  • Patent number: 7844725
Abstract: Methods of data streaming from an encoder to a decoder through a connection subjected to time-varying conditions are disclosed. The connection is assigned a nominal flow rate and an encoding coefficient associated with the connection modifies the nominal flow rate to determine a permissible flow rate compatible with a time-varying state of the connection. Multiple performance characteristics are associated with the connection and corresponding sets of performance measurements taken over adaptively selected time windows are acquired. Performance metrics having one-to-one correspondence to the performance characteristics are determined and compared with lower bounds and upper bounds of respective predefined acceptance intervals. A current encoding coefficient is computed as a function of the performance metrics and used to determine the permissible flow rate. The encoder's configuration is adapted to produce an encoded signal which maximizes signal fidelity under the constraint of the permissible flow rate.

  • Patent number: 7836190
Abstract: The invention is based on the idea of managing multimedia resource reservation by a solution in which, for a first user terminal, a first media terminal is searched and reserved, and a multimedia session is started. A multimedia session request is transmitted from the first user terminal to a second user terminal via an IMS subsystem. A second media terminal is searched and reserved for the second user terminal. The information on the reserved second media terminal is transmitted via the IMS to the first user terminal, which informs the first media terminal of the reserved second media terminal. After that, real-time data traffic can be transmitted via an IP network, e.g., the Internet, between the first media terminal and the second media terminal.

  • Patent number: 7836208
Abstract: The invention relates to active star coupler based network handling of redundancy in the physical layer by transmitting a message to both regular and redundant links. In an error free case, the message is forwarded by the regular interface, while the redundant link, is blocked. Each interface is equipped with link failure detection logic. If a link failure is detected, an incoming message is blocked and the affected interface controls the interface connected to the redundant link to take over message forwarding. If the link recovers, the regular interface takes over forwarding responsibility and the redundant link is disabled.

  • Patent number: 7822867
Abstract: A method is provided for sending data packets from a server to a client. A stream of data packets from the server to the client is composed of a main stream P, a retransmission stream R, and an advance stream A. P and A are fixed when R is zero. A is zero and the sum of P and R are fixed when R is not zero or when the client has accumulated data beyond a given threshold. A packet sent by the server but not received by the client is sent again to the client a given time after it was first sent. A packet sent by the server but not received by the client is sent again to the client only if the latter has already previously received a given number of packets sent by the server.

  • Patent number: 7809828
Abstract: A computer implemented method, data processing system, and computer program product for maintaining state consistency among multiple state-driven file system entities when the file system entities become disconnected. Responsive to a distributed file system server being disconnected from a distributed file system client, a monitor is registered with the consistency management framework (CMF) for a file system. When the CMF detects access to a file in the file system, the CMF notifies the monitor of the access to the file, and the monitor stores information about state of the file. When the distributed file system server is reconnected to the distributed file system client, information about state of the file stored in the monitor is provided to the distributed file system client.

  • Patent number: 7769802
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel technique for Web-based asynchronous processing of synchronous requests. The systems and methods of the present invention utilize a synchronous interface in order to couple with systems that synchronously communicate (e.g., to submit queries and receive results). The interface enables reception of synchronous requests, which are queued and parsed amongst subscribed processing servers within a server farm. Respective servers can serially and/or concurrently process the request and/or portions thereof via a dynamic balancing approach. Such approach distributes the request to servers based on server load, wherein respective portions can be re-allocated as server load changes. Results can be correlated with the request, aggregated, and returned such that it appears to the requester that the request was synchronously serviced. The foregoing mitigates the need for clients to perform client-side aggregation of asynchronous results.

  • Patent number: 7739388
Abstract: A method of managing data center power usage based on service commitments. A power and capacity management utility measures performance characteristics of applications hosted by a data center that include power consumption and transaction processing time. When the performance characteristics are above (or below) a first pre-defined target range, the utility decreases (or increases, respectively) a clock rate and processor voltage of one or more active servers. When the performance characteristics are within the first target range and the clock speed is above (or below) a second pre-defined target range, the utility activates (or deactivates, respectively) one or more inactive (or active, respectively) servers. When the size of an inactive server pool is above a third pre-defined target range, the utility moves inactive servers to an unallocated server pool. When the size of the inactive server pool is below the third target range, the utility allocates additional servers.

  • Patent number: 7594011
Abstract: The popularity of web pages is monitored and used to rank the web pages retrieved in response to an Internet search. The popularity of a web page is proportionate to the number of visits to that web page. Web pages with greater popularity are ranked higher in priority. Furthermore, the score of a first web page is propagated to a plurality of second web pages to which the first web page is linked substantially in relative proportion to the popularity of the links from the first web page to each of the second web pages. Monitoring devices monitor TCP packets traversing the Internet and extract information from the TCP packets, such as the requested URI or URL, the client IP address, a server IP address and a server host name, and a referrer URI, if any. The extracted information is forwarded to a processing module that keeps track of the popularity of the web pages.
