The memory stores instructions that when executed cause the processor to access a media file stored in the portable media device based on a trial access term for the media file, determine that a trial period within the trial access term for the media file has expired, and set the media file as inaccessible to the portable device in response to determining that the trial period within the trial access term has expired.

Abstract: Methods and systems to obtain content and generate modified content based on a time limited content consumption information is disclosed. In one embodiment, content may be obtained from a content source and modified based on the time limited content consumption information. In one embodiment, such modified content is stored in a memory of a content modification system and subsequently delivered to a target consumer.

Briefly described, in architecture, one embodiment of the system, among others, can be implemented as follows. The system includes a file sharing application configured to initiate a communication session with a file server, where the file server manages download requests for media files listed on a dynamic list. Use of the media files is subject to a trial period that corresponds to a period that the media files remain on the dynamic list. The system further includes trial period checking logic configured to retrieve a new dynamic list and check whether a trial period for a media file has expired by determining whether the media file is listed on the new dynamic list and offer presentation logic configured to offer a user a license for continued use of a media file that has an expired trial period. Other systems and methods are also provided.

Abstract: A computer network system establishes an instant messaging (IM) session between a first user registered with a first ISP (ISP) and at least one user registered with a second ISP when the two ISPs operate using different IM protocols. The ISPs each contain a Local IM server connected to each registered user. Each ISP also contains a Universal IM server that is connected to the distributed network. The Universal IM server includes a database that stores routing information and Presence information for each user registered with the second ISPs and facilitates communications between the first and second user using a universal format, such as XML.

Abstract: One embodiment of the disclosed technology involves determining a preferred communication connection between two parties that are communication-network end-users, at least one of which parties has access to at least two networks. A database contains information on the current connectivity of the two parties and a preferred communication connection is determined based on information from the database. The preferred connection may be used to exchange multimedia content that can be transmitted in real time, or, based on the connectivity information, can be sent to a multimedia relay from which it will be obtained by the recipient when the recipient has appropriate connectivity.

The method also includes receiving a signal at the set-top box device from an external power interface. The signal indicates that a low power state has been detected at a power outlet of the external power interface, the power outlet associated with the display device. Further, the method includes sending a signal to a source of the content stream in response to receiving the signal indicating the low power state. The signal indicates that the source is to cease sending the content stream to the set-top box device.

In a particular embodiment, a method is disclosed that includes receiving a media stream and associating moderator controls with the media stream to create an interactive media session. The interactive media session enables multiple remote users to interact with one another with respect to the media stream. The moderator controls enable a moderator to facilitate the interaction of the multiple remote users. The method also includes sending display data to display devices of the multiple remote users. The display data is based on moderator control input received via the moderator controls, interactive input received from the multiple remote users, and the received media stream.

Abstract: Systems and methods of avatar configuration based on a media stream context are disclosed. In a particular embodiment, a method is disclosed that includes determining context information related to a portion of a media stream. The method also includes selecting configuration settings of an avatar based at least partially on the context information. The avatar is responsive to user input to enable interaction with one or more other users with respect to the media stream. The method further includes sending display data to a user device. The display data includes information to display the avatar with the portion of the media stream.

Abstract: A method of providing feedback related to advertisement data includes receiving a request from a set-top box device at an advertisement data management system. The request indicates that data related to a particular advertisement is to be sent to a mobile device associated with the set-top box device. Further, the method includes receiving data from a point of sale venue indicating that a transaction based on the data related to the particular advertisement has been completed.
