  • Patent number: 10036933
Abstract: A two-dimensional photonic crystal in which are inserted four waveguides and a resonant cavity. Owing to the existence of the photonic band gap, an electromagnetic signal propagating through the device is confined within the guides and the cavity and, through the adjustment of the orientation of a dipole mode generated within the cavity, is able to function in three distinct regimes. In regime 1, subjected to an external DC magnetic field +H0, it functions as a two-way divider, with isolation of the input relative to the two outputs, and, upon reversal of the field signal, it functions as an optical key. In regime 2, with the use of a DC magnetic field ?H0, it functions as a waveguide bender, with the input isolated from the output, and, upon reversal of the field signal, functions as an optical key. In regime 3, subject to the application of an external DC magnetic field +H1, the device functions as a three-way divider.

  • Patent number: 10036905
Abstract: A compact six-port Photonic Crystal (PhC) circulator includes a hexagonal PhC branch waveguide and six waveguide ports, wherein six PhC branch waveguides respectively correspond to the six waveguide ports, and the six waveguide ports respectively are symmetrically distributed at the periphery of PhCs. One second dielectric material column is arranged at the center of the hexagonal PhC waveguide. Six identical magneto-optical material columns respectively are arranged at first adjacent positions of the second dielectric material column. Six identical third dielectric material columns respectively are arranged at second adjacent positions of the second dielectric material column. An electromagnetic signal is inputted from any one of the waveguide ports and is outputted from the next waveguide port adjacent thereto, while the remaining waveguide ports are in a signal isolated state, thus forming unidirectional circular transmission.

  • Patent number: 10033148
Abstract: Rare earth doped fiber lasers can be robust and efficient sources of high quality light, but are usually limited to the highest gain transitions of the active species. But rare earths typically possess a multitude of potentially useful transitions that might be accessed if the dominant transition can be suppressed. In fiber lasers this suppression is complicated by the very high net gain the dominant transitions exhibit; effective suppression requires some mechanism distributed along the length of the fiber. We have developed a novel waveguide with resonant leakage elements that frustrate guidance at well-defined and selectable wavelengths. Based on this waveguide, we have fabricated a Large Mode Area Neodymium doped fiber with suppression of the four-level transition around 1060 nm, and demonstrated lasing on the three-level transition at 930 nm with good efficiency.

  • Patent number: 10007074
Abstract: Described herein are photonic systems and devices including a optical interface unit disposed on a bottom side of a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) to receive light from an emitter of the PIC. A top side of the PIC includes a flip-chip interface for electrically coupling the PIC to an organic substrate via the top side. An alignment feature corresponding to the emitter is formed with the emitter to be offset by a predetermined distance value; because the emitter and the alignment feature are formed using a shared processing operation, the offset (i.e., predetermined distance value) may be precise and consistent across similarly produced PICs. The PIC comprises a processing feature to image the alignment feature from the bottom side (e.g., a hole). A heat spreader layer surrounds the optical interface unit and is disposed on the bottom side of the PIC to spread heat from the PIC.

Abstract: The present invention provides an optical waveguide photosensitive resin composition containing a resin component and a photoacid generator, wherein the photoacid generator has a characteristic property (x) such that an absorption limit (O—O transition energy) calculated based on the shape of an ultraviolet spectrum obtained by spectrometrically analyzing a 0.1 wt % propylene carbonate solution of the photoacid generator by means of an ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometer is 3.5 to 4.1 eV. Where an optical waveguide core layer is formed by using the inventive optical waveguide photosensitive resin composition, for example, the optical waveguide core layer has a lower loss, and is excellent in patternability and reflow resistance.

  • Patent number: 9986217
Abstract: A magneto photonic encoder, in plane, includes a set of periodic structures of magneto photonic crystals for rotating a polarization of a beam of light responsive to a controllable magnetic field as it is transmitted through the periodic structures. The rotated polarization, in cooperation with a non-reciprocal-mode conversion device produces an encoded signal without use of crossed polarizers. Path optics guide the light beam into the periodic structures for polarization rotation and then to direct the modified beam of light into the non-reciprocal-mode conversion device. Depending upon the implementation, the encoded output may serve as display image primitive precursor to produce an image constituent signal.

  • Patent number: 9952455
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention describe systems, apparatuses and methods for providing athermicity and a tunable spectral response for optical filters. Finite impulse response (FIR) filters are commonly implemented in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to make devices such as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) devices, asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers (AMZIs) and array waveguide gratings (AWGs). Athermicity of an FIR filter describes maintaining a consistent frequency transmission spectrum as the ambient temperature changes. A tunable spectral response for an FIR filter describes changing the spectrum of an FIR filter based on its application, as well as potentially correcting for fabrication deviations from the design. In addition, embodiments of the invention reduce energy dissipation requirements and control complexity compared to prior art solutions.
