  • Patent number: 5640872
Abstract: In a process for cooling hot rolled metal plates (16) and strips, especially such of aluminium or an aluminium alloy, a hot rolled strip (12) is cut to plates (16) immediately after it emerges from a rolling mill (10). Immediately after the cutting to length, the plates (16) pass through a cooling station (20) where they are jetted directly with water from flat stream nozzles (52). The water stream (W) emerging from the flat stream nozzles (52) form essentially a plane (E) which is directed at the plate surface (32). Immediately after it leaves the flat stream nozzle (52), the water stream (W) is periodically deflected by means of streams (A, B) of air or water in such a manner that the water stream (W) striking the plate surface (32) performs a wiping action.

  • Patent number: 5638716
Abstract: A bending block for bending the rolls of cluster roll stands is rigidly connected on both sides of the chocks of the pair of rolls to be bent to the windowed housing posts of the roll housing or to units for the horizontal stabilization of the rolls. The bending block has bending jaws which are slidably guided in both bending directions and are driven by means of piston-cylinder units. The chocks or the units for horizontal stabilization have pressure receiving surfaces and the bending jaws have pressure contact surfaces which act on the pressure receiving surfaces in one or the other bending direction. Each bending jaw includes a pair of partial bending jaws which can be moved independently of each other and in opposite directions, wherein the pressure contact surfaces of each partial bending jaw corresponds to one or the other bending direction.

  • Patent number: 5638714
Abstract: The invention is a cold rolling process which converts rods of hot rolled metal into strips with width to thickness ratios as high as approximately 17 to 1. The process cools the rod between successive rolling mills and employs feed backward tension controls to direct the speed of each individual upline rolling mill in order to reduce the thermal and mechanical shock experienced by the rod as it is flattened into a strip.

  • Patent number: 5636544
Abstract: A rolled metal strip which is free of torsion and on which a superior gloss is obtained by a combination of cross rolling and parallel rolling upon cold rolling a metal strip and by rolling the material in a parallel rolling manner in either at least the final stand (in the case of a tandem mill array) or at least the final pass (in the case of a single stand mill such as a reversible mill or the like). If necessary, the metal strip is preliminarily rolled by cross rolling at a rolling reduction rate of over 5% and then cold rolled by either parallel rolling or a combination of cross rolling and parallel rolling.

  • Patent number: 5634360
Abstract: A guiding method and apparatus are presented for preventing the generation of lateral curving in a rolled slab produced in a roughing mill train, consisting of an edging mill and a horizontal mill in tandem, for example. The apparatus basically includes a first side guide placed upstream at the entrance to the edging mill, a second side guide placed downstream at the exit of the horizontal mill and a third side guide placed between the edging mill and the horizontal mill. The first side guide at the entrance to the edging mill synchronously closes the separation distance of the guide components upon the entry of the rolled slab into the first side guide, leaving a narrow space between the guide and the rolled slab. The third side guide closes the separation spacing based on slab exit timing representing the instant the tail end of the rolled slab passes through the edging mill. The second side guide assumes a narrow separation distance when the head end of the rolled slab enters therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5626522
Abstract: In a method of making a head on an elongate blank (26), the blank (26) is moved into a die (16) having a bottom stop (28) such that part of the blank (26) extends outside the die (16) end opposite the bottom stop (28). The protruding part of the blank (26) is engaged by a pre-upsetting bushing (25) positioned in extension of the die (16) and a punch (27) is slidably movable in the pre-upsetting bushing. The bushing (25) and the die (16) are moved away from each other during the latter part of the deforming procedure. The movement of both the punch (27) and the bushing (25) with respect to the die (16) is positively controlled so that the bushing (25) and the die (16) are moved away from each other at the latter part of the deforming procedure, while the punch (27) continues to press against the blank in a direction toward the die (16).

  • Patent number: 5626521
Abstract: A method of manufacturing an improved screw washer, an improved screw washer, and an improved mold for fabricating the improved screw washer. Using a selected metal plate having a thickness thinner than a nominal height demanded for a nut, the invention primarily aims to form an improved screw washer incorporating a nut satisfying the demanded height. The invention is to provide an improved method of manufacturing an improved screw washer, the improved screw washer, and an improved mold for fabricating the screw washer. Particularly, using this improved mold, the improved screw washer can easily be manufactured, where the above-identified nut is solidly bonded with the metal plate without being disengaged therefrom, and yet, a sufficiently lengthy tapped hole is formed. Structurally, a nut is formed in the state being continuous to a metal plate after punching out part of the metal plate.

  • Patent number: 5626044
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing steel bars wherein at least four individual bars are rolled at the same time from a single billet, thus increasing the production capacity of a given rolling mill operating at a predetermined velocity and designed to produce only one or two bars at the same time and without requiring tension relieving stations between the slitting box and the finishing rolling stands as in the prior art. The problems of uniform quality of final bars are solved by preforming the outermost elements of a multi-stranded stock with different shape and/or cross section as compared to the inner elements of said multi-stranded stock. An apparatus for separation of the individual elements of the multi-stranded bar is provided wherein the elements are separated at several stages starting with the two outermost elements in the first stage and continuing in the same order until the center elements are separated in the last stage.

  • Patent number: 5623845
Abstract: Flanged structural products are rolled directly from rectangular slabs using only a universal mill having web rolls of fixed width corresponding to a selected finished web depth of the finished product. Original slab width is dependent upon the area ratio of the web and flanges in the intended finished product.Flanged structural products are rolled directly from rectangular slabs using only a universal mill having web rolls of fixed width corresponding to a selected finished web depth of the finished product. Original slab width is dependent upon the area ratio of the web and flanges in the intended finished product. As the slab thickness is reduced between web rolls, flange rolls simultaneously apply pressure to the longitudinal edge surfaces of the slab, moving material toward the slab's center. The edge surfaces of the slab become upset in each pass so that the slab thickness at the edges exceeds the original slab thickness.

  • Patent number: 5624319
Abstract: A process for production of a two-part cage nut from a single metal plate. The cage nut includes a nut slidably carried on a holding part. The nut includes a base plate having a threaded sleeve. The holding part includes a holding plate having an aperture and a pair of side walls which are bent over the edge of the base plate of the nut. The process production includes stamping the holding part and nut from a single metal plate. The nut is joined to the base plate by a narrow connecting web. The base plate is then bent about the connecting web and positioned over the holding plate between the side walls. The side walls are bent inwardly until they extend over the side edges of the base plate of the nut. The nut is separated from the holding plate by shearing off the now bent over portion of the connecting web. The nut is permitted to slide between boundary tabs on a guide path between the side walls.
