Abstract: Described are spiropyran materials useful in augmenting enhancing or modifying the aroma of perfume compositions and colognes which spiropyran materials have the structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl; wherein R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and.sub.7 represents hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 lower alkyl; wherein when one of R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 or R.sub.7 is any of C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 lower alkyl, each of the other of the R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 moieties is hydrogen; wherein each of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon single bond or a carbon-carbon double bond, with at least one of the dashed lines being a carbon-carbon single bond.Green, floral, herbal, eucalyptol-like, sweet, minty and terpineol-like notes are produced in such perfume compositions and colognes.

Abstract: Processes and compositions are described for the use in cationic, anionic and nonionic detergents and soaps of 1-(3,3-dimethyl-2-norbornyl)-2-propanone (hereinafter referred to as the "norbornylpropanone derivatives") having the structure: ##STR1## (which structure is intended to cover both the "endo" and the "exo" isomers thereof). Addition of the said "norbornylpropanone derivative" to soaps and cationic, anionic and nonionic detergents is indicated to produce sweet, berry, woody, piney, mint aroma notes with a damascenone-like character and buttery and minty nuances.

Abstract: Described is a process for preparing cyclohexadiene derivatives having the generic formula: ##STR1## by means of reacting a compound having the structure: ##STR2## with mineral acid selected from the group consisting of dilute hydrochloric acid, dilute phosphoric acid and dilute sulfuric acid; wherein R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl. The products produced by this process are useful for their organoleptic properties in perfumes, foodstuffs and tobaccos.

Abstract: Processes and compositions are described for the use in perfume aroma augmenting, enhancing, modifying and imparting compositions and as perfume and perfumed article aroma imparting and enhancing materials of oxyhydrocarbylnorbornanes having the structure: ##STR1## wherein X is carbonyl or carbinyl having the structures, respectively: ##STR2## and wherein at least one of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon single bond and the other of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon single bond or a carbon-carbon double bond. Addition of the said oxyhydrocarbylnorbornanes to consumable materials is indicated to produce in perfumes, colognes and perfumed articles, natural, sweet pine, incense, camphene-like, sweet, green, floral, fruity, dried fruity, ionone-like, orris-like and nasturtium-like aromas with dried, woody, piney, sweaty, geranic acid-like nuances.

Abstract: Described is a process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of a smoking tobacco comprising the step of intimately admixing an organoleptic property modifying quantity of a substituted dimethyl dihydroxy benzene or cyclohexadiene represented by the equilibrium mixture of a constituent thereof: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of acetyl having the structure: ##STR2## and nitrile having the structure:--C.tbd.N]and wherein the dashed line represents a carbon-carbon single bond or a carbon-carbon double bond with the proviso that when the dashed line represents a carbon-carbon single bond R.sub.1 is only nitrile with a material selected from the group consisting of tobacco and at least one other tobacco flavoring adjuvant; and smoking articles containing said smoking tobacco.

Abstract: Described are hexahydrotetramethyl acetonaphthones and mixtures of such substituted acetonaphthones having the generic formula: ##STR1## wherein one of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon double bond and each of the other of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon single bond, and, specifically, the novel isomer having the structure: ##STR2## and processes for the preparation of such mixtures and said novel isomer, as well as a known single component of said mixtures and compounds useful as vetiver ingredients in perfumes and perfumed articles.

Abstract: Processes and compositions are described for use in foodstuff, chewing gum, toothpaste and medicinal product flavor and aroma; tobacco flavor and aroma; perfume and perfumed article aroma augmenting, enhancing and imparting compositions; and as foodstuff, chewing gum, toothpaste, medicinal product, tobacco, perfume and perfumed article aroma imparting materials of one or more cyclohexadiene derivatives having the generic formula: ##STR1## wherein R is one of C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, R.sub.1 is methyl when R.sub.2 is hydrogen, and R.sub.1 is hydrogen when R.sub.2 is methyl, produced by one of the following processes:(i) Reacting a 1-alkyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexa-1,3-diene with oxygen in the presence of light, an ultraviolet sensitizer, and a basic catalyst; and fractionally distilling the resulting product; or(ii) Reacting a 4-alkyl-4-hydroxy-3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-one with dilute aqueous mineral acid and distilling the resulting reaction product.
