A probe assembly optically detects a polished thickness at a polished point on the wafer.

A transition point of an external clock signal is detected and an internal clock signal is generated based on the detection result. It is therefore possible to maintain the pulse width of the internal clock signal to a set value regardless of variation in the pulse width of the external clock signal.
