The lens member is provided with a rearwardly projecting polygonal rim having a surface which fits against and is sealed to a front rim of the reflector unit. The reflector front rim is provided with frontwardly projecting positioning members near at least two diagonally opposite corners, which fit inside corresponding corners of the lens rim for aligning the lens and reflector members together during sealing.

    Abstract: A control system for an internal combustion engine is described which allows the engine to be started and stopped while unloaded. The invention incorporates the mechanical linkage operated by a solenoid to control a valve at the interior of the engine and an electronic circuit incorporating one or more time delay relays. The invention provides a means of reducing or eliminating the source of vibration resulting from the starting and stopping of a single cylinder diesel engine. Several embodiments are described including one incorporating an integrated circuit timer and one incorporating two time delay relays.

    Abstract: A two cycle, spark ignition, internal combustion engine of the class having a combustion chamber divided into a relatively small ignition region and a larger combustion engine in which the piston reciprocates. Substantially the same stoichiometric fuel-air mixtures are independently supplied to the ignition region in substantially fixed quantities and to the combustion region in variable quantities. These mixtures are compressed simultaneously so that they remain completely separated prior to ignition. The mixtures are stratified with respect to excess air supplied to both regions and to exhaust gases in the engine cylinder, and combustion initiated in the ignition region ignites the variable-sized mixture in the larger region. Burning proceeds from stoichiometric mixtures to lean mixtures as the stratified excess air is mixed into the burning gases. When no fuel is supplied to the combustion region, the ignition region functions independently and burns its fuel efficiently.

    Abstract: Ignition timing for an internal combustion engine is controlled by subtracting a retard correction amount from a basic ignition timing. When engine knocking is detected, the retard correction amount is retarded from the basic ignition timing, but not so that the controlled timing drops below a predetermined limit. If knocking is not detected, the retard correction amount is advanced to thereby control the ignition timing towards, but not exceeding, a knocking limit.

    Abstract: A controlled amount of a fluid (steam or water or a solution of water plus additives) is injected into an internal combustion engine to improve combustion, efficiency, and to reduce emissions. The amount of the fluid injected is controlled in response to engine need. The steam is generated by the heat produced by the engine. Combustion gas temperature is used to control the amount of steam produced by varying the fluid flow through one or more fixed or variable orifice control valves. The steam is injected in a piston engine to cool peak temperatures, to prevent detonation and pre-ignition, to smooth out hot spots, to prevent auto-ignition or dieseling, and to use the vapor energy in the expansion cycle to increase low speed torque and acceleration. The steam is used to cause full retard of the vacuum spark advance during acceleration at full load from low speed, and a large amount of steam is injected at this point in the cycle to prevent pre-ignition and detonation.

The method is adapted to detect, by means of valve opening detecting means, the actual valve opening of an exhaust gas recirculating valve arranged across an exhaust gas recirculating passageway communicating the exhaust passage of the engine with the intake passage thereof, determine the difference between the detected actual valve opening value and a desired valve opening value calculated in response to operating conditions of the engine, and operate a valve actuator means to close or open the exhaust gas recirculating valve so as to minimize the above difference. When the calculated desired valve opening value exceeds a maximum possible valve opening value, the desired valve opening value is set to the maximum possible valve opening value.

    Abstract: A compression control system for an internal combustion engine for preventing the engine from knocking and for improving starting characteristics including an air/fuel mixture feedback circuit for feeding some of an air/fuel mixture in an engine combustion chamber back to the intake duct at a controlled rate. The feedback rate of the air/fuel mixture is determined on the basis of the engine operational condition and is controlled by a compression control valve inserted in the feedback circuit. The compression control valve is associated with a controller which detects the engine operating condition and determines the open period of the compression control valve in accordance with the engine operating condition. The controller also detects the engine operational position in the engine revolution cycle to synchronize the operation of the compression control valve with the engine revolution so that the compression control valve is opened for the controlled duration during the compression stroke of the engine.

The engine is of the reciprocating piston type using conventional valving and intake and exhaust manifolding. Stroke length control is effected by a first planetary gear set driven in oscillation by the piston and a clutch mechanism which selectively locks the gear set to oscillate through either a long arc length for the long stroke or a short arc length for short stroke. Compression ratio adjustment, as well as piston top dead center phasing during and after clutching, is effected by a second planetary gear set driven in oscillation by the piston and a servo-motor for varying the phase of oscillation of the second planetary gear set to shift the top dead center position of the piston as desired independently of the length of stroke of the piston.

    Abstract: A fuel cut-supply control system for a multiple-cylinder internal combustion engine which can effectively prevent engine vibration or shock generated when fuel is cut off or resupplied. The cylinders of the engine are divided into two cylinder groups and fuel is cut off or resupplied to one cylinder group a predetermined delay time after fuel has been cut off from or resupplied to the other cylinder group. The delay time is so determined that vibration caused by the first cylinder group is 180 degrees out of phase with that caused by the second cylinder group. The control system according to the present invention comprises a delay circuit and a first and second fuel cut-supply control sections, in addition to the conventional fuel cut-supply control system.

    Abstract: An exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system has a main control device that supplies a control signal to an EGR valve actuating device that opens an EGR valve to a desired extent. Under normal conditions, a pulse actuating signal having a time-width corresponding to a difference between the actual opening of the EGR valve and the desired opening is supplied to the valve actuating device. Then, the next actuating signal is fed to the valve actuating device after a given length of quiescent time. When the desired opening changes suddenly, however, the normal operation is discontinued and an actuating signal corresponding to a new desired opening is supplied to the valve actuating device. By so doing, the EGR valve is at all times opened to the desired extent, not only under normal conditions but also when the desired amount of valve opening changes suddenly.

    Abstract: A fuel supply control method for electronically controlling the quantity of fuel being supplied to an internal combustion engine at the start of the engine, in response to values of engine control parameters including at least the engine temperature. When there is an abnormality in an engine temperature detecting means that detects the value of the engine temperature, while the engine is operating in a predetermined starting operating condition, control is effected by gradually increasing the quantity of fuel being supplied to the engine with the progress of time starting from a time the engine starter is switched on, by the use of a predetermined dummy signal indicative of engine temperature, in place of an output signal from the aforementioned engine temperature detecting means. Preferably, the value of the above dummy signal is set so as to change from a higher engine temperature value to lower engine temperature values in a successive and stepwise manner at an interval of a predetermined period of time.
