  • Patent number: 7646767
Abstract: A method and system for routing fiber channel frames using a fiber channel switch element is provided. The switch element includes, a hashing module whose output is used to select the column from a look up table to route frames. The method includes, indexing a look up table using domain, area, virtual storage area network identifier, a hashing module output and/or AL_PA values; selecting a column from the look up table based on a column select signal; and routing a frame if a route is valid. The hashing module takes a fiber channel header to generate a pseudo random value used for selecting a column from the look up table. The hashing module uses same field values in an exchange to generate the pseudo random value. A hash function is used on a frame's OX_ID, D_ID, S_ID, and/or RX_ID to route fiber channel frames.

  • Patent number: 7542676
Abstract: A method and a Fibre Channel switch element are provided that allows communication between a host system and a target device attached to a proprietary switch fabric in a network. The Fibre Channel switch element includes a first port that communicates with the target device through the proprietary switch fabric by logging on behalf of the host system so that the proprietary switch behaves as if it was directly communicating with the host system; and a second port that communicates with the host system and collects host bus adapter (“HBA”) identification information, wherein the HBA identification information is used to map the first port to the second port so that when the host system communicates with the target device the Fibre Channel switch element is transparent to the proprietary switch fabric.

  • Publication number: 20070291758
Abstract: A Fibre Channel Switch element and method for Inter-Fabric routing is provided. The switch element includes a switch port whose worldwide port number is used in a zone set to enable Inter-Fabric frame routing without using Inter-Fabric frame headers. The method includes querying a Name Server to determine world wide port numbers of devices; storing query results in an Inter-Fabric Name Server module; extracting world wide port numbers for each switch port; registering Proxy Devices with the Name Server, wherein the Proxy Devices interface with the switch ports as if it was they were actual devices to route Inter-Fabric frames; and establishing Fabric Address Translator entries so that source identification values and destination identification values are mapped to route Inter-Fabric frames without using Inter-Fabric frame headers.

  • Patent number: 7103504
Abstract: A method and system for monitoring events in a storage area network is provided. The system includes a threshold monitoring module that receives a message from plural monitoring agents indicating if a parameter varies from a threshold value, and in response to the message, the threshold monitoring module coordinates an event. The threshold values are stored and updated in a threshold table. The monitoring agents include a Chassis monitoring module, a fabric monitoring module, a port monitoring module, and/or an Nx_port event monitoring module. An event response module is notified of the variation and an event is generated in response to the notification based on an event table. The method includes, monitoring plural events by using plural monitoring agents in a fabric switch; comparing a parameter value to a threshold value for the parameter; and notifying a threshold monitoring module if the parameter value varies from the threshold value.
