Patent number: 7054642Abstract: Systems and methods for providing telephone service to transient or inaccessible customers include a stationary cellular telephone that operates like a land-line telephone in that its use is restricted to a single geographic area, such a house address. The stationary cellular telephone can only handoff between cell sites that are associated with the geographic area. The stationary cellular telephone can place calls using only cell sites in a list of permissible cell sites that is maintained at the network level. The stationary cellular telephone is activated by sending customer, device, and/or location identifiers to an activation center via a telephone call. The activation center validates service, and downloads the list of permissible cell sites to the stationary cellular telephone. Dynamic rates provide opportunities for further reduction in the cost of service, with real-time notification of capacity based pricing, and service levels that vary according to network capacity.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2002Date of Patent: May 30, 2006Assignee: BellSouth Intellectual Property CorporationInventors: William R. Matz, Douglas R. O'Neil, James R. Bacon, Vernon Meadows

Patent number: 7020460Abstract: A method for providing a mobile network notification service including receiving a first telephone number associated with a first notification service customer. The method further includes receiving an indication that a first telephone corresponding to the first telephone number has been powered on and is available in a mobile network. A mobile network status of a second telephone corresponding to a second telephone number is determined in response to locating the second telephone number in a notification list associated with the first notification service customer. The status is transmitted to the first notification service customer.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2003Date of Patent: March 28, 2006Assignee: BellSouth Intellectual Property CorporationInventors: Stephen K. Sherman, Douglas R. O'Neil

Patent number: 7006831Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling traffic on a communications network include dynamic and flexible control plans that enable service providers to control or influence customer access to communications facilities. Communications facilities are monitored to identify network elements, such as cell sites, that are overloaded. When the traffic intensity on a particular facility exceeds a predetermined level, either active or passive control is imposed on subscribers that are in the geographic area of the facility. Active control involves blocking, delaying or disrupting subscriber calls during the critical time period. Passive control involves providing cost incentives or disincentives during low or peak periods of traffic intensity. Customers are notified of the commencement and/or termination of active or passive control preferably via SMS.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2002Date of Patent: February 28, 2006Assignee: BellSouth Intellectual Property CorporationInventors: William R. Matz, Douglas R. O'Neil, James R. Bacon, Vernon Meadows

Publication number: 20040225887Abstract: Centralized authentication systems are provided. A representative system, among others, includes a mobile authentication registration system, a content provider and a wireless internet server. The mobile authentication registration system resides on a content provider which is coupled to the internet, and is operable to receive a single identification number and password from a user independent of a platform the user is associated with, and determine that the identification number and password combination provided by the user is associated with a registered user. The content provider provides personalized internet content to any of a plurality of registered users on a plurality of platforms. The wireless internet server receives a connection request from a wireless device, sends an authentication request to the mobile authentication registration system, and provides a personalized internet content from the content provider to said at least one wireless device.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 8, 2003Publication date: November 11, 2004Inventors: Douglas R. Patent number: 6226364Abstract: A real-time telephone call monitoring, rating, and response system including real-time interfaces and switching centers that create and maintain in-process call detail records for on-going telephone calls. The real-time interfaces are accessed by a real-time monitoring unit in a billing system. The billing system maintains accounts and associated service profiles for subscribers. The billing system may also obtain temporary service profiles for roamers. For both subscribers and roamers, the billing system monitors the in-process call detail records in real time and instructs the switching centers to take certain actions, such as obtaining an alternate payment source, or disconnecting a communication, in response to financial considerations determined by the billing system. A prepaid telephone service card system, including a prepaid telephone service database located in the billing system, operates in connection with the real-time telephone call monitoring, rating, and response system.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1997Date of Patent: May 1, 2001Assignee: Bellsouth Intellectual Property Management CorporationInventor: Douglas R. Patent number: 5496966Abstract: A system for the establishment and control of an electromagnetic signal propagation environment containing a particular set of desirable radio frequency characteristics within a bounded area. The bounded area is typically either a business office environment or a residential environment. The electromagnetic signal propagation control system provides interference rejection by preventing electromagnetic interference signals from entering an enclosure to interfere with an enclosed communications system or by preventing signals generated by the enclosed communications system from exiting the enclosure and interfering with another nearby communications system. The system also customizes the electromagnetic signal environment to improve communications within interior areas otherwise blocked from signal propagation and to absorb signal reflections from interior surfaces that may cause interference for the enclosed communications system.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1991Date of Patent: March 5, 1996Assignee: BellSouth CorporationInventors: Neale C. Hightower, Douglas R. O'Neil
