Abstract: Some embodiments are directed to a method performed by a pipe control node for managing network resources that are used to transport network traffic. The method includes allocating network resources to a virtual pipe for transporting a plurality of multimedia streams through the network. Utilization of the network resources by the plurality of multimedia streams transported through the virtual pipe is monitored relative to the network resources allocated to the virtual pipe. The network resources that are used by the plurality of multimedia streams transported through the virtual pipe are managed in response to the monitored utilization. Some other embodiments are directed to a corresponding pipe control node that manages network resources which are used to transport network traffic.

Abstract: In a digital broadcast receiving apparatus, a receiver receives video packets or audio packets configuring a program of digital broadcast. A selector selects a part of the video packets or the audio packets of each channel received by the receiver. A determination unit determines whether or not decoding of the part of the packets selected by the selector has been completed normally. A decision unit decides requirement for descramble processing of each channel based on the determination result of the determination unit.

Abstract: Television converter devices in accordance with present invention determine whether the programming is to be blocked or not, then inserts an appropriate V-code into the vertical blanking interval (VBI) of the programming before delivering the programming to one or more V-chip enabled TV where the V-chip blocks the programming as appropriate. Various methods of determining whether the programming is to be blocked are disclosed.

Abstract: Systems and methods are presented for presenting advertisements to users of a fantasy sports contest application. Advertisements are displayed in conjunction with fantasy sports contest information and may be interactive in nature. The advertisements may be used to inform the user of prizes being awarded for performance in the fantasy sports contest, including prizes being awarded for performing in an instant scoring opportunity based on real-time action in a related sports broadcast. The advertisements may be intelligently scheduled around certain events in a related sports broadcast to take advantage of user purchasing habits. The advertisements may be selected according to a user profile. The user profile may include information on the user's demonstrated interests, which may be determined using the user's preferences in the fantasy contest, prior television viewing habits, and other suitable information. The advertisements may be targeted to the user's specific geographic location.

Abstract: The present invention includes comparing a content rating value set on a received broadcast content to a reference rating value set on the mobile terminal, if the content rating value meets the reference rating value as a result of the comparing step, displaying the broadcast content, receiving an input of a viewing restriction command signal in the course of displaying the broadcast content, if the viewing restriction command signal is inputted, adjusting at least one of a plurality of field values configuring the reference rating value to prevent the content rating value from meeting the reference rating value, and if the content rating value fails to meet the reference rating value as a result of the adjusting step, stopping a display of the first broadcast content.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a technique for controlling the presentation of content in a venue to provide an optimal presentation, as well as one or more standard and or user defined presentations. The present disclosure includes optimal setup data along with content to permit devices operating according to the present disclosure to decode the setup data and configure themselves to provide an optimal presentation of the content. A content presentation optimizer according to the present disclosure provides the necessary mechanism for any compliant device to understand a basic set of control commands, so that any one device within a connected network of compliant devices can initiate these control commands toward a destination device.

Abstract: A method performed by a digital television receiver associated with a television includes storing in a memory a first rating configuration, including a region identification of the first rating configuration and a version identification of the first rating configuration, for rating a television program in accordance with a rating scheme, and storing in the memory an identification of a first television channel as a default channel for the rating scheme. The method further includes receiving a subset of a group of transport packets via a receiving channel, comparing the region identification and the version identification of the first and the second rating configurations, and if the region identifications are the same, and the version identifications of the first and the second rating configurations indicate that the second configuration is not newer than the first rating configuration, not storing the second configuration.

Abstract: When a user uses a display device for the first time in a factory mode, whether or not there are defective pixels is examined, and a guide message for setting initial settings is provided, so the user can use the display device in an optimal environment. As a result, if the display device has defective pixels, the user can be provided with after-sales service at an appropriate time, and use the display device at its full potential in an environment most suitable for the display device is set.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus to identify exposure to three dimensional media presentations are disclosed. An example method includes detecting a first brightness level with a first sensor and a second brightness level with a second sensor at a first time. A third brightness level is detected with the first sensor and a fourth brightness level is detected with the second sensor at a second time later than the first time. A 3D media counter is incremented when either: the first brightness is greater than the second brightness and the third brightness is less than the fourth brightness, or the first brightness is less than the second brightness and the third brightness is greater than the fourth brightness. The media is identified as 3D media when the 3D media counter exceeds a threshold.

Abstract: A method for transmitting data between two devices, such as a set-top box and a mobile device. The user of the mobile device may view the transmitted data as it is received by the mobile device. The data may be transmitted via UMTS. Additionally, the user may be allowed to view data because the user has a subscription to access the data through the set-top box. Furthermore, the set-top box may send a notification to the user to query whether the set-top box should transmit the data to the mobile device. In the case that the user responds and requests the data to be transmitted to the mobile device, the set-top box may transmit the requested data to the mobile device.

Abstract: A system and method for utilizing data stored in an EPG database for modifying advertisement information. In this way, a service provider and/or an advertiser can transmit a single advertisement to all the television stations regardless of their geographic location and other user specific information, and need not re-transmit the advertisement even if there is a change in the show's program description. When the advertisement is displayed, the correct updated information is retrieved from the EPG database and inserted into the advertisement. In one aspect, the present invention describes a method for modifying an advertisement in an EPG comprising the steps of: storing television schedule information in a first database; storing advertisement information in a second database; incorporating a portion of the television schedule information into a portion of the advertisement information to form a modified advertisement; and displaying the modified advertisement on a screen.

Abstract: Systems and methods pertaining to a client-server architecture for communicating video frames across a network are disclosed. In one embodiment, a system includes a first engine residing on a first device, with the first engine adapted to encode a succession of video frames of a user interface of a program for transmission across the network. The encoding of the video frames is based on one or more feedback parameters and includes video compression techniques. In the same embodiment, the system includes a first command process engine operatively coupled to the program. In the same embodiment, the system includes a second engine residing on a second device, the second engine adapted to decode the succession of video frames after transmission across the network. In the same embodiment, the system includes a second command process engine operatively coupled to the first command process engine and adapted to communicate user input of the second device to the program via the first command process engine.

Abstract: A bandwidth management system, receiver, and method of managing bandwidth in a content delivery system are described. In one embodiment, the method includes: identifying two or more content items which are associated with at least some common content and which are temporally related; determining a relative priority of the least some of the identified content items; and allowing a receiver requesting the content associated with a lower priority content item to access a multicast associated with a higher priority content item.

Abstract: A method of detecting missing devices in a home entertainment system using a wireless home entertainment hub includes obtaining a registration of at least one device that includes a source device. An instruction is received from a user to present program content from the source device. A set of one or more sink devices missing from the home entertainment system for a presentation of the program content based on an assessment by the wireless home entertainment hub of presentation capabilities of the home entertainment system using the at least one device registered with the wireless home entertainment hub is determined. The set of one or more sink devices is presented to the user.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for simultaneously testing multiple set-top boxes uses a test equipment structure or frame for receiving a known good set-top box and a plurality of set-top boxes to be tested against a known good set-top box. A movable shelf structure is provided for electrically connecting at least each set-top box to be tested by a single sliding motion. Connectors on a backplane are made moveable to adjust for slight variations in the position of the connectors on the set-top boxes. An infrared control system generates an infrared signal to transmit to each set-top box and other related equipment in the testing operation such as televisions and receivers such that the function of each set-top box and related equipment is the same at each instant. Analyzing equipment is provided to analyze at least the audio output of each set-top box being tested at a selected channel and compared to the audio output of the known good set-top box.

Abstract: The described methods and systems provide for the representation and matching of video content, including spatio-temporal matching of different video sequences. A particular method of determining temporal correspondence between different sets of video data inputs the sets of video data and represents the video data as ordered sequences of visual nucleotides. Temporally corresponding subsets of video data are determined by aligning the sequences of visual nucleotides.

Abstract: A method for compensating hardware misalignments in a camera is presented. The camera includes a maneuverable part and a fixed part, and the maneuverable part is controlled by a steering motor system. In a first step of the method mechanical coordinates from the steering motor system is received, wherein the mechanical coordinates correspond to a pan and tilt position, the pan and tilt position having a complementary pan and tilt position. Next, pre-determined calibration data corresponding to the received mechanical coordinates is read from a memory wherein the pre-determined calibration data describes a relationship between a pan and tilt position and a complementary pan and tilt position, and then compensated coordinates are determined based upon the received mechanical coordinates and the pre-determined calibration data.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for enabling IP service subscribers to share media contents with other IP service subscribers or Internet users in either a secured or open fashion are disclosed. In one embodiment, the present invention enables the sharing of home movies, pictures, and other media contents, where media could be stored media or media created in real-time. Namely, the present method allows IP service subscribers to effectively create their own TV station, e.g., complete with stored or live content programming and content scheduling. In turn, the method allows a viewing subscriber to select and view a shared media program created by another subscriber.
