  • Patent number: 9271311
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and systems for automated activation and configuration of broadband LTE IANs. A mobile IAN base station, an activated mode and a dormant mode, determines at least one location in a local region of the mobile IAN base station while in the dormant mode. An activation-permission request is submitted to a geo-location-database (GDB) function, and the mobile IAN base station receives an activation-permission response. The response is based on an expected level of wide-area-network (WAN) coverage associated with the determined location. Responsive to receiving an activation-permission grant, the mobile IAN base station transitions to the activated mode. Responsive to not receiving an activation-permission grant, the mobile IAN base station remains in the dormant mode.

  • Publication number: 20150350859
Abstract: A method and mobile device are provided that manage a relay service in a public safety wireless communication system. When the mobile device determines one or more of: another mobile device has exited or is exiting a public safety vehicle or another first mobile device is not receiving a signal from a wide area network of acceptable signal quality, the mobile device activates a relay service. In response to activating the relay service, the mobile device announces an availability of the relay service at the mobile device, receives a registration of the another mobile device for the relay service, and, in response to receiving the registration, relays communications between the another mobile device and an access node. In another embodiment, a method is provided for negotiating a provision of a relay service among multiple mobile devices, wherein each such mobile device currently is providing a relay service.

  • Patent number: 9119123
Abstract: A network node receives a first connection request from user equipment to join a broadband network at a first interface. A mobility manager in the network node accepts the first connection request. The mobility manager sends data from a core network addressed to the user equipment and receives data from the user equipment through the first interface. The mobility manager receives, from a local area network, a second connection request sent from the user equipment. The second connection request is for the user equipment to communicate with the broadband network via the local area network. The mobility manager accepts the second connection request and offloads data transmitted to and received from the user equipment to a second interface on the network node. The second interface is configured to send data to and receive data from the user equipment via the local area network.

  • Patent number: 9066363
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for mitigating interference between spectrally distinct wireless communication networks employing co-located, collaborating radios. A first base station is in a first network and communicates with a first radio within a first frequency range, and a second base station is in a second network and communicates with a second radio in a second frequency range. The first and second radios are geographically co-located, for example, within a public safety vehicle. The first radio determines a maximum level of interference it will accept based on current operational parameters, and communicates a corresponding threshold value to the second radio through a data link. The second radio sends a request to its base station to employ interim scheduling constraints governing uplink transmissions from the second radio, to thereby limit out of band emissions received by the first radio to a range that is less than the threshold interference level.

  • Publication number: 20150146529
Abstract: A method and a system for operating a radio network controller (RNC) in a wireless communication system. The RNC generates a group database comprising a plurality of transmitting groups and a resultant Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) associated with the transmissions received from each member within each transmitting group meets a pre-defined SINR threshold. The RNC tests the received SQMs associated with a new transmitting subscriber unit with the resultant SINR associated with each transmitting group to assign the new subscriber unit to at least one transmitting group on determining that the new transmitting subscriber unit could be added to the at least one transmitting group without reducing a resultant SINR associated with the at least one transmitting group below the pre-defined SINR threshold.

  • Publication number: 20130183904
Abstract: A communication pathway (145) can be established between physically collocated narrowband (135) and broadband (105) devices. The narrowband device (135) can identify a communication channel. A transmission frequency used by the broadband device (105) can be spectrally-proximate to a reception frequency used by the narrowband device (135) in a frequency range associated with the communication channel, resulting in interference of the narrowband device's (135) reception when the broadband device (105) is transmitting and the narrowband device (135) is receiving concurrently. The narrowband device (135) can instruct the broadband device (105) to switch to a transmission spectrum block that is spectrally separated from the reception spectrum block of the communication channel to minimize interference between the devices when the narrowband device (135) handles a call assignment.

  • Patent number: 8477892
Abstract: A method of reducing error in transmissions received in a receiver is provided. A transmission containing a synchronization signal is inputted through a first filter to a synchronization correlator, to generate a timing error of the synchronization signal. An amount of delay of the synchronization signal sufficient to reduce the timing error is determined. The transmission is delayed by the amount of delay by being passed through at least a second, variable filter whose delay is determined using a stochastic gradient algorithm. The synchronization correlator may also generate a deviation error of the synchronization signal and determine an amount of deviation correction sufficient to reduce the deviation error as well as generating a frequency error of the synchronization signal and determining an amount of frequency correction sufficient to reduce the frequency error.

  • Patent number: 8433001
Abstract: A signal is provided to each of nominal, higher and lower primary filters in a receiver. The nominal, higher and lower primary filters have different center frequencies and a bandwidth B1 and bandwidths B2, respectively and a bandwidth offset B0, with B2=B1+B0. Signal recovery is performed on the output of each primary filter to obtain recovered signals and error values each associated with one of the primary filters. Each error value is provided to a secondary and tertiary filter, to generate a signal criterion, and whose output is measured to generate a quality metric, respectively, associated with each recovered signal. The recovered signal associated with the nominal primary filter and any other recovered signal having an associated signal criterion below a threshold value is selected and the selected recovered signal which has the lowest associated quality metric is chosen.

  • Patent number: 8416720
Abstract: A method (200, 300) for supporting telecommunications over a wide area network. The method can include receiving a first message from a first communications site (110), the first message communicated through a logical port (174) at the communications site and maintaining the logical port open for at least a minimum period. A second message can be received from a second communications site (112), the second message requesting an identifier associated with the first communications site. Further, a third message can be communicated to the first communications site through the logical port. The third message can identify the second communications site as a candidate for establishing a peer-to-peer communications link over which telecommunications content may be communicated to a first remote unit (104).

  • Patent number: 8416727
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for communicating a group message packet among wireless communication devices (WCDs) over a wide area communication network that includes a first infrastructure device (ID), a second ID and a third ID. A first communication connection is established between an envoy packet duplicator module (EPDM) that is in communication range of a source wireless communication device (WCD) and a first envoy module implemented at the first ID that is in communication range of a first destination WCD. The EPDM is implemented at the third ID. The source WCD communicates a group message packet from the source WCD to a third envoy module implemented at the third ID, which forwards the group message packet to the EPDM. The EPDM generates a first copy of the group message packet destined for the first destination WCD, and communicates the first copy of the group message packet to the first envoy module.
