  • Patent number: 8300620
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for adjusting a timer mechanism based on radio frequency (RF) conditions of a network connecting source and destination devices are provided. Initially, data packets transmitted by the source device are assigned an ordering. This ordering is compared to an actual order in which the data packets are received at the destination device to ascertain whether any data packets were missing due to RF conditions. A negative response indicating missing, or lost, data packets may be returned, thereby invoking the source device to retransmit the data packets identified as missing. The device(s) may compute a probability of packet-loss (utilizing a recorded history of the transmitted packets in conjunction with the data packets actually received) and utilize the packet-loss probability to dynamically tune a time-interval of the timer mechanism. Upon expiration of the time-interval, the timer mechanism instructs the source device to retransmit the initial data packets.

  • Patent number: 8300597
Abstract: An access terminal may be operating in a first mode in which it sends DSC transmissions that each indicate a cell in which the access terminal will be requesting data after sending the transmission. The access terminal may then detect that it is located at a boundary between two cells. In response, the access terminal may switch from operating in the first mode to operating in a second mode by reducing a number of timeslots that each DSC transmission occupies and beginning to alternate between sending a DSC transmission indicating the first cell and a DSC transmission indicating the second cell. In turn, the BTSs serving the two cells may receive these DSC transmissions and responsively switch from operating in a first mode to operating in a second mode in which both BTSs continue receiving the access terminal's data (e.g., by suspending the sending of “ForwardStopped” messages to an RNC).

  • Patent number: 8270988
Abstract: A method is disclosed for implementing an overlay carrier frequency in a wireless coverage area in response to low load in the coverage area. Normally, an carrier frequency may be added in response to high load. However, the disclosed method involves adding a carrier frequency in response to low load, as the addition of a carrier may advantageously increase the likelihood of soft handoff in certain situations, and as low load may facilitate operation on the added carrier without the need to add expensive supporting infrastructure that would typically be added to support full operation on an added carrier frequency.

  • Patent number: 8254874
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for variable persistence delay in access terminals receiving a concatenate page message. When an access terminal (e.g., a mobile station or wireless communication device) receives a page message that it determines is part of a concatenated page message, the access terminal will compute a backoff delay and a persistence delay according to delay parameters selected based upon the determination. According to an example embodiment, the access terminal will use the place-order of the received page record in the concatenation of page records in the page message to select values of the delay parameters. Other access terminals receiving the same concatenated page message will similarly select delay parameters. By associating the delay parameter values with place-order in the concatenated page message, each access terminal may used different values, and thereby compute different delays.

  • Patent number: 8249611
Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamically adjusting the size of an access search window are provided. In an embodiment a base station uses an access search window size, which is initially set to a default value, to determine whether to accept access requests from access terminals (ATs). The base station operates to accept access requests from ATs when the ATs are within the distance defined by the value of the access search window. The base station further operates to measure an amount of traffic for a sector of a wireless coverage area and change the value of the access search window size based on the amount of traffic on the sector.

  • Patent number: 8244255
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for basing a handoff of a mobile device on its position within a coverage area of a source base transceiver station (BTS) are provided. Initially, embodiments involve recording threshold distances, associated with candidate BTSs neighboring the source BTS, and capturing pilot strength measurement messages (PSMM's) at each of the threshold distances. Upon establishing a connection to the source BTS, the position of the mobile device is monitored to detect a traversal of the threshold distances. Consequently, the mobile device reports a current PSMM for comparison against the captured PSMM's. If any messages correspond, a candidate BTS is selected for receiving the connection of the mobile device. Otherwise, the connection to the source BTS is maintained. Accordingly, the distance of the mobile device from the source BTS at which the handoff is invoked may vary based on a radial direction of the mobile device therefrom.

  • Patent number: 8238931
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for dynamic adjustment of auxiliary pilot triggering based on latency. In an example embodiment, an AT that engages in a data communication that requires low latency will transmit its auxiliary pilot unconditionally and without regard to the payload sizes of the packets it transmits. Thus, the AT will not use a comparison of payload packet size with a threshold packet size when determining whether to transmit its auxiliary pilot. Rather, the AT will begin transmitting its auxiliary pilot upon a determination that it is engaged or will engage or has begun to engage in a communication that requires low latency. At the same time, an AT that engages in data communication that does not require low latency will advantageously trigger its auxiliary pilot less aggressively in response to an instruction from the base station to do so.

  • Patent number: 8229493
Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamically adjusting a metric that influences power management of an access terminal are provided. Initially, an access node is configured to distribute reverse-activity bits (RAB's) to the access terminal, which conveys data, at a particular rate, to the access node. Adjusting the dynamic metric involves establishing a number of slots allocated for a filtered reverse-activity bit (FRAB) window and a hybrid reverse-activity bit (HRAB) window, wherein each of the slots are allocated to accept a RAB. The RAB's accepted to the slots of the FRAB window and the HRAB window are recursively averaged to derive a FRAB parameter and an HRAB parameter, respectively. The dynamic metric is adjusted by incorporating either the FRAB parameter or an HRAB parameter therein based on whether ramping conditions are satisfied. The rate of data conveyed from the access terminal is controlled based on the adjusted dynamic metric.

  • Patent number: 8213361
Abstract: Air interface protocols under the numerous wireless communication standards allow use of a quick-paging channel (QPCH) to expedite paging and call setup. When a hybrid mobile device is engaged in wireless communications under a first air interface protocol, it may periodically switch over to a second air interface protocol to check for pages on the slower standard paging channel (PCH). To increase throughput under the first air interface protocol, it would be useful to employ the QPCH under the second air interface protocol, to reduce time spent by hybrid device checking for pages under the second air interface protocol. However, the QPCH uses resources under the second air interface protocol, so it would be best to not have the QPCH activated at all times. According to the invention, the system would activate the QPCH under the second air interface protocol in response to there being more than an upper threshold number of hybrid devices active under the first air interface protocol.

  • Patent number: 8203947
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for interlaced control channel. When a RAN in a wireless communication system operating at least according to IS-856 determines that a delay condition exists in the transmission of control packets to access terminals, it invokes interlacing of time slots bearing control-channel data. By so doing, control packets are transmitted in interlaced fashion, thereby reducing delay in transmission compared with sequential transmission of control packets. A delay condition could correspond to a measured delay exceeding a threshold delay, a predicted delay (e.g., based on queue occupancy) exceeding a threshold number, or the number of access terminals eligible to receive control messages during a particular time interval exceeding a different threshold number.

  • Patent number: 8204517
Abstract: An access network may identify paging areas based on a reference location (e.g., a mobile station's last known location), where each paging area includes at least one coverage area. The access network may then determine paging-channel occupancies for coverage areas in at least identified paging area. In turn, the access network may adjust a given identified paging area based on the determined paging-channel occupancies, resulting in an adjusted paging area. For example, the access network may add coverage areas to the given identified paging area and/or remove coverage areas from the given identified paging area based on the paging-channel occupancies for those coverage areas. Thereafter, the access network may page a mobile station associated with the reference location in the adjusted paging area.

  • Patent number: 8160034
Abstract: Methods and systems provide dynamic determination of a control-channel bit rate. An access node provides service on a carrier comprising active and idle timeslots, active timeslots comprising a data channel for carrying a control channel at a bit rate that can be set to a lower value or a higher value, and traffic channels. The access node determines whether the number of active timeslots over a time period is less than a first threshold. If so, the access node sets the bit rate to the lower value. If not, the access node sets the bit rate to the higher value if at least one of the following is true: (a) control-channel occupancy exceeds a second threshold, (b) the amount of data in a traffic buffer exceeds a third threshold, and (c) control-channel occupancy exceeds a fourth threshold and the amount of data in the traffic buffer exceeds a fifth threshold.

  • Patent number: 8160634
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for intelligent power control in a wireless communication system. In accordance with an example embodiment, a first device will operate in a dynamic-power state in which it transmits a power-increment command or power-decrement command in response to each of periodic comparisons of a signal power level of a signal received from a second device with a threshold power level. While operating in the dynamic-power state, the first device will recognize when it has transmitted a threshold number of alternating power-increment and power-decrement commands, and responsively will transition to operating in a steady-power state in which it continues to transmit alternating power-increment and power-decrement commands even if it detects that the second device has ceased responding to the alternating power-increment and power-decrement commands.

  • Patent number: 8140107
Abstract: In methods and systems for adjusting forward link transmit power of wireless coverage areas, forward link signal strength is observed to obtain a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and/or an observed frame error rate (FER) for the received signal. A determination is made whether to request a forward link power adjustment. If the determination is that a forward link power adjustment is required, a request may be made into a radio access network (RAN) to adjust power. The RAN may select a subset of wireless coverage areas in which to adjust power. If further power adjustment is required, a further request may be made into the RAN, and the RAN may select a different subset of wireless coverage areas in which to adjust power.
