Abstract: An iris retractor for use in operating on the eye of a living creature is proposed, by means of which the iris is drawn outwards for widening the pupil and is held at the outer edge, which is essentially formed by the transition from the cornea to the sclera.The iris retractor essentially comprises a suspended part having a hook portion and a guide part and on which a platelet-like clamping part is displaceable relative to the hook portion.

Abstract: An improved vitrectomy probe for removing vitreous and other fibrous gel materials. A hollow cutting blade is reciprocated within a smooth bore hollow needle of the microsurgical vitrectomy probe across a cutting edge of the outer needle slicing the fibrous material of the vitreous. A pressurized fluid source, diaphragm and spring cooperate to provide for the reciprocation of the blade. A vacuum source removes vitreous material through the hollow needle. A reciprocating suction outlet tube attached to the hollow needle directs vitreous material into a vacuum fitting which is isolated from the motion of the reciprocating outlet tube. An adjustment screw limits the travel of the reciprocating blade as well as the size of the opening in the needle. A dissector head faciitates the separation of vitreous fibers and directs them into the needle opening.

Abstract: This invention concerns the use of stainless steel, disposable tacks to be employed in the mechanical dilation of the iris during opthalmic surgery. Intended for temporary iris fixation, the tack is provided with a hook built onto its proximal end, and with a sharp anterior blade at its distal end. The anterior blade allows easy insertion of the tack through the peripheral cornea of the eye, at the limbal area, and an applicator is provided with a forked holder to firmly grasp the hook in securely placing and removing the tack in the surgical procedure.
