  • Patent number: 9807624
Abstract: A communication cell may use a wireless in-band backhaul to route backhaul traffic to a macrocell of a carrier network such that the backhaul traffic is delivered to a core network of the carrier network. The communication cell may route backhaul traffic of user devices via the wireless in-band backhaul between the communication cell and the macrocell. The wireless in-band backhaul may take place of a dedicated backhaul between the communication cell and the core network. As the backhaul traffic is routed, if a characteristic of the wireless communication between the communication cell and the macrocell fails to meet a threshold, an antenna of the communication cell may be electrically or mechanically adjusted to improve the characteristic of the wireless communication. The adjustment of the antenna includes performing a beam forming or moving one or more antenna elements of the antenna.

  • Patent number: 9736874
Abstract: Embodiments are provided herein for determining a synchronizing master for device-to-device (D2D) communication in a cellular network environment. In an embodiment, a user equipment (UE) receives a discovery signal comprising a timing reference, and determines a transmitter of the discovery signal. In accordance with the determination of the transmitter of the discovery signal, the UE performs one of synchronizing to the timing reference in the discovery signal and transmitting a second discovery signal. The UE performs the synchronizing to the timing reference if the transmitter of the discovery is a cellular network. Alternatively, the UE transmits the second discovery signal upon determining that the transmitter of the discovery signal is a second UE that is out of coverage of a cellular network.

  • Patent number: 9681370
Abstract: A wireless device may automatically connect to a preferred wireless network, such as a preferred Wi-Fi network. The wireless device may order a plurality of wireless networks according to initial criteria, such as the time the wireless device last connected to each wireless network. Preference rules may then be applied to reorder the wireless networks. Each preference rule may be applied only if an associated score meets a threshold. A scan may be performed to determine which of the wireless networks are available for connection. The wireless device may automatically connect to the highest-ordered available wireless network. The scores associated with the preference rules may be modified in response to events that indicate a user preference for one or more of the wireless networks, such as manually switching from one network to another.

  • Patent number: 9615282
Abstract: Method and apparatus for improving the quality of measurements performed on non-serving frequencies and/or the quality of serving cell data reception by intelligently configuring measurement gaps during which a wireless device is to perform those measurements. The intelligent configuration processing entails obtaining information that identifies, for each of a plurality of candidate non-serving frequencies, one or more measurement bandwidths over which one or more corresponding measurements on that non-serving frequency are to be performed. In at least some embodiments, such candidate non-serving frequencies represent frequencies for which the device has requested measurements gaps. The processing further includes selecting a subset of the candidate non-serving frequencies based on the measurement bandwidths. The processing finally includes configuring measurement gaps during which the wireless device is to perform one or more measurements on the selected non-serving frequencies.
