, spring pressure forces locking collar 19 into the opposite locking counterbore B 36, thus locking the blade. Reversing the sequence will close and lock the blade.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1992Date of Patent: March 15, 1994Inventor: William E. Cassady

Patent number: 5289638Abstract: A can opener for opening cans of the type having a lid joined to the main body by a rim formed of inner and outer lid surfaces folded onto the upper edge of a can wall. A toothed drive wheel rotatably mounted on a housing engages the inner surface of the rim and forces the outer rim surface against a cutter wheel when a drive shaft is rotated by a turning handle. The turning handle is threaded onto the drive shaft so that rotating the handle both rotates the drive wheel and pulls it tightly against the housing which holds a rotatably mounted cutting wheel. This cuts through the outer lid surface to free the lid from the can. The cutting wheel has an outwardly flaring upper cutting edge and the drive wheel has a curved surface for contacting the inner margin of the rim. The two surfaces coact to force the upper cut surface outwardly and the lower cut surface inwardly. Consequently, as the lid is cut free, it is flared outwardly from the can wall for ease of manual removal and replacement.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1993Date of Patent: March 1, 1994Inventor: Jack Chase

Patent number: 5285574Abstract: A carton opener has a blade holder for receiving and holding a single edged razor blade. A sheath has a body portion including two side walls closely fitted about the blade holder in which the blade holder is capable of sliding within the sheath between a blade retracted position to at least one blade extended position. A slot is formed on one of the side walls longitudinally along the length of the sheath. A moving member is attached to the blade holder and extends from the blade holder through the slot and is in registry with the slot for moving the blade holder longitudinally with respect to the sheath. The moving member includes a detent biased to a side of the slot having recesses for releasably engaging the recesses when the detent is adjacent thereto.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1992Date of Patent: February 15, 1994Assignee: Cosco Industries, Inc.Inventor: Dennis P. Patent number: 5265342Abstract: A drywall measuring and cutting tool has a guide riding the edge of a sheet of drywall and, normal thereto, a graduated rod. A knife is fastened to the rod, and can be rotated for shallow or deep cuts. The guide has an opening through which passes the graduated rod. Idle rod length thus projects away from the knife, avoiding interference with the floor of a drywall truck when cutting drywall carried by the truck. When making repeated narrow scores, measurement and addition of numbers possibly including fractions are avoided by aligning graduation marks with score lines. Adjusting for new width cuts is performed without tools. The knife is adjustable for right or left hand operation.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1992Date of Patent: November 30, 1993Inventor: Joseph D. Lang, Jr.
