  • Patent number: 5851153
Abstract: A steel pin is disclosed of a type to be forcibly driven into a steel substrate by using a powder-actuated tool. The steel pin has a substantially cylindrical shank and a substantially sharp point which extends from one end of the substantially cylindrical shank, which conforms substantially to a tangent or secant ogive except for a substantially spherical tip having a radius in a range of approximately 0.02 inch (approximately 5 millimeters) to approximately 0.03 inch (approximately 7.5 millimeters), which has substantially true concentricity, which has surface-texture irregularities with a roughness-height index value in a range from approximately 10 microinches (approximately 0.25 micrometers) to approximately 15 microinches (approximately 0.38 micrometers), and which appears to be substantially free of other surface imperfections when viewed under 60.times. magnification.

  • Patent number: 5743126
Abstract: A roll stand for a rolling mill has a housing with a through opening. The housing rotatably supports a pair of roll shafts, at least one of which is journalled for rotation in the eccentric bores of interconnected sleeves. The roll shafts carry work rolls positioned in the through opening to define a roll pass therebetween. An adjustment mechanism is axially engageable with one of the interconnected sleeves to rotate both sleeves and thereby adjust the parting between the work rolls. The adjustment mechanism is contained in a module which is separably connected to the housing.

  • Patent number: 5706688
Abstract: An optimizing method for improving the efficiency of production is provided for a steel rolling mill using a Steckel mill to roll steel slab to end-product thickness, and associated downstream equipment of limited capacity to generate strip and/or plate end-product. The optimizing method allows for continuous processing of steel slab of a mass within the capacity limits of the Steckel mill and equipment upstream of the Steckel mill, but in excess of the capacity of the associated downstream equipment, by first rolling the slab in the Steckel mill to intermediate coilable thickness, and then severing the intermediate steel product to produce two derivative segments, one of a target mass within the limit of capacity of the coiler furnaces and downstream equipment, and another, typically smaller, residual segment. The residual segment is disposed of, optionally first milled to end-product thickness in the Steckel mill, and transferred to conventional downstream equipment.

  • Patent number: 5694799
Abstract: The invention is directed to a hot-rolling process and a hot-rolling mill for metal strips (5) having one or more roll stands with work rolls (1, 2). In order to prevent surface defects on the work rolls (1, 2), a coolant liquid is sprayed on the entry side in a narrow region extending immediately in front of the roll gap exclusively by a series of flat jet nozzles in such a way that their core jets primarily strike the surface of the work rolls or are directed into the roll gap for direct cooling and in that the entering metal strip is acted upon at the same time by the same coolant liquid for protecting the surfaces of the rolls from the radiated heat of the metal strip. The spraying of the coolant liquid is regulated in such a way that the metal strip is cooled only in a very narrow outer zone. In so doing, the temperature at the surface of the work rolls (1, 2) is adjusted in such a way that it lies below the boiling point of the coolant liquid at least immediately in front of the roll gap.

  • Patent number: 5666837
Abstract: A work roll cross type rolling mill comprises a pair of work rolls and a pair of back-up rolls for backing up the work rolls. The back-up rolls are so arranged that their axes can be inclined within horizontal planes only to three or four specific angular positions. The work rolls are allowed to be inclined within horizontal planes with respect to the back-up rolls such that the axes of the work rolls cross the axes of the associated back-up rolls and cross each other. The nip between each the work roll and the associated back-up roll is lubricated so as to reduce axial thrust generated therebetween due to the crossing of the rolls. The cross angle between the work rolls is set and controlled during rolling operation only when the roll peripheral speed or the rolling speed is 50 m/min or higher.

  • Patent number: 5660594
Abstract: A process for forming a screw thread on a corrugated bar used in concrete reinforcement joints such as anchor bolt joints. The ribs and flank fillets are removed from the end portion of the corrugated bar to be threaded. The end portion is then heated in a controlled manner such that the temperature of the end portion is highest at the end and falls smoothly toward the beginning of the ribless portion of the bar. The bar is immovably locked in place and the end portion is pressed by a movable cylindrical mold. Due to the temperature difference along the end portion, hot upsetting sets in at the end and advances toward the beginning of the ribless portion and the cross-sectional area of the end portion expands to become equal to an inner diameter of the mold. A screw thread is then formed on the end portion of the bar, the cross-sectional area of the screw thread being at least equal to the cross-sectional area of a remainder of the bar and the thread being longer than a diameter of the bar.

  • Patent number: 5653137
Abstract: A multi-high rolling mill is disclosed which includes an upper work roll backed by an intermediate roll and a backup roll and a lower work roll backed up by a single backup roll. Control benders are provided on each of the intermediate roll and the upper and lower work rolls. In order to optimize the control of the rolling operation for skinpass rolling and the like, the control benders for the upper work roll and the intermediate backup roll are controlled so as to effect a control of the crown sheet over the entire width of the material being rolled, while the control bender for the lower work roll controls the sheet crown of the rolled material at the lateral side end portions, resulting in a composite control substantially improving the sheet quality and preventing edge wrinkles in the material being rolled. In the disclosed embodiments, the intermediate roll has a larger drum length than a predetermined maximum sheet width of rolled material to be rolled by the work roll.

  • Patent number: 5647237
Abstract: In a previous process, the influence of roll eccentricities on the output thickness of the rolled material in a roll stand is suppressed by simulating the output signal of an oscillator and supplying this value to a position or thickness control for the roll stand, where the frequency of the output signal is set according to the roll rotation speed. In the process according to the invention, the amplitude and phase of the output signal are set so that the exit thickness of the rolled material is measured with a measuring delay in relation to the thickness reduction in the roll gap. A difference signal is generated from the delayed roll screw-down signal and a measured thickness signal multiplied by the sum of one and the quotient of the rigidity of the rolled material and the roll stand. The output signal of the oscillator is corrected according to the difference between the output signal and the difference signal. The output signal is phase shifted by the amount of measurement delay for a forward slip.
