  • Publication number: 20010024086
Abstract: Parallel cathode electrodes extend across the base plate of a display. Each electrode has teeth projecting from both sides, the teeth of adjacent electrodes being closely spaced from one another by a gap that is bridged by a dot of an electron emitter material. A glass screen spaced by a vacuum gap above the base plate carries transparent anode stripes extending transversely of the cathode electrodes and a fluorescent layer of coloured phosphors on the anode stripes. A voltage applied between adjacent cathode electrodes and gates conduction via each electron emitter dot. A voltage applied to an anode stripe causes a part of the current from the emitter directly below the stripe to be directed towards the anode, thereby illuminating the phosphor pixel above the emitter.

  • Patent number: 6284556
Abstract: A diamond grit surface is formed on a substrate (1) having a metal surface (2), such as nickel, by applying a paste (4) of low-grade diamond grit in a binder to the surface. After driving off the binder, the diamond coated surface is placed in a reactor chamber (10) having a microwave plasma reactor (11) and connected to a hydrogen gas pump (12). The substrate (1) is heated in the hydrogen atmosphere at a reduced pressure. The metal surface (2) acts as a catalyst in the presence of the hydrogen plasma to cause regrowth of the diamond (6), giving an improved size, shape and adhesion. The method may be used to make diamond surfaces in electron emitter devices, circuit boards or abrasive devices.

  • Patent number: 6216094
Abstract: A method of analyzing a signal representing a physical parameter to obtain information from said signal and to extrapolate information contained in said signal and/or to ignore an interfering component in part of said signal, said signal representing either only a first portion of a skew distribution, or a first portion of a skew distribution and a second portion containing an interfering component, in which the area of a skew distribution, preferably a lognormal distribution is measured. The method is particularly applicable to the measurement of cardiac output. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5952772
Abstract: An electron emitter (2) has a semiconductor substrate (20) doped with an n-type region (21). A diamond layer (24) is doped by ion implantation with a p-type dopant to form a graded dopant profile region (27) that increases away from the upper surface of the diamond layer (24) and a thin insulating region (28) separating the p-type region (27) from the n-type region (21). The emitter (2) has a first electrical contact (23) on a lower surface of the substrate (20) and a second electrical contact (25) on the upper surface of the diamond layer (24) such that a voltage can be applied across the emitter (2) to cause tunneling of electrons from the n-type region (21) through the insulating region (28) into the p-type region (27), causing emission of electrons from an exposed surface (29).

  • Patent number: 5663611
Abstract: A multi-color display has a matrix of cells containing an ionizable gas and fluorescent layers (18) that fluoresce with different colors. The display has rows of cathodes (21) and anodes (20) one of each of which is exposed within each cell so that individual cells can be energized. Each cathode (21) has at least one field-emitter (23) which may be either an uncoated cone, a cone coated with a material with a negative electron affinity, such as a diamond film (27), or formed with a negative electron affinity material, such as diamond. Cells may include an aluminum layer (17) and a dielectric layer (16) for reflecting UV and VUV radiation.

  • Patent number: 5517907
Abstract: A refuse compactor especially designed for fast food restaurants is of a predetermined limited height dimension allowing its upper surface to function as a serving tray storage rack. The refuse compactor is characterized by having a foldable compaction plate driven by a hydraulic ram. When the compaction plate is elevated to its uppermost position, it is folded in a way that does not interfere with the opening of the refuse entry door. When moving through its compaction stroke, the foldable compaction plate becomes locked in a flat, planar configuration. In this way, it is unnecessary to locate the compaction plate above the refuse entry door, thereby providing a lower profile to the refuse compactor cabinet.

  • Patent number: 5062358
Abstract: A built-in bale ejector for use in a trash compactor comprises an elongated band which is fastened at one end to the floor portion of the compactor cabinet at a front edge thereof and which passes between the floor and a box in which the refuse is to be compacted and then up the inside rear wall of the compactor to a predetermined height. The compactor includes a vertically movable compaction plate which can be driven in reciprocal fashion downward into the box to compress the refuse therein and upward to a "ready" position. When it is desired to eject a filled box, a spring-loaded take-up reel mechanism coupled to the compaction plate can be latched against rotation by a locking mechanism. When so locked, the return stroke of the compaction plate pulls the band tight and thus urges the box filled with the compacted trash to be ejected out through the door opening of the compactor cabinet.

  • Patent number: 5012732
Abstract: A trash compactor of the type comprising a hollow cabinet containing a reciprocally movable compaction plate for crushing and reducing the volume of waste materials deposited therein also includes a sanitary air filtration system for inhibiting the release or airborne particles beyond the confines of the cabinet. A removable air plenum assembly is mounted within the cabinet and has an air inlet in fluid communication with the interior of the compactor cabinet and an air discharge. Motor driven fans create a negative pressure within the cabinet and a series of in-line filters are disposed in the air flow path for capturing airborne particles greater than about 0.3 microns in size and for deodorizing the air exiting the system. The motor-driven fans operate continuously at a low speed when the doors of the trash compactor cabinet are closed and switched to a higher speed when the doors are open to thereby inhibit any outward distribution of airborne particles except through the filter.

  • Patent number: 4991912
Abstract: An elongated, horizontally disposed cabinet of rectangular cross-section is mounted on wheels and is designed to store boxes or bags of compacted organic or inorganic refuse until they can be picked up by a trash hauler. To avoid the necessity of lifting the boxed or bagged-compacted trash, the cabinet includes a conveyor mechanism for facilitating the transport of such boxes or bags from the cabinet entrance to or towards its discharge end. The cabinet includes doors at each end thereof which, when closed, effectively seal the loaded refuse within the cabinet. To slow the decomposition process of the organic refuse, the cabinet is equipped with a temperature control including refrigeration means to be used when ambient temperature is above a predetermined temperature and heating means for prevent freezing when the ambient temperature is below freezing temperatures.

  • Patent number: 4349945
Abstract: A multi-purpose power tool in which a power head and a power carriage are mounted for reciprocal translation on a pair of elongated tubular ways, the ways being pivotally mounted and counterbalanced with respect to a generally horizontal base or stand such that the power head and carriage may be moved independently in a horizontal plane or, alternatively, in a vertical plane. The power head and carriage assemblies may be moved in a precise manner relative to the ways, either manually or by means of a variable speed motor drive. Included within the power head is an arbor assembly which passes through a quill member, the arbor also being driven by a variable speed motor. The quill assembly is provided with means for moving same outwardly from the power head to a desired extent and for subsequently locking it in that position. The carriage assembly includes means for supporting and accurately positioning a work holding table.

  • Patent number: 4165849
Abstract: A combination air brake and engine shield for a jet powered aircraft. A hydraulically operated, hinged shield member, shaped so as to conform to the surface of the aircraft fuselage when in its retracted position, may be swung outwardly therefrom so as to be disposed in front of the air intake of the jet engine powering the craft, to thereby divert any foreign objects from being drawn into the intake and damaging the engine. The same arrangement may also serve as an air brake to effect deceleration of the aircraft. Spring loaded louvers are provided in the shield to permit sufficient air to reach the engine such that problems due to cavitation are avoided.
