  • Patent number: 8731734
Abstract: A method for adjusting the vertical position of hydroponic supports of a growing system is provided. The supports are used for growing crops. A relative position between the two supports is adjustable. Actual vertical position data for the supports is received and compared with the desired data. The actual vertical position of a first support is adjusted relative to an adjacent second support when the actual data is different from the desired data. A growing system for optimizing crop production comprises generally horizontal hydroponic supports adapted to receive nutrients for feeding the crops. A position actuator is connected to the supports to vertically move them relative to one another. A position-adjusting module receives actual vertical position data of the supports and compared it with the desired data. An actuation command is transmitted to the position actuator when the actual position is different from the desired position.

  • Patent number: 8700219
Abstract: A periodic rotational vibration check for storage devices to compensate for varying loads is disclosed. A variable representing rotational vibration status is maintained in a rotational vibration log. The variable is processed to determine whether a storage device exhibits a rotational vibration issue. Workload analysis is performed to identify a change to the workloads run on physically separate hardware to resolve the rotational vibration issue and thus eliminate the need for more expensive hardware.

  • Patent number: 8639363
Abstract: A system and method are provided for managing a plurality of components. The system can comprise a first component having a first operational parameter and a second component having a second operational parameter. The operational parameters of the first and second components can be modified in response to signals regarding the other one of the first and second components. • Patent number: 8639390
Abstract: A system is disposed at a location of a utility commodity subscriber for informing the subscriber of and controlling utility commodity usage. The system includes utility meters, an information and control apparatus, and a first and second data communication link. The meters measure usage and generate usage signals. The information and control apparatus includes a microprocessor, a memory, a clock, and a user interface. The first data communication link is between the utility meters and the information and control apparatus, and the second data communication link is between the information and control apparatus and one or more central locations. The second communication link also provides rate information to the information and control apparatus and utility commodity usage data to the one or more central locations. The microprocessor computes an accumulated cost of utility commodity for a predetermined period of time. Information related to the accumulated cost is output to the subscriber.

  • Patent number: 8634938
Abstract: A method for safely parameterizing an electrical device, wherein a parameter input by a user on a control unit is transmitted to the electrical device and stored therein with write protection, the stored parameter is transmitted back to the control unit and displayed at the control unit for confirmation by the user, and the user confirmation is transmitted to the electrical device. In accordance with the invention, the stored parameter is transmitted back together with the name of the parameter, with a code generated by the device and in a data format which cannot be processed by the control unit. The returned parameter, the name of the returned parameter and the code are displayed for the user on the control unit, and the confirmation is checked in the electrical device to determine whether the confirmation contains the code.

  • Patent number: 8606377
Abstract: A computer-implemented system for process control has two operating modes: normal mode and active procedure mode, with automatic transition between them. In normal mode, the operating system, firewall and anti-virus are fully operational. When entering a time-critical phase of a process, a process control application signals the operating system and utilities, whereupon transition to active procedure mode automatically occurs, in which access by the system services and by other applications to the resources of the computer is selectively limited in favor of the process control application. Upon completion of the procedure, the system automatically returns to normal mode.

  • Patent number: 8606428
Abstract: In order to adequately but not excessively or unnecessarily cool heat generating electrical components and decrease the noise produced by fans used to cool the heat generating electrical components in an electrical hardware system, an environmental controller controls the speeds of the fans using at least two temperature sensors. In one example, a first temperature sensor measures a hotspot component temperature and generates a hotspot component temperature value, and a second temperature sensor measures an air inlet temperature and generates an air inlet temperature value. The environmental controller controls the speeds of the fans based on the difference between the measured hotspot component temperature value and a target hotspot component temperature value calculated based on the measured air inlet temperature value and a predefined function.
